Eco-friendly Umbrella
Traditional umbrellas come with a fixed surface. Although it is changeable, you cannot replace it easily. This eco-friendly design is more flexible. It is actually only an umbrella skeleton without any surface, which can be folded, so you can put anything such as newspapers, plastic bags or whatever you want to serve as the protecting surface.
Pollution-sensitive Dress
Don’t be caught outside unaware of pollution levels in the air. The pollution-sensitive EPA Dress by Stephanie Sandstrom notices pollution in the air accordingly. This dress—which is actually quite pretty—looks like you pull it from the bottom of the dirty laundry pile when the air is dirty. It might protect your health by advising you to stay indoors for the day, but it won’t do you any favor if you’re meeting with clients.
Eco-friendly Car Racer
Can you image a car racer is so eco-friendly that its tyres are made from potatoes, its body is created from hemp (大麻) and rapeseed oil and it runs on fuel made from wheat and sugar beet The one seater racing car called Eco One is built by experts from Warwick University, who hope that Eco One will be used by the automotive industry. It is sold at $ 51,000.
Eco-friendly Moss (苔藓) Carpet
Do you know it is said that walking on fresh grass can really increases your blood circulation The Moss Carpet, created by Nguyen La Chanh, looks at getting the grass to your feet. The mat includes ball moss, island moss and forest moss. The humidity (湿度) of the bathroom ensures that it grows well. And that’s why you need to place it there and not anywhere else.

The Boy Made It!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode (一期节目) of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
When Gxrylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
4.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon
A.He got lost. B.He broke his skis.
C.He hurt his eyes. D.He caught a cold.
5.How did Nicholas keep himself warm
A.He found a shelter. B.He lighted some branches.
C.He kept on skiing. D.He built a snow cave.
6.On Tuesday’ Nicholas .
A.returned to his shelter safely B.was saved by a searcher
C.got stuck in the snow D.stayed where he was
7.Nicholas left Grylls a very deep impression because he .
A.did the right things in the dangerous situation B.watched Grylls’ TV program regularly
C.created some tips for survival D.was very hard-working

On Europe’s largest artificial lake near Alqueva, Portugal, a remarkable solar energy project is proving that clean technology and nature can work hand in hand. Developed by energy company EDP, this floating solar plant — once questioned for its high costs — now demonstrates how renewable energy can adapt to modern challenges while protecting the environment.
The project’s first phase uses 12,000 solar panels fixed on floating platforms made partly from recycled plastic and local wood. These platforms connect to a smart energy system linked to a nearby hydroelectric (水力发电的) dam. This connection allows the solar plant to skip the lengthy process of joining traditional solar farms to power grids, speeding up clean energy delivery to communities.
Building solar farms on water, however, comes with unique difficulties. Engineers must design structures strong enough to survive storms, waves, and constant water exposure, which increases costs. Nature itself adds another challenge: fish in the lake attract birds, whose droppings cover the panels and block sunlight. To solve this, the team uses remote-controlled cleaning robots and is testing models that operate independently.
Despite these challenges, floating solar offers clear benefits. By using space on dam reservoirs, it avoids taking up valuable land needed for farming or housing. Water naturally cools the panels, making them 5%–15% more efficient than land-based systems — a key advantage for energy production. Additionally, the shade from the panels reduces water evaporation by up to 70%, helping conserve resources in dry regions.
EDP has big plans for the technology. While the current project produces 5 megawatts (MW) of power — enough for about 1,500 homes — a second phase will expand this to 70 MW by 2025. Experts predict floating solar could reach 60,000 MW globally by 2031. Though minor compared to the world’s total solar capacity (1.6 million MW), its role is vital. As one report notes, “Every solution matters in the fight against climate change.”
By combining solar power with hydropower, this project offers a practical blueprint for a sustainable future — one where technology and nature coexist to light up our world.
8.What is the key feature of the Alqueva project’s design
A.Complete use of recycled materials for platforms. B.Full automation of energy storage processes.
C.Connection to a nearby hydroelectric system. D.Largest solar panels ever used in Europe.
9.What problem is caused by birds near the floating solar panels
A.Reduced sunlight reaching the panels. B.Damage to the platforms during storms.
C.Harm to the lake’s fish populations. D.Interference with robot operations.
10.The underlined phrase “minor compared to” suggests that floating solar’s capacity is ______.
A.underestimated by energy experts B.visually smaller than land systems
C.growing faster than expected D.much less than current solar totals
11.What is the author’s attitude toward floating solar technology
A.Supportive of its role in climate efforts. B.Overly optimistic about its global impact.
C.Critical due to high maintenance costs. D.Neutral about its environmental benefits.
D
The human brain tends to play favorites. Its prejudices, well demonstrated by psychological studies, include the “halo effect”: if we like a certain quality in a person, we’re more likely to perceive their unrelated traits positively as well. There’s also “affinity bias,” which refers to how we tend to favor people with backgrounds or characteristics similar to our own.
Now a study shows how cognitive biases (认知偏见) could profoundly affect our most basic learning and memory processes. “What we show is not that people are biased; that we already kind of know,” says Inês Bram o, a psychologist at Sweden’s Lund University and co-author of the new study, published in Communications Psychology. “We give an explanation of why people are biased. The fundamental mechanism may be that we are more likely to expand our knowledge based on information provided by people we like.” Such bias could help explain how people develop strongly polarized views.
Study participants first chose “teammates” and “opponents” from among images of random faces based on their like or dislike of the faces. Then they created imaginary personas for each chosen face, giving characteristics and identities they liked to teammates and ones they disliked to opponents.
Next, participants viewed images of faces in various backgrounds alongside household objects, simulating someone “showing” the item. Later, they matched objects that shared backgrounds (without faces) to test “memory integration” — linking past memories to form new inferences. They performed better when linking objects initially “presented” by liked personas, revealing a bias in associating prior knowledge with “partially related” new events.
Researchers suggest this explains opinion polarization: relying heavily on information from likeminded individuals (due to similarities) allows unchallenged beliefs to narrow perspectives.
Psychologist Charles Stone of the City University of New York says that this study is just the beginning and that further research could move beyond images to test learning with real-world events. “This could have important implications for how people make inferences and connect dots about their beliefs that then match their worldviews,” he says.
12.What is the “halo effect” as described in the passage
A.A bias where we associate a person’s traits based on their appearance.
B.A tendency to dislike people with backgrounds similar to our own.
C.A situation where we perceive others’ traits positively if we like them.
D.A psychological phenomenon where we remember faces better if we like them.
13.What does the study by Inês Bram o and colleagues aim to explain
A.The existence of cognitive biases in people.
B.The fundamental mechanism behind cognitive biases.
C.How people’s opinions become polarized.
D.The relationship between cognitive biases and memory.
14.In the study, what did participants do when they were asked to create imaginary personas
A.They related characteristics to randomly chosen faces.
B.They matched faces with common household objects.
C.They linked objects with backgrounds without faces.
D.They assigned traits to faces based on their impressions.
15.What does Charles Stone suggest for future research in this area
A.It should focus on cognitive biases in real-world application.
B.It should only consider the effects of the halo effect.
C.It should disregard the findings of the current study.
D.It should explore the impact of memory integration on learning.

第二节 (满分25分)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor, and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back in its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away, no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished, but, as he had already lied, he decided to deny everything, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A Spring Planting Activity
Last weekend, the Student Union of our school invited all students to participate in a planting activity at our school’s practice base.
Under the warm spring sun, we gathered, armed with tools and seeds, ready to work the land. Teachers guided us through preparing the soil, sowing seeds, and watering them. Everyone worked enthusiastically, learning the value of labor at first hand.
The experience benefited us a lot. Not only did we gain practical agricultural skills, but we also developed a deeper appreciation for nature and the effort behind food production.

The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Ben’s face turned red as he stared at the chocolate in his hand. His mother gently touched his head and continued, “You glued the vase carefully, which shows you truly cared about making things right.” She paused, her eyes warm and understanding. “But imagination should help us solve problems, not hide from them.” Ben bit his lip, realizing his mother had known the truth all along.
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. He took a deep breath and whispered, “Mom, I’m sorry. I broke the vase while playing basketball and lied to you.” His mother smiled softly, “I’m proud of you for telling the truth. Mistakes happen, but honesty is more precious than any antique.” She handed him another chocolate, “Let’s fix it together tomorrow, okay ” Ben nodded, holding the chocolate tightly, grateful for his mother’s wisdom and love.

His mother gently touched his head and continued, “You glued the vase carefully, which shows you truly cared about making things right.” She paused, her eyes warm and understanding. “But imagination should help us solve problems, not hide from them.” Ben bit his lip, realizing his mother had known the truth all along.

I broke the vase while playing basketball and lied to you.” His mother smiled softly, “I’m proud of you for telling the truth.
