Experience of hiking is rewarding. Here is a list of the world’s top treks (徒步跋涉).
Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia
Distance: 24 km
Duration: 2 days
Southeast Asian volcano trek is a must on the list, which is Indonesia’s Gunung Rinjani. The island climbs to a breathless height of 3,726 meters, where lies this huge lake-capped volcano. To gain the best views, the final push to the top starts before daybreak, in order to reach the crater rim (火山口边缘) as the first light pushes back the darkness.
Kalalau Trail Hawaii
Distance: 18 km
Duration: 2 days
Kalalau Trail follows a towering cliff (山崖) wall and reaches an overnight stop at a splendidly remote Hawaiian beach. The route along the Nā Pali Coast starts out easy, but gets progressively more challenging on steep dirt paths; the reward comes in the form of great views of valleys, thundering waterfalls and quiet beaches.
Inca Trail, Peru
Distance: 33 km
Duration: 4-5 days
The trek to Peru’s most famous ruin waits ahead for you. It climbs to 2,430 meters from the Sacred Valley, winding its way up, down and around mountains. Book at least six months in advance for one of the 500 permits available each day. That figure includes support staff, so in reality, only about 200 lucky tourist trekkers are issued one.
Routeburn Track, New Zealand
Distance: 32 km
Duration: 3-4 days
Routeburn Track is one of the best ways to cross the undeveloped natural wonderland. It’s for fans of big views and open skies, following narrow valleys through two amazing national parks: Fiordland and Mt Aspiring. The preferred route runs from the Routeburn Shelter to Milford Road, with overnight stops in wonderfully located campgrounds.

Kris Bowers, a musician and award-winning film composer, grew up playing the piano through Los Angeles Unified’s music program. But it was only a few years ago that he learned about the people who cared for the instruments that brought him — and so many other students — joy and emotional support over the years.
The documentary The Last Repair Shop, co-directed by Bowers, puts the spotlight on those technicians who regularly repair more than 130,000 student instruments for free — work that has been taking place in a downtown L.A. storehouse since 1959.
For Bowers, making the film was a full circle moment. He learned about the work of Steve Bagmanyan, a technician who tuned the pianos in Bowers’s primary and middle schools. “I was able to thank someone who had a hand in my progress as a musician,” Bowers says.
Besides Bagmanyan, who is one of four workers, each personal story intersects (交织) with a piece of L.A. and maybe even United States history. Dana Atkinson, who works in the strings division, shares his story. Paty Moreno, the only woman technician in the shop, talks about her journey moving to the U.S. from Mexico and raising her children here — her job in the repair shop helped her maintain some stability, she says. Duane Michaels fixes the woodwind instruments and talks about his time on tour with the great rock singer Elvis in the past.
Directing the documentary gave Bowers a chance to mix his love for music and his city. “Having that deep love for this city and discovering this music repair shop and this program make me extremely proud of the city,” Bowers says.
The film has already brought attention to the repair shop. There is now a $15 million fundraising effort set up by the Education Foundation to help keep the program running and invest in future instrument technicians.
4. What does The Last Repair Shop focus on
A. The development of a repair shop.
B. The stories of instrument technicians.
C Bowers’s journey to become a musician.
D. Bowers’s struggle to support piano players.
5. Why was Steve Bagmanyan included in the film
A. He instructed Bowers to be a composer.
B. He played a role in Bowers’s musical career.
C. He was a professional instrument repairman.
D. He had an influence on Bowers academically.
6. What does Bowers think of the experience of directing the documentary
A. Demanding. B. Challenging. C. Promising. D. Rewarding.
7. What is the purpose of the text
A. To honor a famous director. B. To advertise a repair shop.
C. To introduce a documentary. D. To share a music program.

After nearly six months of rescue and professional care at the Sanya Haichang Animal Conservation Center in Hainan Province, the aground short-finned (鳍) pilot whale named “Haitang” has recovered and returned to the sea on Sunday morning.
Short-finned pilot whales are national second-class protected wild animals. On Jan. 3, the short-finned pilot whale “Haitang” was found aground in Haitang Bay, Sanya city, with obvious injuries in many parts of its body.
Under the watchful eyes of volunteers and experts, Haitang can now eat 12 kilograms of squid (鱿鱼) a day, served in four meals throughout the day, according to Cao Zheng, head of the conservation center. Its body length has grown from 3.6 meters to 3.7 meters, and its upper body circumference (圆周) has grown from 1.9 meters to 2 meters.
“Squid is the main food of short-finned pilot whales. With the waters near Sanya teeming with a richness of squid, the intelligent whales have developed a skill for hunting so many slow-moving fish and enjoying a great meal,” said Cao. “Haitang has mastered the art of catching squid in the wild. Although it may need some time to readjust to the freedom of the open sea after being released, we’ll monitor its movements through a specialized device,” Cao added.
The release team has discussed and mapped out every aspect of the release process, from transportation process to the exact location of entry into the sea, as the whale now weighs around 500kg.
Haitang’s journey started as they went aboard the research ship on Saturday, a journey of more than 10 hours at sea. The team decided to release Haitang in a 500-meter-deep area, known for the activity of short-finned pilot whales. By choosing a location with a history of whale presence, the team aims to provide Haitang with the best possible chance of joining a population and establishing new connections within its natural habitat, said Cao.
8. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To show Haitang’s recovery. B. To prove experts’ hard work.
C. To highlight Haitang’s huge size. D. To record Haitang’s characteristics.
9. What does the underlined phrase “teeming with” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Rising over. B. Blocked by. C. Filled with. D. Running past.
10. What can be known about the releasing spot
A. It’s the deepest part of the sea.
B. It’s where Haitang was spotted.
C. Haitang can find companions easily there.
D. Haitang is a symbol of natural history there.
11. In which section of a website is the text likely to appear
A. Medicine. B. Environment. C. Travel. D. Business.

Recent research has found that Martian (火星的) soil contains all the elements necessary for growing rice, scientist Abhilash Ramachandran of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, reported at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, providing new possibilities for agriculture on the Red Planet.
The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, tested simulated (模拟的) Martian soil to determine its suitability for growing rice. The researchers found that the soil contained all the necessary elements needed for the crop to grow.
However, it would be a bit challenging for the plants to survive in the soil that has perchlorate, a chemical that has been discovered on Mars’s surface and can be poisonous to plants.
The team grew rice plants in a Martian soil simulant primarily made of Mojave Desert basalt (玄武岩). However, the new-grown plants developed slighter shoots and thinner roots than the plants that grew from the potting mix. Even replacing just 25 percent of the simulant with a potting mix made a big difference, the team found.
The team of researchers then conducted an experiment to grow rice in soil containing perchlorate. They used a wild rice variety and two genetically (基因地) edited varieties, which were designed to stand up to environmental stressors such as drought, and tested them in Mars-simulated soil with and without perchlorate.
The study found that a concentration of three grams of perchlorate per kilogram of soil resulted in no growth of rice plants. However, when the concentration was reduced to one gram per kilogram, one of the genetically edited lines successfully grew both a shoot and a root, while the wild variety was only able to grow a root.
“We want to send humans to Mars but we cannot take everything there. It’s going to be expensive,” said Ramachandran. The discovery could be a game-changer for future missions to Mars, as it could enable astronauts to grow their own food on the planet, reducing the need for costly and difficult resupply missions.
12. How did the researchers conduct their study
A. By conducting a survey. B. By making a case study.
C. By carrying out experiments. D. By referring to former studies.
13. The gene-edited rice variety grows better in one kilogram of soil containing ________.
A. one gram of perchlorate B. two grams of perchlorate
C. three grams of perchlorate D. four grams of perchlorate
14. What is the benefit of the discovery
A. Supporting the growing population on Earth.
B. Helping astronauts feed themselves on Mars.
C. Enabling people to eat new varieties of rice.
D. Finding an approach to making a good fortune.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. How did Martian Soil Change Over Time
B. What can Mars Provide for People on Earth
C. People Are Likely to Live on Mars in the Near Future
D. Martian Soil may Have All the Necessary Elements Rice Needs

【答案】Dear Frank,
I’m terribly sorry to tell you that I can’t go swimming with you this Sunday. Because my younger sister will attend a speech contest next Monday, I have to help her prepare for it this Sunday. I hope this change won’t disappoint you.
What about going swimming next weekend I am sure I will be available then. In addition, there is a newly-opened Chinese restaurant near the swimming pool. I know you’re interested in Chinese food. We can have dinner there after swimming.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

When Brenda learnt about this, she came up with an idea. She asked her mother to shoot the video of her and Ethan dancing. Kelly watched them with a mixed feeling. For a while, she felt guilty for her daughter. Brenda could have become a perfect dancer with financial support. She wished she could help Brenda pursue her dream. They were dancing fairly well. Then Brenda convinced her to upload the video on the Internet. Within an hour they had about fifty likes and views.
Brenda’s friends shared the video with their families. Within a day the video gained great popularity. The following day Kelly received a call from the school to arrange Ethan’s costume since he was now a participant in a dance. On the day of the event, Kelly and James were thrilled to see Ethan’s excellent performance. The entire hall roared with thunderous applause. The event was a game-changer for Ethan. Everyone around him regarded him with new eyes. Later Kelly started working again. And she was able to restart Brenda’s dance classes.
