表语从句
一、概念
表语从句是名词性从句中的一种。用于系动词之后,一般结构是“主语+系动词+表语从句”。
二、引导表语从句的连接词
连接词:that,whether;
连接代词:who, what, which, whom, whose, whatever, whoever, whomever, whichever等;
连接副词:when, where, why, how等;
其他连接词:because, as if, as though等。
1.由连接词that,whether引导的表语从句
that在引导表语从句时无实义,而whether有实义,意为“是否”,这时主句的主语常常是抽象名词,如question(问题),trouble(麻烦),problem(问题),result(结果),chance(可能性),suggestion(建议),idea(想法),reason(理由)等。表语从句对主句主语进行解释、说明,使主语的内容具体化。如:
The trouble is that he has lost the motivation to go forward.
麻烦的是他已经失去前进的动力。
The question is whether we can regain their sustainable support.
问题是我们是否能够重获他们持续性的支持。
2.由连接代词引导的表语从句
连接代词who, what, which, whom, whose, whatever, whoever, whomever, whichever等引导表语从句时,在从句中作主语、宾语、表语,连接代词不能省略。如:
The question is which of us should go.
问题是我们中哪个人应该去。
The problem is who can bear the responsibility.
问题是谁能承担这份责任。
That is what they have been looking forward to.
那就是他们一直所期待的。
3.由连接副词引导的表语从句
连接副词 when, where, how, why等除在句子中起连接作用外,在从句中还充当时间、地点、方式或原因状语,本身具有实义。如:
Go and get your raincoat. It’s where you left it.
去把你的雨衣拿来。它就在你原来放的地方。
I had neither a raincoat nor an umbrella. That’s why I got wet through.
我既没雨衣也没伞,那就是我全身湿透的原因。
That is how mice ruin many stores of grain every year.
每年老鼠就是这样糟蹋大量粮食的。
4.由连接词because,as if,as though等引导的表语从句。如:
It looked as if the two parties were not to give in.
看起来双方都不会让步。
That was because things went not so smoothly as we had expected.
那是因为事情并没有像我们之前预计的那样进展得那么顺利。
At that time, it seemed as though I couldn’t think of the right word anyhow.
当时,我看起来似乎怎么也想不出恰当的字眼来。
三、注意事项
1.从句一定要用陈述语序。
False: The question is when can he arrive at the hotel.
Right: The question is when he can arrive at the hotel.
2.不可以用if,而要用whether 连接表语从句。
False: The question is if the enemy is marching towards us.
Right: The question is whether the enemy is marching towards us.
3.that在表语从句中一般不能省略,但在口语中有时可省略。
4.表语从句中的虚拟语气。
主要涉及两类:第一类是表示建议、要求、命令等词的虚拟语气;第二类是 as if 和 as though 等的虚拟语气。
①表示建议、要求、命令等词的虚拟语气
一般表示要求、建议、命令、安排、决定等的名词,跟在它们后面的表语从句用虚拟语气(should) do。注意:经常会把 should 省略。如:
Our suggestion is that we (should) promote our sales by increasing our investment in advertisements.
我们的建议是我们应该通过增加广告投资来提升我们的销售量。
His request was that he (should) get paid double time during the official holidays.
他要求在法定节假日享有双倍工资。
②as if 和 as though 等的虚拟语气
as if 或 as though 引导的表语从句常置于连系动词look,appear,sound,feel等的后面,若表述真实的情况,就用陈述语气;若表述与客观事实相反的假设,则用虚拟语气。如:
It looks as if/as though the detective has uncovered the truth.
看起来那名侦探已经揭开了真相。
It looks as if/as though they were mistaken about our projects.
看上去他们对我们的项目有误解。(实际上没有)
