Ⅰ.A
根据文章第三段“Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food—beeswax—also allows them to break down plastic.”
根据文章第四段“‘The next step,’ DeBruyn says, ‘will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物) ’”可知,下一步研究是要查明这种酶来自哪里。
根据文章最后一段“But she expects to use the chemical in some kind of industrial process—not simply ‘millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic’.”
根据文章第一段“So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.” 再根据最后一段“But she expects to use the chemical in some kind of industrial process—not simply ‘millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic’.”
根据第二段中“Geersen was used to seeing rocks and stones show up on the echo sounder, but he could already tell that what he was seeing was different.”
根据第三段中“Geersen didn’t know how such a structure could have formed naturally. ‘It was only when we went to the archaeologists that they said, “You may have found something very significant.”’”
根据文章最后一段“People living during the Stone Age were more complex than we tend to believe. ‘We always think of them on the edge of starvation, trying to make a living out of the landscape. And that’s just not true,’ she says.”
根据文章大意以及第二段“One night, in the Bay of Mecklenburg, the students fired up the echo sounders (回声测深仪) and mapped the seafloor. ‘We saw that there was something special on the seafloor,’ says Geersen. They didn’t know at the time that they’d discovered a stone wall more than half a mile long dating back to the Stone Age. Geersen was used to seeing rocks and stones show up on the echo sounder, but he could already tell that what he was seeing was different.” 故选A。

“Why not do a search on the Internet ” suggested Jack. Taking his advice to heart(现在分词作状语), I acted swiftly and began to surf the Net to gather(不定式作目的状语) relevant information about the bird, including its species and habits. Following the guidance provided(现在分词作状语;过去分词作定语), we carefully placed some cotton at the bottom of the box to keep the bird warm (keep+宾语+宾补) and positioned it near the fireplace. To help it regain its strength(不定式作目的状语), we offered it some food and water. Gradually, the bird appeared more comfortable, and before long, it fell asleep. After ensuring that the bird was in good condition(宾语从句), a wave of relief washed over us.
The next day, we were glad to see the bird was well enough. It was singing and bouncing around in the rescue box. Obviously, it had regained its energy! Realizing it was fully ready for freedom(现在分词作状语), we took the box outside, placed the bird in my palm and petted it softly with mixed feelings. With the bird held up (with复合结构), I let it go. The bird was circling above us as if to express gratitude(省略结构). Jack and I looked at each other with a broad smile, feeling that we were qualified volunteer wildlife rescuers now(现在分词作状语).Period Four Writing

In the summer of 1978, an English farmer was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered that some of his wheat was lying flat on the ground. The flattened wheat formed a circle about six metres across. Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat. The five circles were in a formation like five dots.
The reason why the circles are called “crop circles” is that they appear in the fields of grain—usually wheat or corn. The grain in the circles lies flat on the ground but is never broken; it continues to grow, and farmers can later harvest it.
It is believed that beings from outer space are making the circles to communicate with us from far away and that the crop circles are messages from them.

Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills (垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste (糊状物) and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass—apparently broken down by enzymes (酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.
Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food—beeswax—also allows them to break down plastic. “Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well,” she explains. “The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond.”
Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. “The next step,” DeBruyn says, “will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物) ”
Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects to use the chemical in some kind of industrial process—not simply “millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic”.
( )1.What can we learn about the worms in the study
A.They take plastics as their everyday food.
B.They are newly evolved creatures.
C.They can consume plastics.
D.They wind up in landfills.
( )2.According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to .
A.identify other means of the breakdown
B.find out the source of the enzyme
C.confirm the research findings
D.increase the breakdown speed
( )3.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might .
A.help to raise worms
B.help make plastic bags
C.be used to clean the oceans
D.be produced in factories in future
( )4.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain a study method on worms.
B.To introduce the diet of a special worm.
C.To present a way to break down plastics.
D.To propose new means to keep eco-balance.

In the fall of 2021, Jacob Geersen, a marine geologist, was teaching a one-week field course at the University of Kiel. Students were requested to map the shape of the seafloor. For some students, it’s the best time during their studies. “Usually, if we go somewhere and do these measurements,” says Geersen, “then we find something interesting.”
One night, in the Bay of Mecklenburg, the students fired up the echo sounders (回声测深仪) and mapped the seafloor. “We saw that there was something special on the seafloor,” says Geersen. They didn’t know at the time that they’d discovered a stone wall more than half a mile long dating back to the Stone Age. Geersen was used to seeing rocks and stones show up on the echo sounder, but he could already tell that what he was seeing was different.
A year later, Geersen, his colleagues and a new group of students returned to that same site and lowered a camera down, and confirmed this ridge (脊状物) was made up of thousands of rocks that formed a kind of wall standing about 1.5 feet tall on average. Geersen didn’t know how such a structure could have formed naturally. “It was only when we went to the archaeologists that they said, ‘You may have found something very significant.’” Archaeologists on the project agreed that the wall was likely used by hunter-gatherers 10,000 to 11,000 years ago during the Stone Age to help them herd and hunt reindeer by the hundreds.
People living during the Stone Age were more complex than we tend to believe. “We always think of them on the edge of starvation, trying to make a living out of the landscape. And that’s just not true,” she says. “Instead, people in Europe were building things before these more classical structures that we think of.” However, to confirm this wall was made by humans and used to hunt, more archaeological evidence of hunting-related activities is needed.
( )5.How did Geersen view the stone wall
A.He felt it was very delicate.
B.He could find it was different.
C.He was used to touching such things.
D.He recognized it as the oldest wall.
( )6.What is the key step to confirm the value of the wall
A.Returning and re-researching.
B.Lowering a camera down.
C.Considering natural reasons.
D.Asking archaeologists for help.
( )7.What could the discovery of the stone wall mean
A.People from the Stone Age struggled to make a living.
B.People from the Stone Age depended on nature deeply.
C.Previously commonly held views might be wrong.
D.Evidence of hunting-related activities was discovered.
( )8.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Scientists discover an ancient Stone Age stone wall
B.An archaeological discovery has shocked the world
C.Human beings 10,000 years ago could already hunt
D.Stone Age life was more abundant than we thought

When I arrived home from school, night was falling. A call came from the public: a bird of unknown species was being attacked by a group of noisy children in his front garden. He scared them off and grabbed the victim. I immediately called for my classmate Jack to the spot.
We were standing in front of a stranger’s house in an unfamiliar street, rescue box in hand. My head was full of instructions to follow. “The bird would be our first test as a volunteer wildlife rescuer!” Jack said excitedly. We had completed the two-day intensive training course the previous month and learned the basic skills of rescuing animals in various situations.
But we were anxious, too. After all, it was the first time for us to rescue a bird. Would I be able to transfer the bird neatly into my rescue box Many worries flashed in my mind. Sensing my unease about the act ahead, Jack said, “These things are pretty easy to deal with!”
I was wondering what kind of bird it was when a kind-looking man appeared and led us inside to see our very first patient. I lifted the edge of the shoebox very slightly to see an angry-looking bird standing to attention on very thin and long legs, together with a slice of banana and a small dish of water. He didn’t know its true name but the folks called the creature Red Fan. “It’s eaten some banana,” said the man proudly. The poor soul seemed rather nervous, so I decided not to grab it by hand but just transfer the whole shoebox into my rescue box.
Back home, we could only see some minor injuries in the left wing, but there was no blood on its feathers. Jack managed to treat the injuries with some iodophor We assessed its condition to find out if it was appropriate to release the bird the next day. How could we help it spend the night peacefully We hadn’t seen this species of bird before, let alone its habits.
Paragraph 1:
“Why not do a search on the Internet ” suggested Jack.

Paragraph 2:
The next day, we were glad to see the bird was well enough.

Geersen. They didn't know at the time that they'd discovered a
stone wall more than half a mile long dating back to the Stone
Age. Geersen was used to seeing rocks and stones show up on
the echo sounder, but he could already tell that what he was
seeing was different.
A year later, Geersen, his colleagues and a new group of
students returned to that same site and lowered a camera down,
and confirmed this ridge (脊状物) was made up of thousands of

rocks that formed a kind of wall standing about 1.5 feet tall on
average. Geersen didn't know how such a structure could have
formed naturally. “It was only when we went to the
archaeologists that they said, ‘You may have found something
very significant.’” Archaeologists on the project agreed that the
wall was likely used by hunter-gatherers 10,000 to 11,000 years
ago during the Stone Age to help them herd and hunt reindeer
by the hundreds.

People living during the Stone Age were more complex
than we tend to believe. “We always think of them on the edge
of starvation, trying to make a living out of the landscape. And
that's just not true,” she says. “Instead, people in Europe were
building things before these more classical structures that we
think of.” However, to confirm this wall was made by humans
and used to hunt, more archaeological evidence of hunting-
related activities is needed.

When I arrived home from school, night was falling. A call
came from the public: a bird of unknown species was being
attacked by a group of noisy children in his front garden. He
scared them off and grabbed the victim. I immediately called for
my classmate Jack to the spot.
We were standing in front of a stranger's house in an
unfamiliar street, rescue box in hand. My head was full of
instructions to follow. “The bird would be our first test as a
volunteer wildlife rescuer!” Jack said excitedly. We had
completed the two-day intensive training course the previous
month and learned the basic skills of rescuing animals in various
situations.
But we were anxious, too. After all, it was the first time for
us to rescue a bird. Would I be able to transfer the bird neatly
into my rescue box Many worries flashed in my mind. Sensing
my unease about the act ahead, Jack said, “These things are
pretty easy to deal with!”
I was wondering what kind of bird it was when a kind-
looking man appeared and led us inside to see our very first
patient. I lifted the edge of the shoebox very slightly to see an
angry-looking bird standing to attention on very thin and long
legs, together with a slice of banana and a small dish of water.
He didn't know its true name but the folks called the creature
Red Fan. “It's eaten some banana,” said the man proudly. The
poor soul seemed rather nervous, so I decided not to grab it
by hand but just transfer the whole shoebox into my rescue
box.
Back home, we could only see some minor injuries in the
left wing, but there was no blood on its feathers. Jack managed
to treat the injuries with some iodophor We
assessed its condition to find out if it was appropriate to
release the bird the next day. How could we help it spend the
night peacefully We hadn't seen this species of bird before, let
alone its habits.

One possible version:
“Why not do a search on the Internet ” suggested Jack.
Taking his advice to heart(现在分词作状语), I acted swiftly and
began to surf the Net to gather(不定式作目的状语) relevant
information about the bird, including its species and habits.
定语), we carefully placed some cotton at the bottom of the
box to keep the bird warm (keep+宾语+宾补) and positioned it
near the fireplace. To help it regain its strength(不定式作目的
状语), we offered it some food and water. Gradually, the bird
appeared more comfortable, and before long, it fell asleep. After
ensuring that the bird was in good condition(宾语从句), a
wave of relief washed over us.
The next day, we were glad to see the bird was well
enough. It was singing and bouncing around in the rescue box.
Obviously, it had regained its energy! Realizing it was fully
ready for freedom(现在分词作状语), we took the box outside,
placed the bird in my palm and petted it softly with mixed
feelings. With the bird held up (with复合结构), I let it go. The
bird was circling above us as if to express gratitude(省略结构).
Jack and I looked at each other with a broad smile, feeling
that we were qualified volunteer wildlife rescuers now
