When I was 6 years old, my mom bought me a goldfish whose name was King. Some weeks after King arrived we decided to give him some friends, so I ended up with an aquarium (鱼缸) with about 15 fish. Every month, one or two fish would die and my mom used to replace them with new ones. After 3 years I lost interest in the aquarium, and my mom stopped buying new fish. The only fish remaining was King; he lived for 3 years!
Five years ago, when I was telling a friend how long my goldfish stayed with us, my mom cut in and told me the truth, “Son, your real King lived for only 3 months instead of 3 years. I replaced him after he died so you wouldn’t get upset.”
My mother is creative when it comes to deceiving. To prevent me from catching a cold after taking a shower, she always told me, “If you don’t dry yourself properly after showering, your body hair is going to grow out, making you look like a furry bear.” And her reason was simple — you water plants and they grow — similarly, you water your body and if you don’t dry, your hair grows.
When I was little, my dad told me that pressing the button on the handbrake (手刹) would make the car fly and that he only used it in an emergency as it was extremely dangerous. Back then I knew he was probably cheating me. But now, when I am stuck in a terrible traffic jam, I gently touch the button and tell myself it’s always there for me in case I need to use it as a very last thing to depend on.
I know they cheated me because they love me.

You have everything you think you need for your dream job, but could something else be holding you back You possess hard skills for the job, but you may lack soft skills.
Hard skills are things that are measurable and technical. A master's degree in business is a hard skill. The ability to speak Spanish is a hard skill. Many specific qualifications for a job are hard skills, such as years of work experience or proficiency(精通)with particular computer prograns
On the other hand, soft skills are harder to define. And they can't be defined. And they can't be measured. Soft skills covers a wide range of characteristics that you can work on for a lifetime but some of the most common and most necessary for success-include being a good listener and speaker, a wise leader,a problem solver, a strong communicator or a team player. It's also helpful if you can accept feedback, settle conflicts with others, deal with difficult people or be flexible. These soft skills are what many employers desire.
Soft skills benefit you in many ways. Being a good listener, for example, is very helpful if you're a doctor.Being flexible,a team player and a problem solver help you succeed when dealing with deadlines.
Soft skills are something extra that help a particular person to success. Being able to show you possess them could make a difference in landing a job you'll love, or being more successful in the job you already have. They make the difference between someone who is just OK at their job and someone who is outstanding, the person you always want on your team. In general, soft skills make you more likable and more competent.
Soft skills are what can set people apart from one another, but soft skills don’t come naturally.
8. What is the best title for the passage
A. Hard Skills Differ from Soft Skills.
B. Soft Skills Can Be learnt at School.

A. are certain inborn qualities
B. help one stand out from the others
C. are more difficult to gain than hard skills
D. attract the employers more easily than hard skills
11. What will the author most probably talk about afterwards
A. Why soft skills are important.
B. What skills belong to soft skills.
C. How soft skills are developed.
D. Where soft skills are mostly used.

The world’s elderly population is increasing. The number of older people — those aged 60 years or older — is expected to double by 2050 and is growing faster than all younger age groups across the world. That comes with an increasing need for caregivers who can provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Already, caregiving robots are programmed to ask questions a nurse would ask and can keep an eye on patients for falls. These robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450,000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the United States.
“Unluckily, the hard structure of present caregiving robots prevents them from a safe human-robot interaction, limiting their assistance to only social interaction and not physical interaction,” said Ramses Martinez, an assistant professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “After all, would you leave babies or old people in the hands of a robot ”
Recent advances in material science have enabled the production of soft robots with deformable (可变形) bodies or the ability to reshape themselves when touched, but today the complex design prevents the use of this technology at home.
However, Martinez and other researchers have developed a new design method which shows promise in enabling the production of soft robots using a 3-D printer.
The design process has three steps. First, a user makes a computer-aided design file with the shape of the robot. The user then paints the file to show which directions the different joints of the soft robot will move. It takes the computer a few seconds to change the computer-aided design model into a 3-D soft machine that can be printed using any 3-D printer.
“The soft machines move like humans. Their ability to change their body structure and movement to adapt to a wide variety of environments will improve caregiving greatly,” says Martinez.
The researchers are looking for partners to test and bring their technology to the market.
12. Why does the market urgently need caregiving robots
A. The basic needs of the nursing homes.
B. The results of advanced technology.
C. The rapid increase in the global aging population.
D. The continuous decrease in birth rate.
13. What makes it difficult for people to accept caregiving robots
A. They can’t communicate with the patients freely.
B. They can’t offer convincing physical interaction.
C. They can’t update the service in a timely manner.
D. They can’t truly empathize with the old patients.
14. How to evaluate Martinez’s new design method
A. It allows the computer to fully automate the robot production.
B. It requires a specific 3-D printer to print out a soft robot.
C. It takes a long time to print a soft robot with a 3-D printer.
D. It makes the production of soft robots easier to operate.
15. What is the most important thing for the researchers to do now
A. Ensure the technology is widely accepted and applied.
B. Train more users to earn money for further research.
C. Ask the manufacturers to produce a variety of products.
D. Investigate the market preferences to guide future development.

第二节 (满分25分)

I was nominated (提名) for our school’s debate team. I jumped at the chance. When I got home that day, I began to fill out the application form, trying hard to prove how I met all the team’s criteria: strong communication skills, teamwork, and a good understanding of current events.
The next day, I handed in my application and waited with eagerness. I was on tenterhooks (如坐针毡) , anticipation building up with each tick of the clock.
Two weeks went by, and I received a letter from the school about the debate team, which began with “I’m sorry to…”. As soon as the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the computer.
“Mom,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, “I didn’t make the debate team.”
She looked up, a smile playing on her lips, thinking I was joking, and playfully reached out to high-five me. But the tears in my eyes told a different story.
“No, really, I wasn’t picked,” I told her, handing her the letter.
Her smile faded, replaced by a look of genuine concern. “Oh, sweetheart, I’m sorry,” she said, surprised. “There must be some mistake.” She called the debate team advisor, but he confirmed there were no mistakes and the decision was final. Hearing that, I broke down and burst out crying.
The rejection stung (刺痛) me, especially when I saw friends celebrating their acceptance. I felt cheated, questioning the fairness of the process. In my view, some selected didn’t deserve it as much as I did. Bitterness crept (潜入) into my words as I complained.
“I’m the best fit for the team,” I protested.
“See, Jenny, complaining won’t get you on the team.” Mom gave me a serious look.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stared at Mom and listened eagerly.

46. Sports Meet Fired Passion on Campus
The annual school sports meet for the year 2024 finally came and the whole school was plunged into a recreational, sporting atmosphere. The event began on the 30th of October and lasted for three days.
On the morning of the 30th, the teaching staff and all the students in their sportswear gathered for the opening ceremony, where each class staged a creative and praise-worthy performance, a long-awaited traditional highlight. Immediately after that came the track and field events, including relay races, high jump, long-distance running and so on.
Challenging as these events were, all the athletes gave full play to their willpower, showing their positive sports spirits and enjoying the enthusiastic cheers from the audience. The sports meet was a great success, with nine records broken. And it was also a success beyond winning competitions. Not only did it witness students’ passion for sports, but it also exhibited their collaboration and team spirit.
47. 参考范文:
I stared at Mom and listened eagerly. She shared her own stories of failure and disappointment and how she turned them into opportunities for growth. “Every rejection is a lesson,” she said. With her guidance, I spent the next three months improving my skills. I practiced debates, read extensively to stay updated on current events, and sought feedback from teachers and peers. I even started a debate club after school to gain more experience.
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later. When the team needed an extra member for an upcoming tournament, they considered my dedication and improvement. This time, I was ready. My performance in the tryouts was confident and well-prepared. Joining the team was a sweet victory, but the real win was in the resilience I had built and the lessons I had learned along the way. My mother’s wisdom had steered me through a tough time, and I was grateful for the journey that had made me a better debater and a stronger person.
