A New Hampshire woman has raised nearly $400,000 for an elderly disabled man named Donald, who has been battling to keep up with bills while caring for his wife. The story began when Jenelle encountered Donald at a pawn (典当) shop in Manchester, where he was unwillingly pawning jewelry to cover his bills.
Donald shared with Jenelle the hardships he was facing; his rent had increased and he was finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet while caring for his wife. He feared they might lose their home and that his beloved wife could end up in a care facility due to their financial pressure. Deeply moved by his situation, Jenelle immediately took action. She gathered $1,300 from her own savings and contributions from friends and family to help the 90-year-old. A video she shared of Donald receiving the money quickly went viral, recording the moment he called Jenelle “an angel”.
The outpouring of support didn’t stop there. Jenelle set up a GoFundMe page for Donald, and the response was overwhelming (无法抗拒的). Donations poured in from around the world, bringing the total to nearly $400,000. In an update, Jenelle shared the emotional moment she told Donald about the incredible generosity of strangers. “I told him that meant that everyone in the world was seeing this and stepping forward to donate,” she said. “Even before I told him the amount, he was already extremely emotional and couldn’t believe the kindness of strangers across the world.”
Despite the outpouring of support, Donald remained humble, insisting he didn’t deserve it and that he was “just an ordinary man”. But as Jenelle explained to him, he’s much more than that to the countless people who have been touched by his story. Jenelle plans to keep the fundraiser open until she and Donald can meet with an attorney (代理人) to ensure the money is safely managed. This remarkable act of kindness shows how the generosity of strangers can transform lives, offering hope and security to those who need it most.
24. What’s Donald’s difficulty
A. Making ends meet. B. Caring for his wife.
C. Pawning his jewelry. D. Managing his movement.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about

A. Limited. B. Regular. C. Occasional. D. Viral.
27. What can we conclude from the text

The decision to act appropriately with first aid can mean the difference between life and death. Begin by introducing yourself to the injured or ill person. Explain that you are a first aid provider and are willing to help. The person must give you permission to help them; do not touch them until they agree to be helped. If you encounter a confused person or someone who is critically injured or ill, you can assume that they would want you to help them. This is known as “implied consent”.
The first step in any emergency is the recognition of the problem and providing help. When in doubt or when someone is seriously injured or ill, you should always activate the emergency response system by calling 911 in the United States, or your own locality’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number. If you’re not sure how serious the situation is, the 911/EMS operator will ask you a series of questions to determine the severity of the situation.
Remain on the line until additional help arrives, or until the 911/EMS operator tells you to hang up. Emergency system dispatchers (调度员) can guide you through the steps of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (心肺复苏), using an automated external defibrillator (AED) (自动体外除颤器), or delivering basic care until additional help arrives.
Whether you are at home, work, or school, know where the first aid kit and the AED are kept and be familiar with their contents. Know how to activate the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in your area. Be aware of any policies in the workplace regarding medical emergencies.
After determining the problem, the next step in providing help is to determine the responsiveness of the injured or ill person. The best way to determine this is to tap (轻拍) the person and talk loudly to them: “Are you okay ” After determining responsiveness, call for help. Look for any medical identifications, such as a necklace or a bracelet. This may provide a valuable clue to the cause of the situation.
28. What does the underlined word “consent” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Agreement. B. Refusal. C. Helpfulness. D. Dangerous.
29. What’s the most important step to make sure your first aid is essential
A. Giving first aids as quickly as possible. B. Analyzing conditions of the injured or ill.
C. Asking the injured or ill many questions. D. Moving the victims to the roadside and wait.
30. What’s the best way to know the responsiveness of the injured or ill person
A. Letting them call for help. B. Analyzing the situations.
C. Communicating with them. D. Finding any identifications.
31. What might be talked about in the part following the text
A. How to determine responsiveness. B. Some additional first aid measures.
C. How to ask for victims’ permission. D. The weaknesses of some first aids.

More than 3 million square kilometers of the Asian elephant’s historic habitat range has been lost in just three centuries, a new report from an international scientific team led by a University of California San Diego researcher reveals. This dramatic decline may underlie present-day conflicts between elephants and people, the authors argue.
Developing new insights from a unique data set that models land-use change over 13 centuries, a research team led by new UC San Diego member Shermin de Silva found that habitats suitable for Asian elephants have been cut by nearly two-thirds within the past 300 years.
The largest living land animal in Asia, endangered Asian elephants inhabited grasslands and rainforest ecosystems that once crossed the continent. Analyzing land-use data from the years 850 to 2015, the researchers describe in the journal Scientific Reports a troubling situation in which they estimate that more than 64% of historic suitable elephant habitat across Asia has been lost. While elephant habitats remained relatively stable prior to the 1700s, colonial-era land-use practices in Asia, including forest decrease, farming and agriculture, cut the average habitat size more than 80%, from 99,000 to 16,000 square kilometers.
The study also suggests that the remaining elephant populations today may not have enough habitat areas. While 100% of the area within 100 kilometers of the current elephant range was considered suitable habitat in 1700, the proportion (比例) has since declined to less than 50% by 2015. This sets up a high potential for conflicts with people living in those areas as elephant populations change their behavior and adjust to more human-dominated spaces.
“In the 1600s and 1700s there is evidence of a dramatic change in land use, not just in Asia, but globally,” said de Silva, an assistant professor in the School of Biological Sciences’ Department of Ecology, Behavior and Evolution, and founder of the nonprofit Trunks & Leaves. “Around the world we see a really dramatic transformation that has consequences that last even to this day.”
32. What did the new report focus on
A. Number of conflicts between elephants and people.
B. Changes of the living habitats for Asian elephants.
C. The measures for agricultural models of land-use.
D. Methods to deal with conflicts between man and animals.
33. What’s the main cause about the loss of the elephant habitats
A The increase of elephant population.
B. People’s living styles in the past 300 years.
C. Human activities in elephants’ ecosystems.
D. Endangered Elephants’ bad health conditions.
34. Which can best describe de Silva’s attitude toward the environment
A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Toleratant. D. Concerned.
35. What is the suitable title for the text
A. Conflicts Between Elephants and Humans
B. Loss of Asian Elephant’s habitat Range
C. Necessary Change for Elephant Populations
D. Human’s Efforts on Saving Asian Elephants

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a child I lived in a working class area on the west side of Wichita. There was a bridge over the river half a block away from where I lived, and on the other side, there was Calvin’s Hamburger Haven. It was one of those old small restaurants converted from a trailer (拖车) — just a counter and the grill behind, where Mr Calvin worked.
Mr Calvin was a thin, quiet man. He wasn’t very talkative, but, unlike many business owners in those days, he didn’t seem to mind kids hanging around and looking at the envelopes of stamps on the walls.
The stamps fascinated me. I had my father’s stamp album (he’d died when I was less than one year old), but had never thought about being a collector myself. When I asked about them, Mr Calvin took time to tell me about the different kinds, the tools of collecting and so on. He was a collector himself, and, with his advice and information, I also became one. One day he asked if I wanted to go to a meeting of his stamp club.
The second day, my mother dropped me off at Mr Calvin’s house, a big old Victorian house. I was the only child there, and that was the first time I had the feeling that the other men — mostly middle-aged and wealthy, and now I know that some were locally outstanding — were annoyed a kid was there. He let me care for myself, sure enough that I could. And very quickly, I found myself in conversations about stamps, being shown specialized collections and being given serious advice. That I could so easily fit in with a group like that was amazing to me — and it was the beginning of the understanding that I didn’t have to remain in the world I lived in.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

【答案】范文
Years later, I took my grade-school children on a walking tour of the area where I’d lived. As we approached, vivid memories flooded back. I pointed out the quaint restaurant, sharing heartwarming stories of Mr. Calvin and his beloved stamps. Inside, little had changed; the counter, grill, and stamp-filled envelopes still adorned the walls. With pride, I introduced my kids to the man who had sparked my lifelong collecting passion. They listened intently, eyes wide with wonder, as I recounted my cherished childhood experiences.
Tears rolled down my face for Mr Calvin’s death. He was not just a business owner; he was a cherished mentor and friend.
