Text 1
W: I must say, the food was great and I’ve never had better service.
M: Well, thank you, ma’am. I’ll pass your praise on to the cook and the manager. And thanks again for the tip.
Text 2
M: Can I help you
W: I’m looking for a size twelve dress.
M: Oh, let me see. An eight, a ten…Ah, you’re lucky. I have the prettiest dress here in a twelve. Why don’t you try it on
Text 3
M: Oh, no! Look at the line! There are so many people.
W: I didn’t realize it was such a popular film. Hurry up, or we won’t see it today.
Text 4
W: I’ve almost finished typing half of the report.
M: Tell me when it’s ready. The boss needs it this morning.
W: I’ll give it to you to check immediately I finish it.
Text 5
W: That is a great movie, isn’t it It has some really funny parts, and I think the actors are really good.
M: I agree about the acting, but I don’t think it is funny. I don’t care much for the music.
Text 6
W: I would like to exchange this dress.
M: Can I ask why
W: Well, to tell the truth, it fits me well and the price is reasonable. But my husband says that this colour doesn’t look good on me.
M: Oh, I see. You can exchange this dress with anything of the same value. Or if there’s nothing you like, you can have your money back.
W: OK! I want this pair of shoes.
Text 7
M: Have you decided how much you’re going to ask for your flat, ma’am
W: Not yet. Oh, I’m totally at a loss where to start.
M: Well, you need to consider several factors, like the size, location, condition. Um…how big is your flat
W: Two bedrooms.
M: That’s not very big. Is it downtown
W: Yes. It’s just a block away from the finance centre.
M: Well, that certainly adds to its value. Is it in good shape
W: It was built in the ‘90s, but we’ve just had it redecorated.
M: You also need to consider the prices of other flats in the neighbourhood.
W: Sure, sure.
M: Can you decide on the offer price now
W: Um, probably not. I’d better talk with my husband first. Thanks for the information though. I’ll contact you when we have decided.
Text 8
M: Are you going for the job interview tomorrow
W: Yes. I need to get to their office on Lincoln Street at 10:00 am. Can you drive me there tomorrow
M: Yes, of course. It’d take too long to get there by bus or subway. Are you prepared for the interview
W: I think so. But I’m kind of nervous. I don’t have much work experience.
M: Relax. You’re a great engineer, and I’m sure you’re the right person they are looking for.
W: Maybe. I don’t think I’m good enough at French.
M: What are you talking about Your French is really good. I was impressed by the way you talked to those people we met on holiday last year.
W: Yeah, but that was just simple daily conversations.
M: Well, I think you’re very talented at learning languages. I’m sure you’ll become good at it in no time.
W: Thank you for encouraging me. I’m still worried, though.
M: We’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we
Text 9
M: Hi Nancy! You look worried. What’s wrong
W: Well, Daniel, have you ever felt nervous on stage
M: Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word.
W: That’s how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week.
M: I didn’t know you made it to the finals.
W: I’m worried I’ll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don’t know what to do.
M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to spell your name. I’ll help you get through this. I’ll go to the school hall with you to practise. Then I’ll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.
W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.
Text 10
W: Get ready to say goodbye to today’s warm, sunny weather. Just when millions of people are getting ready for the Christmas holiday, three storms are expected to make problems for holiday travellers. None of the storms will be strong, but the cold air will make travelling difficult. The first storm will arrive on this weekend. It will bring rain to the northeast, but warm air in New York City might cause some fog and low clouds. It will be hard for drivers to see the road clearly. Later in the week, snow will come to the northwest states, with three inches falling in Saint Paul, Minnesota. And a few days later, just when the New Year’s celebrations are scheduled, Boston will be covered with freezing rain. The ice will cause problems for anyone trying to travel on foot, with one inch of ice expected on city roads. New Year’s will be cold in Chicago, too, with a strong wind blowing water from the river onto anyone hoping to celebrate by the water.

Dear Tom,
Knowing that you are interested in traditional Chinese music, I’m writing to invite you to join us for the Chinese National Musical Instrument Show.
The show is scheduled to start on this weekend in the City Museum. There will be various traditional musical instruments on exhibition. Besides, some well-known musicians will be present to play beautiful music with the instruments. In my opinion, it is a good chance for us to have a better understanding of Chinese culture and widen our horizons.
I would be glad if you could write back to me as soon as possible.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Meanwhile, her new classmates were busy working on something. They were going to give Eva their “hearts”. Quickly but quietly, Ms Robins, with an exquisite paper bag she fetched from her office (定语从句), was walking around the classroom to collect the candy hearts. Growing heavy with the paper bag was the students’ welcome for their new classmate. Sitting beside Eva (现在分词作状语), Chase felt his heart racing and palms sweating (重要搭配:feel+宾语+宾补). In order not to ruin the new year surprise for Eva, he pretended to be discussing (重要搭配:pretend to be doing 假装正在做……) maths problems with her to occupy her attention. The stone in his heart finally dropped when Ms Robins walked towards him and placed the paper bag on his hands (时间状语从句).
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone,” said Chase. Surprise written on Eva’s face (独立主格结构), she turned around and was greeted by the sunny smiles on her classmates’ faces. “Open it,” Chase encouraged her. No sooner had she opened the paper bag than everybody cheered (重要搭配:no sooner…than…一……就……),“Happy New Year”. The candies which were made in the shape of hearts (定语从句) blurred her eyes. If only she had been able to express how much this precious gift meant to her (if only引导的虚拟语气). Springing from her seat(现在分词作状语), she stepped forward and bowed to her new but considerate classmates, who not only erased her anxiety but also planted the seed of hope in her heart(who引导的非限制性定语从句;重要搭配:not only…but also…不但……而且……). What a hearty welcome(感叹句)!模块素养测评卷

Born in 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya, Wangari Maathai spent her childhood in the Kenyan countryside and her young adult life in the United States. She studied biology at Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas, and then obtained a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After returning to Kenya and pursuing her PhD at the University of Nairobi, Wangari became the first woman in East Africa to receive a doctor’s degree.
In the 1970s, Wangari was an active member of the National Council of Women of Kenya. Women came to the council in part to search for solutions to the environmental problems—deforestation and desertification had caused many of the resources women relied on for food and clean water to decrease.
Fuelled by her knowledge of biology and her passion for helping others, Wangari decided to take action. Wangari had two goals in mind: to help restore environmental resources and give women the ability to support their families in a self-sufficient, sustainable way. To achieve her goals, she came up with a practical and impactful idea: to plant trees. The trees would reduce the effects of deforestation, in addition to providing food and firewood for local families. Wangari’s plan inspired the formation of the Green Belt Movement in 1977, an organisation dedicated to environmental conservation and poverty reduction in Kenya.
As the Green Belt Movement grew, Wangari began to focus on several different but interconnected causes: environmental conservation and human rights. In the late 1980s, she called on her community to oppose the construction of a skyscraper (摩天大楼) in Uhuru Park, Nairobi’s central public space. In 1999, she led a protest against the privatisation of Karura Forest in Nairobi, during which Green Belt Movement members were beaten by private guards. Not all birds sing, but some species (物种) do it a lot. They sing to protect their place and impress possible mates (配偶). “Why birds sing is relatively well answered,” says Iris Adam, a behavioural neuroscientist at the University of Southern Denmark. The big question was:Why do birds sing so often
In a new study, Adam and her team members offer a new explanation, suggesting that songbirds may have to sing a lot to give their vocal (发声的) muscles the regular exercise they need to produce top-quality song. These findings could be related to human voices too. “Anytime you stop speaking, you might experience a loss in vocal performance,” said Adam. “Songbirds one day could help us improve how we train and restore our own voices.”
To figure out whether the muscles that produce birdsong require daily exercise, Adam designed a set of experiments on zebra finches.
One of her first experiments was about taking males at the top of their game, and cutting off the connection between their brains and singing muscles. “After two days, they had lost some of their performance,” she said. “And after three weeks, they were back to the same level when they were young and never had sung before.”
Next she prevented the birds from singing for a week by keeping them in the dark almost around the clock. After a week, the birds’ vocal muscles lost half their strength. When she played a male’s song for a group of female birds, six out of nine preferred the song that came from a male who’d been using his singing muscles daily.
Adam’s finding is that “songbirds need to exercise their vocal muscles to produce top-performance song. If they don’t sing, they lose performance, and they get less attractive to females”.
It’s a good rule to live by, whether you’re a bird or a human—practice makes perfect, at least when it comes to singing one’s heart out.
( )28.What’s the focus of Adam and her team members’ study
A.How birds train their vocal muscles.
B.The effect of music on birds’ behaviour.
C.The relationship between brain function and birds’ song.
D.Whether birds need to sing often to keep their singing ability.

B.They became more attractive to females.
C.Their vocal muscles lost half their strength.
D.They didn’t show any change in singing performance.
( )30.How did the female birds react to the male bird using vocal muscles daily
A.They did not show any preference.
B.Most of them preferred the male bird’s song.
C.They found the male bird’s song less attractive.
D.None of them were interested in the male bird’s song.
( )31.What’s the main message conveyed by the study
A.Birds need to sing to impress possible mates.
B.Birds sing to mark their place and attract females.
C.Regular exercise is for keeping birds’ singing performance.
D.Humans’ singing performance can be improved by studying songs.

Everywhere you go, it seems like people are using something to reduce the noise in their lives. They wear over-ear headphones on public transportation, during long flights, or in open-plan offices, or use coloured earplugs (耳塞) at concerts. Silence is now big business, with the global market for noise-cancelling headphones bringing $13.1 billion in 2021. Experts predict that this figure will triple by 2031. While these market-based solutions are becoming popular, they raise a question: Are there physical and social effects of shutting out the world around us
Noise-cancelling technology was first developed in the 1950s to reduce cockpit noise for pilots. The headphones today use technology known as active noise control. However, too much of a good thing also has its downside. Many studies have shown that constant earplug-wearing, day and night, over just one week can lead to a condition known as tinnitus (耳鸣). “When you stop listening to outside sounds, your brain starts to turn up its ‘internal volume’ so that it can still pick up on things,” McAlpine says. “If you stop the sound going into your ears, it’s like disturbing how your brain is supposed to work naturally.”
When it comes to distraction (干扰), the type of noise may matter as much as volume. Moderate (适中的) background noise, around 70dB, has been found to advance performance on creative tasks, for example. “Some people can work really effectively in buzzy cafes and even airports, and yet they can’t focus in the same way in an office, even if it isn’t as noisy,” McAlpine says. “Your brain in the office is automatically paying attention to all those other conversations—because they might be about something you need to know.”
How, then, can we deal with all the loud distraction in our modern lives An over-dependence on noise-cancelling technology is not necessarily the solution, says McAlpine. “We have given more control to outside sources over our sound environment compared to our visual environment,” he says. “If people started wearing AR/VR goggles and living in their own virtual worlds instead of focusing on improving the physical environment, that’s problematic.”
( )32.What is the purpose of noise-cancelling headphones
A.To pick up the sounds.
B.To reduce the rate of tinnitus.
C.To improve performance on creative tasks.
D.To create a sense of silence in noisy environments.
( )33.Which statement is TRUE according to the article
A.Wearing noise-cancelling headphones has no physical or social costs.
B.Creative task performance can be improved by the moderate background noise.
C.Noise-cancelling technology was first developed in the 1950s for concertgoers.
D.The global market for noise-cancelling headphones is believed to drop by 2031.
( )34.What does the underlined word “buzzy” mean in the third paragraph
A.Lively. B.Advanced.
C.Interesting. D.Quiet.
( )35.What attitude does McAlpine hold towards the over-dependence on the technology
A.Negative. B.Objective.
C.Optimistic. D.Indifferent.

The power of insensitivity
Highly sensitive (敏感的) person, or HSP, is a term invented by psychologist Elaine Aron. HSPs can come with many challenges. They may find it hard to adapt to new surroundings, and easily become uncomfortable in response to certain feelings or others’ opinions. 36.
The power of insensitivity can be explained as “slow power”. Usually, people connect insensitivity with something bad, but indeed, it stresses the ability to keep doing something difficult without complaining.37. It is not a weakness but an approach to winning a better life.
38. Knowing yourself is difficult, and knowing yourself correctly is undoubtedly an excellent ability. The successful people clearly know where their strengths are, what they can do and what direction to go.
There are some ways to practise insensitivity: don’t pay too much attention to the ups and downs of life at the moment. 39. Don’t get involved in other people’s lives and don’t let others affect yours. Regarding relationships, learn to view problems as two parts. One part is what you need to face and solve. The other part is the responsibility of others, which is not your business.
Everyone can gain the ability to be insensitive. 40. And the world will also be a better one if we focus on major goals and stay insensitive to something else.
A.Insensitivity plays a significant role.
B.Rather, you should be looking forward.
C.That’s where the need to be insensitive comes from.
D.Once you slow down the pace, you will feel more comfortable.
E.Those not easily affected are the people who care less about others.
F.That is, calmly face the sad time in life and move towards one’s own direction.
G.One reason why insensitivity allows people to better survive is the strong self-awareness.

A hearty welcome
Chase counted his new year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class ” Mum asked.
“Yep!” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms Robins and looked around shyly.
“This is Eva,” said Ms Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today ”Chase raised his hand since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks, Chase,”Ms Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.”
That’s when Chase realized he didn’t have a new year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.
At break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Eva had brought a packed lunch, so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.
While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they exchanged. This won’t be New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as he sat down at his table, an idea flooded into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.
When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms Robins about their plan. Ms Robins smiled. “That’s very thoughtful,” she said. “Let’s go for it.”
It was maths time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the students so she wouldn’t notice.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Meanwhile, her new classmates were busy working on something.

Paragraph 2:
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone,” said Chase.
