M: Susan, I want to book a table at The Duce for tonight. Do you know its number
W: Yes. You can call 602-866-3823 to book a table.
M: Got it. Thank you.
Text 2
W: Your blood pressure is up. How are you feeling Any better
M: Yeah, my wounds don’t hurt that much but I still have a fever.
Text 3
M: Please shut the windows. It’s getting hot in here. I’ll turn the air on, instead.
W: I hate keeping the windows closed, but I think you’re right. It must be 100 degrees outside today.
Text 4
M: Those are nice dogs. What are their names
W: This one is Paddy and the other is Smudge. They have a sister called Chloe, but she’s at home today.
M: It must cost you a lot for dog food.
Text 5
W: We had a great meal at the new place on High Street. The one across the road does good food as well.
M: Have you tried the Indian restaurant in the town centre I’ve heard good reports about it.
Text 6
M: Good morning. How can I help you
W: Hello, I need to get this dress cleaned. I spilled pasta sauce on it last night. It’s silk, so I can’t wash it at home. Is it ruined
M: Oh, no, I can get that out for you. It will be ready tomorrow morning.
W: I’m going to a work event tonight and I need to wear it. Can you have it ready by this afternoon
M: Sure, I can do that for you. Why not come back around 4: 00 pm
W: That’s perfect. Thank you so much.
Text 7
W: Have you seen my garden yet It’s my first time growing one and, so far, it’s going really well. I didn’t have any time before, but I decided it was time to develop a new hobby.
M: That sounds interesting. What are you growing
W: Mostly fruits and some grains because I don’t like eating most vegetables. I know vegetables and grains are healthier than fruits but they definitely don’t taste as good.
M: That’s true! So, what are you doing right now
W: I’m just watering the strawberry plants and the orange tree. I also wanted to grow a pear tree, but the dry climate here is not right for it.
M: That sounds really cool.
W: Maybe you can have a try in your garden as well.
M: I’ll consider it.
Text 8
W: So, where are we going to have the party, Andrew Your home
M: It’s an outdoor party. Sandy’s Restaurant near our school has an outdoor space big enough for a barbecue party.
W: If we hold it in a restaurant, then we have to buy food from the restaurant. That would be expensive. We don’t plan to spend much money, you know that.
M: What about your home, Jane
W: Well, I need to ask my parents first. I just had a birthday party last week, so I hope my parents will permit it this time.
M: Thanks, Jane. We will do the clean-up after the party. When shall we have the party, then
W: I think Saturday evening is perfect. It’s usually from 6 pm to 9 pm.
M: OK. Then we can settle everything else for the party, including the food to bring, the music and the games.
W: I’ve made a list with more than a hundred songs. Enough for 5 hours of music.
M: I’ll send the invitations to our friends this afternoon, and I hope our friends will reply soon.
Text 9
M: Receiving a good education means that you will have more options when you try to find a job.
W: Did you go to university, sir
M: I have been to three different universities. That is how much I love learning.
W: So are you a teacher
M: Not in the same way as your other teachers. I go around schools giving students talks about university life, to prepare them and help them if they are looking to apply. Do you want to go to university
W: I do, but I don’t know what I want to study.
M: What subjects are you strong on
W: I get good grades in maths and physics, but I want to be a writer.
M: Then you should study writing and maybe languages, too.
W: Even though I want to go, I am not sure whether my family can afford to send me.
M: That’s another reason I visit schools. The universities I work for offer help and support when it comes to funding education.
W: I’m so glad to hear that. Now please tell me more about it.
Text 10
W: Good evening, and welcome to the Channel 5 weather report. This weekend we expect to see stormy weather throughout the north-east region. Along the coast, there will be strong winds and heavy rain starting Friday. For those living further inland, away from the ocean, it will be less windy, but it will still be a very wet weekend. If you live in or near the mountains, stay warm and get ready for the heavy snow! Icy roads and snow will make it dangerous to go out or travel on Saturday, so it’ll be best to do indoor activities at home. Local officials are warning of possible power cuts throughout the entire region. We at Channel 5 encourage everyone to keep a flashlight and spare batteries at home in case there’s no electricity. We also want to remind you to keep your mobile phones and battery packs fully charged. Fortunately, this storm system should pass quickly, and you can look forward to sunny skies starting Tuesday.

One possible version:
Without wasting another moment, Jackie rushed outside to the painting room. After she entered the painting room, she scanned the room for any sign of her missing book. When she scanned the messy shelves (时间状语从句), she finally saw a familiar sight. Among her art supplies, there was her library book with the red cover that she had been desperately searching for (定语从句). A wave of relief washed over her, and she couldn’t believe her luck. She found the book in time. She dashed to Sasha outside, who had been patiently waiting for her all the time (定语从句).
Rushing to the library, Jackie and Sasha found the door still open. The librarian was about to lock it. Jackie rushed in, with the book held tightly in her hand (with复合结构), and explained the situation hurriedly. The librarian listened, a mixture of amusement and empathy on her face, and then nodded, allowing Jackie to return the book (现在分词作状语). With the book safely returned (with复合结构), Jackie and Sasha left the library, a weight lifted off their shoulders. Jackie learned the importance of taking care of her belongings, grateful for the lesson learned in such a memorable way (过去分词作后置定语).阶段素养测评卷(一)

Before we work on the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I would like to give two suggestions that will greatly add the value you will receive from this material.
First, I would recommend that you do not see this material as a book, in the sense that it is something just read once and put on a shelf.
You may choose to read it through once for a sense of the whole, but the material is designed to be a companion in the continual process of change and growth. As you progress to deeper levels of understanding and practice, you are supposed to go back time and again to the principles contained in each habit and work to expand your knowledge, skill, and desire.
Second, I would suggest that you change from the role of learner to that of a teacher while reading this material. Take an inside-out approach and read with the purpose of sharing or discussing what you learn with someone else within 48 hours after you learn it. Read as though you are going to teach it to others, while it is still fresh, and notice the difference in your mental and emotional process.
I am sure if you approach the material in this way, you will not only better remember what you read, but your perspective will be expanded, your understanding deepened, and your motivation to apply the material increased.
In addition, as you openly, honestly share what you are learning with others, you will be surprised to find that negative labels (负面标签) or perceptions others may have had of you tend to disappear. Those you teach will see you as a changing, growing person and will be more likely to be helpful and supportive as you work, perhaps together to integrate the seven habits into your lives.
( )24.Which part is the text most probably taken from
A.How to use this book.
B.“Habits” defined.
C.The power of principles.
D.What you can expect.
( )25.What does the author suggest readers do
A.Read the book once and shelve it.
B.Read for knowledge and skills.
C.Read the book time and again.
D.Read the book as a learner.
( )26.What is the expected result if readers follow the suggestions
A.Find better approaches.
B.Build better memories.
C.Improve reading skills.
D.Better understand the book.
( )27.Which is closest in meaning to “perceptions” in the last paragraph
A.Attractions. B.Beliefs.
C.Treatments. D.Capabilities.
C
The International Energy Agency (IEA) says many world electrical grids (电网) will need major improvements to support international climate change goals. In a new report, the IEA calls on nations to invest in ageing electrical grid systems. The Paris-based organization works with member governments to help them shape energy policies.
The IEA examined electricity grids in countries across the world to produce its report. The report found that, for the most part, electrical grid systems have not kept up with clean energy technologies like solar, wind, electric cars and heat pumps. One of the main findings is that to meet all national climate and energy goals, about 80 million kilometres of power lines will have to be added or replaced by 2040. The report noted that this amount is equal to the whole existing worldwide electricity grids.
The 2015 Paris climate agreement has set a goal to limit warming worldwide to 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. Climate scientists believe the way to meet that goal is to reduce the use of greenhouse gases.
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol spoke to reporters from The Associated Press about the report. He said there are many renewable energy projects waiting to connect to electricity systems. But currently, most grids are not equipped to work with the greener technology. If grid changes could be completed, the projects could produce about 1,500 gigawatts of power. This is about five times the amount of solar and wind capacity added worldwide last year. If investments do not increase, the chance of reaching the Paris agreement’s goal drops sharply.
However, the IEA notes that it is not uncommon for a single high-power overhead power line to take 5 to 13 years to get government approvals in developed economies. One project in Germany, first planned in 2014, was delayed after political opposition to an overhead line, which meant it was buried pletion of the project is now expected in 2028 instead of 2022. Other important projects are delayed, including the 400-kilometre Bay of Biscay connector between Spain and France. Officials expect to finish the work in 2028 instead of 2025.

Suppose you come across two doctors. One is handsome while the other looks plain. Who would you trust with your surgery Most people would probably want to get treated by the handsome one. And most people are likely to be wrong about that.
When you look at the sun, you sometimes see it clearly. But sometimes you’ll see its shining way is bigger than its actual shape. That circle of light called a halo makes it look bigger. This effect, known as the halo effect, also happens when a person, product, or company shines like the sun. Then we don’t see them clearly and associate all sorts of unrelated qualities with them.
The halo effect was once studied by the psychologist Edward Thorndike, who asked flight commanders to evaluate their pilots in various distinct aspects such as physical appearance, intelligence, and leadership. He found that the pilots who got high scores for their physical appearance, also got rated high on intelligence and leadership skills—a link that seemed wrong. It appears that the commanders were unable to evaluate specific qualities independently of others. They thought of their pilots in broad terms, either “good” or “bad”, and allowed this general feeling to influence the specific qualities they credited to their pilots. Some pilots profited from their haloes.
The halo effect also explains why some teachers give better-looking students higher grades. One study looked at the grades of 4,500 pupils, who were sorted by volunteers into three groups: below-average, average, and above-average looking. The researchers then compared students’ grades between classes taken in conventional classrooms with those taken online where there was no face-to-face interaction. The researchers found that students who were rated as good-looking earned significantly lower grades in online courses compared to conventional classrooms.
Since the physical appearance of good-looking people seems to naturally make them also appear intelligent, strong, and trustworthy, here is one good rule. If you meet with an accident and have to choose between two equally qualified doctors, ignore their haloes and choose the less handsome one. He might have worked twice as hard to gain the same reputation and is likely better at his job.
( )32.What is the purpose of the second paragraph
A.To explore a natural wonder.
B.To spread scientific knowledge.
C.To explain a psychological tendency.
D.To interpret social rules at the workplace.
( )33.How did the commanders tend to evaluate their pilots in Thorndike’s study
A.In a general way.
B.With common sense.
C.From a specific aspect.
D.By an objective criterion.
( )34.What does the 4,500-pupil study find about better-looking students
A.They were fairly treated by their teachers.
B.They were less attentive in online courses.
C.They probably had natural learning abilities.
D.They were overvalued in conventional classes.
( )35.What can be learned about the halo effect
A.It relieves appearance anxiety.
B.It leads to inaccurate judgements.
C.It causes trust crisis among people.
D.It intensifies workplace competition.

Jackie was searching for her library book in her room. Outside her house stood her friend Sasha waiting for her to go to the library. But the book was missing.
Jackie then ran into her sister’s bedroom. “Have you seen my library book Last week my book was bitten by your cat. The week before that, you dropped my book in the park,” Jackie asked angrily. Her sister shook her head. Despite her efforts, Jackie found no traces of the book there.
“What’s taking you so long, Jackie ” Mum’s voice rang through the house. “I need to find my library book. It has a red cover. It’s due (到期) today. If I have lost the library book, I am not allowed to check out any books for a whole month,” Jackie sighed, walking down the stairs. She nearly ran into her mum, who was carrying a heavy laundry (待洗衣物) basket.
“Good luck with that book. The library closes in twenty minutes.” Mum stopped to grab Jackie’s clothes from the railing and wrinkled her nose. “I’m putting these in the laundry,” said Mum, disappearing down the basement stairs.
Jackie ran around the house, looking under the sofa, in the fridge, and behind the piano. However, the book was nowhere to be found. Where was that library book The thought of not being able to get into the world of stories and knowledge for a whole month made her feel very sad. Jackie sank into the living room sofa, her mind racing with thoughts of the result she would soon face.
Just then Mum came into the living room and suddenly said, “Have you searched all the places You need to think carefully and see if you’ve missed anything ” “I’ve searched everywhere I can think of, but I still haven’t found it,” Jackie almost cried. “I looked for you in your painting room in the backyard last night where you were practising your painting. I seemed to see a red thing. Maybe it was in the painting room,” Mum added.
