When I made a decision to quit my full-time employment, I never thought that I could get involved in an increasing global trend. I had to leave relatively high-profile position for an unexpected move that hurt my pride and prevented me from getting promoted. Yet, I excused my departure by saying "I wanted to spend more time with my family".
Curiously, after around two and a half years, my experience in what the Americans refer to as "downshifting" has turned my excuse into an absolute reality. I have been transformed from a passionate advocate of Linda Kelsey’s "having it all" concept, which she has been promoting for the past seven years in the pages of She magazine, into a woman who is content to accept a little bit of everything.
I have discovered that abandoning the idea of "juggling your life" and adopting the alternative strategy of "downshifting" has benefits that go far beyond financial success and social status. Nothing could convince me to go back to the lifestyle Kelsey used to promote and which I had previously enjoyed: 12-hour workdays, tight deadlines, the terrifying pressure of office politics and the demand of being a parent on "quality time".
After the wide spread layoffs(裁员) brought on by cost-cutting in the late 1980s, America started to move toward a simpler, less materialistic way of life as a response to the economic downturn. In America, simplifying one’s life is frequently done for financial reasons, but in Britain, at least among the middle class I know, we have different motivations for doing so.
For the women of my generation who were encouraged to keep juggling, downshifting is not so much a search for a mythical(虚无的) good life---growing your own organic vegetables, and risking turning into one---as a personal recognition of your limitations.
Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 1
The writer didn’t take pride in her original job.
Full-time employment is a new international trend.
The writer was forced to resign due to an external factor.
The writer was eager to spend more time with her family.
What do we know about downshifting according to the text
The writer abandoned her high social status for downshifting.
Downshifting allowed the writer to make her dream come true.
The writer changed her way of thinking through downshifting.
The writer accepted the concept of She magazine because of downshifting.
What does the underlined phrase "Juggling one's life" in Paragraph 3 mean
Setting for a bit of everything.
Choosing to live a simple life.
Adopting a busy and stressful lifestyle.
Staying away from a materialistic way of life.
What does the writer intend to tell us
It is never too late to pursue your dream.
Downshifting results in a more satisfactory and simpler life.
There is a difference between the American and British cultures.
People should adopt downshifting search for mythical experiences.
C
We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world of unfamiliar styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new sounds can enrich people of all ages. However, most of the time, it doesn't. Our willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music declines with age.
Academics have coined the term "open-earedness" to describe this phenomenon. Until around the age of 11, children are generally happy to engage with unfamiliar music. Early adolescence sees a reduction in open-earedness, but is accompanied by an intense increase in interest in music more generally. Open-earedness increases slightly during young adulthood, and then declines as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these changing behaviors. It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 20% of our waking time during adolescence, to 13% in adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation for age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumes that responsibility-burdened adults may have less free time at their disposal(自由支配) to explore their musical interests than younger people.
Some interpret the observed decline in music engagement in terms of psychosocial maturation. Adolescents use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles. Adults have developed personalities and established social groups. As such, drivers to engage with new music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn't use a person's age to predict if their musical taste will stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use music at different stages of our lives. Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they are listening to. Adults who use music as motivation or accompaniment for activities such as exercise or household chores may be less conscious of the extent to which they actually do listen to new music.
What does the term "open-earedness" refer to in the passage
The ability to play music.
The willingness to explore new music.
The interest in music during adolescence.
The significance of music in daily life.
According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we age
It remains consistent throughout life.
It increases from childhood to adulthood.
It peaks during adolescence and then decreases.
It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as people age
An increase in hearing sharpness.
Less spare time due to responsibilities.
An intense decrease in interest in music.
Changes in personality and social groups.
Which of the following is the best title for the passage
Music consumption: A Lifelong Journey.
Factors Influencing Music Engagement in Adults.
Adolescents and Music: Identity and Exploration.
Decline of Open-Earedness: Age Affects Music Exploration.
D
In 2018, the Czech government proposed a project to create a dam on a river southwest of Prague to revive(恢复) the local ecosystem and protect the species that inhabit the river. However, bureaucracy(官僚主义) held back the project. But a group of beavers(河狸), who do not care about paperwork, got to work. That is, they simply used stones, wood and mud to build a dam on the river. Because there were no labor or material costs, the beavers have saved the Czech government $1.2million USD.
These ecosystem engineers build dams with three simple materials: wood, mud and stones. They place stones at the base of the dams and then add tree trunks and branches. The mud acts as cement(水泥) and settles the construction. These natural dams are so well built that they can last for many years, allowing the surrounding ecosystem to flourish.
Some people consider these animals to be annoying, as they bite on trees and can change the environment quickly. However, here are a few ways they benefit the environment. Firstly, Beaver dams encourage plant growth and peat formation(泥炭的形成), which trap carbon, preventing it from being released into the air. Secondly, Beaver dams can filter water almost twice as efficiently as human-built treatment plants. Besides, Beaver dams help to control runoff from heavy rain, thus reducing the risk of flash flooding. And as you might expect, a moist area is less likely to burn. So, beaver dams can also help limit forest fires.
Hunting nearly drove this species to extinction. But thanks to recent conservation efforts, beavers have been successfully reintroduced to several areas in Europe, including the
Czech Republic. Gerhard Schwab, a beaver expert for the Federal Nature Conservation Association, returned delighted from a field study of beaver habitats and enthusiastically announced the discovery of a valley in Belgium filled with newly formed ponds and streams. This is a clear example of the beaver's ability to transform its environment. It seems that we still have a lot to learn from these natural engineers!
How do the beavers build their dam
By relying only on costly cement.
By combining materials from nature.
By following human engineering plans.
By using modern construction equipment.
What environmental benefit do beavers bring about
Controlling rainfall.
Increasing fish species.
Reducing forest fire risks.
Releasing carbon into the air.
Which factor contributes to beavers' reintroduction
The transformation of ecosystem.
The disappearance of human dams.
The construction of dams across Europe.
The conservation efforts to protect them.
What is the article mainly about
Beavers are excellent ecosystem engineers.
Animals can revive rivers through their labor.
Beavers saved the Czech government one million.
Natural dams are more cost-efficient than human dams.
When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it's not what the world takes away from you that counts; it's what you do with what you have left. 36.
Pain is part of growing.
That's a good thing because we often won't move unless life forces us to. When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose. Remember that there are two kinds of pain: pain that hurts and pain that changes you. When you roll with life, instead of resisting it, both kinds help you grow.
Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light --- you are
reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won't. Nothing lasts forever.
Complaining changes nothing.
Those who complain the most, accomplish the least. 39. It's not over if you've lost; it's over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don't let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.
The best thing you can do is to keep going.
Don't be afraid to get back up to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don't let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life's best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. 40.
Everything in life is temporary.
And even if you fall short, keep going.
Your scars are symbols of your strength.
Here are a few tips to inspire you when you need it most.
Sometimes life closes doors because it's time to move forward.
When you feel like quitting, remember that sometimes things can be right eventually.
It's better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed.

When I was a kid, my parents and I lived near the forest. They often told me that our family was a team that needed to work together for the household to function smoothly. There was always an abundance of work to do ——cooking, cleaning, and walking dogs. I Volunteered to walk our dog, Max, who had been adopted one month before. I never dared let this giant dog off the lead(牵狗绳), just in case he took off.
One morning, we were walking along in the forest when Max started pulling on the lead.
At first, I was able to hold on despite the wet ground from a recent shower. But the more I tried to stop him pulling, the more it turned into a tug of war. And thanks to the slippery ground, I lost.
Pulling his lead, Max shot off like a bullet, leaving me screaming behind. I chased him but lost my footing and fell face-first into some mud. I stumbled(踉跄) to my feet, but looking ahead, I found him running back towards me. I thought he was going to stop and give me his "sorry" look. But instead, the dog shot past me and returned after a while.
As soon as we got home, my mother immediately attended to Max with a warm towel and a doggy treat. I thought seeing me stumbling and covered in mud, I would also get a warm cup of tea and a motherly kiss. Instead, I got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.
I felt frustrated. It wasn't fair that she didn't understand how difficult it was to control Max. I fought back, "stop lecturing me! Why is everything my fault " With these words, I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door shut.
In the evening, I heard my mother call Max and take him out. It wasn't long before I heard my mother screaming and the door opening again.

A。 根据 BottleRock 部分“Initially, BottleRock was created to combine Napa Valley’s culinary offerings with live music.(最初,BottleRock 的创立是为了将纳帕谷的美食与现场音乐相结合)”和 Outside Lands 部分“Outside Lands is also famous for highlighting San Francisco’s vibrant culinary scene, with food being a key festival feature.(Outside Lands 也以突出旧金ft充满活力的美食场景而闻名,美食是该音乐节的一大特色)”可知,BottleRock 和 Outside Lands 的共同点在于两者都将音乐与食物结合在一起。
24-27 CCCB
根据第一段中的“I had to leave my relatively high-profile position for an unexpected move that hurt my pride and prevented me from getting promoted."可知,因为一个意 想不到的举动伤害了作者的自尊心并阻止作者晋升,所以作者不得不离开相对高调的职位。由此可推知,由于外部因素,作者被迫辞职。
C。推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I have been transformed from a passionate advocate of Linda Kelsey's ‘have it all' concept, which she has been promoting for the past seven years in the pages of She magazine, into a woman who is content to accept a little bit of everything."可知,通过“职业降档”,作者已经从“拥有一切”理念的热情倡导者变成了一个满足于每样接受一点点的女人。由此可推知,通过“职业降档”作者的思考方式发生了变化。
C。词义猜测题。根据画线短语下文“Nothing could convince me to go back to the lifestyle Kelsey used to promote and which I had previously enjoyed:12hour workdays, tight deadlines, the terrifying pressure of office politics, and the demand of being a parent on ‘quality
time’.”可知,作者以前的生活方式是繁忙的、有压力的;结合画线短语所在句子“I have discovered that abandoning the idea of‘juggling your life’and adopting the alternative strategy of ‘downshifting' has benefits that go far beyond financial success and social status.”
B。推理判断题根据第三段中的“I have discovered that abandoning the idea of ‘juggling your life’and adopting the alternative strategy of‘downshifting' has benefits that go far beyond financial success and social status.”和最后一段中的“For the women of my generation who were encouraged to keep juggling, downshifting is not so much a search for a mythical(虚无的)good life--- growing your own organic vegetables, and risking turning into one as a personal recognition of your limitations.”
根据第一段中的“Our willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music declines with age."及第二段第一句“Academics have coined the term“open-earedness to describe this phenomenon.”可知,学术界用“听觉开放性”来形容接触陌生音乐、探索陌生音乐的意愿。
C。细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 2o% of our waking time during adolescence, to 13% in adulthood.”
根据第四段中的“One explanation for age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumes that responsibility-burdened adults may have less free time at their disposal(自由支配)to explore their musical interests than younger people.”
根据第二段“These ecosystem engineers build dams with three simple materials: wood, mud and stones.(这些生态系统工程师用三种简单的材料建造水坝:木头、泥土和石头。)”
根据第三段“And as you might expect, a moist area is less likely to burn. So, beaver dams can also help limit forest fires。(正如你所料,潮湿的地区不太可能着火。因此,河狸水坝也有助于限制森林火灾。)”可知,河狸水坝可以减少森林火灾风险。故选 C。
D。 细节理解题。根据第四段“But thanks to recent conservation efforts, beavers have been successfully reintroduced to several areas in Europe, including the Czech Republic.(但由于最近的保护工作,河狸已成功重新引入欧洲的几个地区,包括捷克共和国。)”
A。 根据第二段“These ecosystem engineers build dams with three simple materials: wood, mud and stones.(这些生态系统工程师用三种简单的材料建造水坝:木头、泥土和石头。)”和最后一段“It seems that we still have a lot to learn from these natural engineers.(看来我们还需要从这些自然工程师身上学到很多东西。)” 故选 A。

I walked out of my room. Not surprisingly, they were both covered in mud. It was evident that
Max had led my mother on another wild chase through the forest. My frustration melted away as I saw my mother's apologetic expression. “Sweetheart," my mom said softly," I'm sorry for scolding you earlier.” After a quick shower, she then shared her own adventure with Max and how he also managed to escape from her grasp, when I served her a warm cup of tea. It seemed we were both at our wit's end with this dog.
Dad stepped in, suggesting that we work together to train Max. We spent the next few days teaching Max basic commands like “sit”“stay”and “come back”. It wasn’t easy, but gradually,
Max started responding better to us. The instant we tried to stop him pulling, he sat down with eyes looking intently at us. In the process, not only did Max become more obedient, but our family also grew closer. We realized that every member of our team played an important role, and we needed to support each other to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Text 10
Hey, there. I just got back from the wildest adventure ever. No, not a roller coaster ride, but something way cooler. I was at the local zoo, and let me tell you, those animals are the real stars. You know, I always thought the lions were just big, lazy cats who sleep all day. But today I saw one pacing back and forth, looking like he was planning to take over the world. And those monkeys, forget it. They were more energetic than a bunch of kids on a sugar high. One of them even threw a banana at me, classic. But the best part was the penguin exhibit. These little guys are like nature's comedians. They walk around like they have invisible suits on, and when they slide on the ice, it's like watching a ballet, a clumsy, funny ballet. I swear one of them smiled at me. I mean, who needs TikTok when you've got these guys entertaining you for free Next time I'm bringing popcorn, maybe they'll trade me for some fish.
