Extremely long books are known as "doorstoppers"due to their weight. With the rise of
self-publishing,it's impossible to list every new long book. This list may not be complete,
but it includes three of the longest English novels.
Clarissa by Samuel Richardson
It's generally considered one of the longest English books with over 950,000 words.
Published in 1747 and 1748,it consists of letters written by a fictional young woman named
Clarissa Harlowe and various other characters.Clarissa often appears on lists of the best
novels in history, although Britannica calls it a book that is more talked about than read. And
with about 1,500 pages, depending on the edition ()it's easy to see why!
Sironia,Texas by Madison Cooper
With around 840,000 words,it's not surprising that it took the author 11 years to write
this book before its release in 1952.Divided into two volumes ()the story takes place in
the town of Sironia, which is believed to be based on Cooper's home city of Waco,Texas and
the real people who lived there in the first two decades of the 20th century.Although it was a
bestseller for 11 weeks, some said this book was famous for its length and not its content.
Poor Fellow My Country by Xavier Herbert
Published in 1975,this is a story of three persons who are not accepted by other people,
in the north of Australia. It won an award on its release, and was translated into Japanese
three years later. And unlike the two previous books on this list,Herbert's was published as
one volume with 850,000 words and more than 1,400 pages!
21.What is a feature of Clarissa
A.It includes fictional letters.
B.It's based on real events.
C.It consists of three volumes.
D.It's about three abandoned men.
22.Who wrote a book based on his own hometown
A.Clarissa Harlowe.
B.Samuel Richardson.
C.Madison Cooper.
D.Xavier Herbert.
