In a hungry world, rice is a staple food and China is the world’s largest producer. Rice is also grown in many other Asian countries, and in some European countries like Italy. In the rice-growing world, the Chinese scientist, Yuan Longping, was a leading figure.
Yuan Longping was born and brought up in China. As a boy he was educated in many schools and was given the nickname, “the student who asks questions”.
From an early age, he was interested in plants. He studied agriculture in college and as a young teacher he began experiments in crop breeding (培育). He thought that the key to feeding people was to have more rice and to produce it more quickly. He thought there was only one way to do this—by crossing different species of rice plant, and then he could produce a new plant which could give a higher yield than either of the original plants.
Firstly, Yuan Longping experimented with different types of rice. The results of his experiments were published in China in 1966. Then he began his search for a special type of rice plant. It had to be male. It had to be sterile (不育的). Finally, in 1970 a naturally sterile male rice plant was discovered. This was the breakthrough. Researchers were brought in from all over China to develop the new system. The research was supported by the government.
As a result of Yuan Longping’s discoveries, Chinese rice production rose by 47.5 percent in the 1990s. There were other advantages too. Fifty thousand square kilometres of rice fields were converted (转变,转化) to growing vegetables and other cash crops. Following this, Yuan Longping’s rice was exported to other countries, such as Pakistan and the Philippines.

Football star Jason Brown retired abruptly from the NFL (美国国家橄榄球大联盟) in 2012 in order to deal with something bigger than anything he’d faced on a football field:sweet potatoes.
Brown, then 29,moved with his wife,Tay,and their children from Missouri, where he’d played with the St Louis Rams, back home to North Carolina, where he bought 1,000 acres in Louisburg. Overnight,he went from a football star to a family farmer. “For most people,it doesn’t make sense—why would you leave an awesome NFL career ” he says.
But Brown wasn’t going to become just any farmer. He would give away nearly everything he grew. “I didn’t feel I was just supposed to use my millions to buy food and donate it. I had to be out there doing the work and leading the way,” he says.
This radical step came to him one day when he was struck by a feeling that he had a purpose beyond sports. “Farming chose me;it was my calling in life,” he says.
Only one problem:Jason didn’t know the first thing about farming. So he did what all beginners do today—watched videos on the Internet. Then he partnered with another local farmer that helped him plant fields of sweet potatoes. He named his land First Fruits Farm.
In the early fall of 2014,the first harvest was ready. Fifty pickup trucks arrived at the farm and loaded up 120,000 pounds to distribute locally. In 2015, First Fruits Farm expanded its sweet potato donations to food banks across eastern North Carolina.
Jason uses his unusual story to show local youth what it takes to grow food from start to finish. “They get food that doesn’t just magically appear in the grocery store or restaurants,” he says.
( )1.What did most people think of Brown’s decision to retire from the NFL
A.They weren’t satisfied with it.
B.They couldn’t understand it.
C.They were worried about it.
D.They disapproved of it.
( )2.What does the underlined word “radical” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Easy. B.Slow.
C.Great. D.Careful.
( )3.How did Brown learn to grow food
A.From books.
B.From the Internet.
C.By practising on a local farm.
D.By attending beginner training classes.
( )4.Which of the following can best describe Brown
A.Brave and generous .
B.Proud and determined.
C.Ambitious and sensitive.
D.Considerate and optimistic.
●Ⅴ 阅读七选五
Perseverance isn’t easy. But before you blame your lack of willpower, consider this: building mental strength is similar to building physical strength. In just a few minutes each day, you can train your brain to think differently, manage your emotions, and behave productively. 1.
2. Think about three things you are grateful for in your life. It could be as simple as the clean water that you drink. Write in a gratitude journal, list the things you feel grateful for over dinner, or make it a habit to find what you’re thankful for before you go to bed. Over time, being grateful becomes a second nature.
It’s impossible to stay strong when you’re thinking about something that happened last week or horrible things going to happen tomorrow. 3. It’s therefore of great significance to be able to concentrate on the present. With regular practice, you’ll increase the ability to focus .
It can be tempting to wait until you feel ready to make a change. But waiting until you feel good about yourself before you take action could backfire. Instead, when you change your behaviour, your thoughts and your emotions will follow. So when you’re sad, put your shoulders back and smile, and you’ll feel better. 4.
Every day is a chance to develop some mental strength. Simple, short exercises performed over time will help you build mental strength. 5. Feeling sorry for yourself and giving up after your first failure are just a few of the bad habits that could discourage you from building your mental strength.
A.The only time you can make changes is right now.
B.With regular exercise, you’ll build your mental strength.
C.You can stay away from the bad habits by regular training.
D.Mental strength has a lot in common with physical strength.
E.You can physically change your brain by making gratitude a habit.
F.Pay attention to the bad habits that keep you out of mental strength.
G.Always remember feelings of confidence won’t come out of nowhere.
