I was attracted to Spanish and had lived in Spain for many years. When I returned to my home in the UK, I spoke less Spanish as a result. Although these things were mostly unrelated, they were connected. I didn’t realize at the time, but speaking Spanish was actually a way to take care of myself. I was trapped by anxious thoughts, and finally, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD (强迫症). When my OCD worsened, I often struggled with my thoughts.
Breaking the cycle of repetitive thoughts on a good day is impossibly hard. On a bad day, it’s simply not possible. It’s like my mind is trying to do too many things at once. This makes recovery challenging since it’s hard to find something that truly catches my attention and pulls me from my worrying thoughts.
One day, soon after my diagnosis, I met a Colombian friend at a supermarket. We talked while waiting in line. During our conversation, I noticed something amazing: I was so focused on him that I wasn’t thinking about anything else. This made me realize why I have always loved languages. When I speak Spanish, I feel happier and more relaxed, almost as if I am communicating in my native language.
Recognizing the connection between speaking Spanish and finding mental (精神的) peace felt like discovering a superpower. If I can’t find someone to speak Spanish with, I listen to English songs and translate them in my mind, which helps me relax. I often watch Spanish movies and listen to my favorite Spanish music. This helps me keep my concern at a manageable level.
It’s easy to list the most obvious advantages of learning languages. You’ll be able to communicate when travelling abroad, and you’ll build friendships. But, for me, Spanish has always been about feeling good more than anything else. And that’s what truly matters.
24.What happened to the author when he returned to the UK
A.He lost his home. B.He suffered from worry.
C.He forgot the past. D.He became relaxed.
25.How did the conversation with a Colombian friend affect the author
A.He felt quite lonely. B.He started learning English.
C.He found inner peace. D.He disliked going shopping.
26.Why does the author listen to Spanish music
A.It improves his mental health. B.It helps him create songs.
C.It makes his daily life busy. D.It pushes him to do a better job.
27.What does the author think of learning Spanish
A.It is helpful. B.It is difficult.
C.It is relaxing. D.It is annoying.
Southern California’s firefighters worked tirelessly on Saturday to put out a wildfire that has destroyed more than 100 buildings as strong winds calmed down and the weather was expected to stay good for the weekend. Evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings for people in several areas of Ventura County, where the mountain fire held at around 83 square kilometers and 21% of it was under control.
Firefighters were aided by lighter winds, mild temperatures and low humidity (湿度), which let fuels dry out and burn off quickly, according to the National Weather Service. “We had a very successful day on the fire that broke out 3 days ago with the favorable (有利的) weather,” Ventura County Fire Department Battalion Chief Nick Cleary said on Saturday.
“The fire got worse with the arrival of dry, warm and strong northeast Santa Ana winds, forcing thousands of people to evacuate and putting 3,500 buildings in danger around the community of Camarillo. More than100 buildings were destroyed and another 25 damaged,” fire officials said on Saturday after working teams fanned out to check the damage. It was reported that the damage would be at $2.4 million.
Smoky air hung over the area and was expected to stay there for several days. Weather conditions would remain favorable on Sunday and Monday with low temperatures and an onshore light wind. Another round of northeast winds was expected on Tuesday, but humidity was expected to rise and winds were not expected to get as high as those that fanned the fire.
The area northwest of Los Angeles has seen some of California’s most destructive fires over the years. The mountain fire burgeoned from less than 1.2 square kilometers to more than 41 square kilometers in little more than five hours on Wednesday, with winds topping 98 kph. We all experience the presence of wild animals in our daily lives, whether it is the song of a garden bird or the fish on our plate. It’s important to consider the key role that the surprising diversity (多样性) of wild animals plays in our own survival. From the powerful whale to the small dung beetle, wild animals are all important pieces that make up life on the earth.
Wildlife helps most trees grow by spreading seeds (种子), and they also help many of our food plants. They keep our forests strong, so they can hold a lot of carbon. A large number of animals move nutrients (养分) around in nature, which is good for industries like fisheries, and help prevent tipping points in places like the Amazon. Small animals underground, like soil helpers, make food grow better and stop flooding.
We risk our own survival if we lose these wild species. And it is not just important that they exis t — their diversity is especially important. We need wildlife to interact with other animals and their habitats for effective ecological benefits.
Understanding the importance of wild animal species makes much sense. The 2024 Living Planet Report showed a 73% average drop in wild vertebrate species since 1970. The Nature’s Technicians report makes it clear why these falls are disastrous not only for wildlife but also for people.
These two reports arrived at just the right moment. Countries will have an important talk soon about how to stop and fix the damage to nature, discussing what each country should do and what help is needed worldwide, under the Convention on Biological Diversity. What more of a wake-up call do we need than understanding that the fall in wild animals is more serious than expected and that such results could threaten our food systems and economies
Let’s ensure that this international conference is remembered as the important moment when we come together for a better planet — for wildlife and people alike.
32.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The important role of wildlife. B.The number of diverse species.
C.The practical way to save animals. D.The damage caused by flooding.
33.Why does the author mention the two reports in the text
A.To recommend popular magazines.
B.To compare the difference between plants and animals.
C.To express his views on the diversity of wildlife.
D.To stress the urgency of protecting wildlife.
34.What does the author expect us to do
A.Reduce the threat to our food systems.
B.Get into important talks as often as we can.
C.Share what we have learned with our friends.
D.Build a healthy earth that supports animals and humans.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Protecting our food systems makes a difference
B.Save wild species, save ourselves
C.Leave more spaces, save more wildlife
D.Boosting the wild species matters a lot
We all understand how important it is to keep a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and rest. 36 The role that sports play in our physical health is equally important and cannot be overlooked. That’s why we’ve gathered some necessary tips to help you make the most of sports for your physical health.
37 Different sports work on different aspects of your body. For example, running makes your heart stronger and increases lung capacity (肺活量). Swimming, on the other hand, not only promotes your overall strength but also exercises muscle groups. By diversifying your sports activities, you can ensure that all parts of your body get the workout they need.
Avoid excessive (过度的) and improper exercise that might cause harm. If you are new to a particular sport, start slowly and build up your intensity (强度) step by step. 38 If you feel excessive pain or tiredness in your body during exercise, it’s time to take a break or change your exercise.
Use proper sports equipment in relation to the sport you’re doing. 39 In running, a good pair of running shoes with proper support is necessary to protect your feet and joints from excessive impact. When cycling, a well-fitted helmet can safeguard your head in case of accidents.

All my life, I had been very confident about my choices and dreams. I never thought this would happen out of nowhere. After taking one of the entrance tests for Doctor of Medicine,I thought I had failed. But when the result came, I saw my name on the list. I was overjoyed. I still remember how happy my parents and uncle were. We received many congratulations, which made the moment unforgettable.
The admission period came, and my rank was not high enough for a free college. In addition, the real challenge was the financial aspect I had to accept the reality of the high costs for higher education. After careful thinking, I asked my father not to pay any money for my college education, because I thought it might be better to struggle for another year to secure a free spot than to see my family struggle financially. Indeed, I had mixed feelings then. I was happy that at least I was on the list, but at the same time, I was sad that I would miss the chance to go to college this year.
“Son, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Do you really want to give up this chance ” my father said seriously. I looked into his eyes, seeing the struggle within him. “I don’t want to, but I don’t want you to pay so much money, Dad. I can wait and try again next year,” I said. He added softly but firmly, “No, we’ll find a way, somehow.”
I remembered my parents’ hard work. They left early and returned late, supporting the whole family. Their hard work inspired me. I didn’t want them to worry about my tuition (学费). Life’s challenges made me stronger. I believed I could achieve my goal with effort.

She traveled to Germany to receive nursing training and upon returning to England, she founded a nursing home for women. In 1854, during a war, Florence, along with thirty-eight nurses, went to the front hospitals. The conditions they met were terrible. The officers in charge refused to receive assistance from women, but the courageous nurses insisted in their work. After the war, Queen Victoria honored Florence for her services. She used the funds she raised to found the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in London. Additionally, she wrote a book on public health, which was published in many countries.

根据第一段“Southern California’s firefighters worked tirelessly on Saturday to put out a wildfire that has destroyed more than 100 buildings as strong winds calmed down and the weather was expected to stay good for the weekend.(周六,南加州的消防队员不知疲倦地扑灭了一场野火,这场野火已经摧毁了100多座建筑,强风逐渐平息,预计周末天气将保持良好)”以及第二段““We had a very successful day on the fire that broke out 3 days ago with the favorable (有利的) weather,” Ventura County Fire Department Battalion Chief Nick Cleary said on Saturday.(文图拉县消防部门营长尼克·克利里周六表示:“我们在3天前爆发的大火中度过了非常成功的一天,天气很好。”)”
根据划线词后文“from less than 1.2 square kilometers to more than 41 square kilometers in little more than five hours(在5个多小时内从不足1.2平方公里扩大到超过41平方公里)”可知,五个多小时的时间里,火灾面积从不到1.2平方公里猛增到41平方公里以上。
根据第一段“Southern California’s firefighters worked tirelessly on Saturday to put out a wildfire that has destroyed more than 100 buildings as strong winds calmed down and the weather was expected to stay good for the weekend.(周六,南加州的消防队员不知疲倦地扑灭了一场野火,这场野火已经摧毁了100多座建筑,强风逐渐平息,预计周末天气将保持良好)”结合下文对火势控制、起火时间、影响范围等的具体介绍推知,本文属于新闻报道。故选A。

根据第二段“Wildlife helps most trees grow by spreading seeds(种子), and they also help many of our food plants. They keep our forests strong, so they can hold a lot of carbon. A large number of animals move nutrients(养分) around in nature, which is good for industries like fisheries, and help prevent tipping points in places like the Amazon. Small animals underground, like soil helpers, make food grow better and stop flooding(野生动物通过传播种子帮助大多数树木生长,它们也帮助我们的许多食用植物。
根据第四段“The 2024 Living Planet Report showed a 73% average drop in wild vertebrate species since 1970. The Nature’s Technicians report makes it clear why these falls are disastrous not only for wildlife but also for people(《2024年地球生命力报告》显示,自1970年以来,野生脊椎动物物种平均减少了73%。《自然的技术员》报告清楚地说明了这些减少为什么不仅对野生动物而且是对人类都是灾难性的)”以及第五段“What more of a wake - up call do we need than understanding that the fall in wild animals is more serious than expected and that such results could threaten our food systems and economies ( 我们还需要更响亮的警钟吗?认识到野生动物数量的减少比预期更为严重,以及这样的结果可能会威胁到我们的食物系统和经济,这已经足够令人警觉了)”可知,这两份报告显示了自1970年以来野生脊椎动物物种数量的大幅下降,这不仅对野生动物是灾难性的,对人类也是如此,这种情况会威胁到我们的食物系统和经济,作者提及这两份报告是为了强调保护野生动物的紧迫性,故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Let’s ensure that this international conference is remembered as the important moment when we come together for a better planet — for wildlife and people alike.(让我们确保这次国际会议被铭记为我们为了一个更美好的星球——为了野生动物和人类——而走到一起的重要时刻。)”
根据第一段“We all experience the presence of wild animals in our daily lives, whether it is the song of a garden bird or the fish on our plate. It’s important to consider the key role that the surprising diversity(多样性) of wild animals plays in our own survival. From the powerful whale to the small dung beetle, wild animals are all important pieces that make up life on the earth(我们在日常生活中都能感受到野生动物的存在,无论是花园里鸟儿的歌声,还是我们盘中的鱼肉。考虑到丰富多彩(多样性)的野生动物在我们自身生存中所起的关键作用是很重要的。从强大的鲸鱼到小小的粪金龟,野生动物都是构成地球上生命的重要部分)”、第五段“What more of a wake - up call do we need than understanding that the fall in wild animals is more serious than expected and that such results could threaten our food systems and economies ( 我们还需要更响亮的警钟吗?

Insightful Red Educational Tour Enlightens Students
Last Saturday, our school organized a Red Educational Tour, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of China’s revolutionary history.
We visited the Revolutionary Museum, where we learned about the struggles and victories of our motherland. The exhibits were a vivid picture of the past, making history come alive. We also had a chance to walk through an old revolutionary base, which helped us understand the lives of the Red Army soldiers better. The tour was not just about sightseeing; it was a profound learning experience, which has inspired me to study history more seriously and apply the lessons of the past to my future actions.
In conclusion, the Red Educational Tour was a success, and I look forward to more such enlightening experiences.

However, I was about to give up hope when my uncle came. He entered with a determined look, holding an envelope. “I’ve managed to secure a sum of money for you,” he announced. Moved by my uncle’s gesture, my father said, “Your uncle and I will do whatever it takes to see you through this. Your education is important, and we won’t let anything stand in your way.” I felt a sense of gratitude and relief. It was as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I could see a path forward to my college life.
With the timely support of my family, I finally received the admission call. “This is your chance,” my father said, handing me the phone. I accepted the offer, knowing I carried the support of my family. It was a victory not just for me, but for the strength of our bond. After hanging up, I looked around at my family. They let out a sigh of relief. “We did it,” my uncle said proudly. Then I knew that no matter what challenges life threw at us, we would overcome them, united by the unbreakable ties of family and the power of love.
