Have you ever wanted to grow some vegetables at home Spinach (菠菜) is a great choice. It grows
easily throughout the year.
When should you plant spinach
Spinach can grow in temperatures as low as -7℃, but that's not good for its growth. Spinach grows
best in temperatures between 15℃ and 27℃. Temperatures above 29℃ can influence its taste.
Where should you grow spinach
* Pot size: A pot of 15 to 20 cm deep would be the best. Depending on your space, it can be as wide
as you want.
* Earth: For growing spinach in pots, use a mix rich in nutrients (营养). Make sure it won't take in
water easily.
* Space: Give each spinach plant 7 cm of space. If you want large leaves, give each plant a little
more space.
* Position: If you are growing spinach in fall and winter, keep the plants in a sunny place. Make sure
they receive at least four hours of direct sunlight every day. For spring and summer planting, put your
plants in a place without much sunlight, especially in the afternoon.
_________
*Watering: Keep the earth not too wet. Avoid watering the leaves.
* Fertilizing (施肥 ): To grow healthy spinach, you need to use a slow-release fertilizer. It will
provide nutrients slowly.
When can you harvest (收获)
Spinach grows quickly. You can harvest when the plant has at least five healthy leaves (7-10 cm in
length), usually within one month.

My mother loved strawberry milkshakes. I always dropped by to see her and surprise her with her
favorite desserts.
In her later years, she lived in a life-care center because of Alzheimer's Disease (阿尔茨海默症).
One day, I was heartbroken to know that my mom no longer knew I was her son. She would often ask,
“Now, what was your name ” and I would tell her my name and that I was her son. She would smile and
reach for my hand.
When I realized that my mother's condition was getting worse, I wrote her a letter and told her some
things I had wanted to say for a long time but had been too shy to say. My father told me that she often
spent hours reading and re-reading that letter.
On one of my visits, I stopped by the local shop and bought my mother a strawberry milkshake. She
drank it slowly one bit at a time. After she finished the milkshake, she lay down on the bed for a rest,
remaining awake and satisfied.
Without a word, I pulled a chair close to the bed and she gave my hand a squeeze (挤压)... three
squeezes. They were short, but I knew what she was saying without having to hear any words.
I gave her hand two soft squeezes. She turned her head and gave me a loving smile. She quietly said,
“It's important to have someone who loves you.”
I cried and gave her a warm hug, telling her how much I loved her.
My mother passed away shortly after that. Very few words were spoken that day, but those she spoke
were words of gold. I will always treasure those special moments.

If you hit your head against a tree all day long, you probably wouldn't feel too great and neither
would your brain. Woodpeckers (啄木鸟) do this all the time.
Some animals are man’s best friends. The woodpecker is one of them. The bird helps trees to grow
by eating worms inside the tree trunk (树干). They find worms by hitting the tree trunk. They hit their
heads into trees with a force of 15 mph (24 km/h), 20 times a second! So why don’t they get headaches
The answer is in their brains.
The texture (质地) of a woodpecker’s brain is different from that of humans. Our brain is filled with
cerebral spinal fluid (脑脊液). When we hurt our head, our brain moves around in the fluid. But wood-
-peckers have none of this fluid. This means that when they hit the tree, their brain is less likely to move
around.
Besides, thick muscles and sponge-like bones (海绵状骨头) also help to protect the bird’s brain.
They keep the brain from moving around when the bird is working on a tree trunk.
The fast and strong hitting may also harm the woodpeckers’ eyes. Don’t worry. The birds have a
special trick. They close their thick inner eyelids (眼睑) when hitting the tree. The eyelid acts like a seat
belt and keeps the eyes from getting out of the head, or the speed would tear the eyes.
Scientists even think some of the things they found out about woodpeckers can be used to make
better helmets (头盔).
