At 12, Edison sold newspapers on trains to earn money for his experiments. Later, he worked as a telegraph operator, but he never stopped inventing. In 1876, he built his own laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. People called it “the invention factory” because Edison and his team invented many things there.
Edison’s most famous invention is the practical light bulb. He tested over 1,600 materials for the bulb’s filament (灯丝) before finding the right one. In addition to the light bulb, he invented the phonograph (the first machine to play sound), the motion picture camera, and many other useful things.
Edison once said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety - nine percent perspiration.” He worked over 16 hours a day and believed hard work was the key to success. He died in 1931, but his inventions changed the world forever.

As a scientist, da Vinci studied many fields. He made detailed drawings of human anatomy to learn how the body works. He also studied plants, animals, and the movement of water. His notes and drawings show his curiosity about the world around him.
