Preparing Cities for Robot Cars
The possibility of self﹣driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from materializing in the real world.Well, the future is apparently now.The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self﹣driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self﹣driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services.California,it should be noted, isn't leading the way panies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated.
While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars(and rightfully so),policymakers also should be talking about how self﹣driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放) and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared.
Do we want to copy — or even worsen — the traffic of today with driverless cars?Imagine a future where most adults own individual self﹣driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking.Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self﹣driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport — an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride﹣hailing(叫车) services.
A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol﹣powered private cars worldwide with electric, self﹣driving and shared systems could reduce carbon emissions from transportation 80% and cut the cost of transportation infrastructure(基础设施)and operations 40% by 2050.Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride﹣hailing services, considering the cost of self﹣driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues(责任与维护问题).But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people become comfortable with the technology.
Policymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless vehicles doesn't extend the worst aspects of the car﹣controlled transportation system we have today. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.
(1)According to the author, attention should be paid to how driverless cars can .
A.help deal with transportation﹣related problems
B.provide better services to customers
C.cause damage to our environment
D.make some people lose jobs
(2)As for driverless cars, what is the author's major concern?
A.Safety.
B.Side effects.
C.Affordability.
D.Management.
(3)What does the underlined word "fielded" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Employed.
B.Replaced.
C.Shared.
D.Reduced.
(4)What is the author's attitude to the future of self﹣driving cars?
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Disapproving.
D.Sympathetic.
4.If you've ever been on a fishing boat, you've probably seen crowds of birds following it,hoping to catch a snack. Now scientists use those birds' behavior to track illegal fishing boats.
Researchers attached data loggers to the backs of 169 albatrosses(信天翁)in Indian oceans.Weighing only 42 grams, the devices included a GPS,which enabled them to detect the presence and intensity of radar signals emitted by boats. That information was then sent by satellite,so the researchers could track the location of the birds—and thus the radar emitting boats—in real time.
The scientists then cross checked that data against the known locations of boats, collected from a system boats use to declare themselves, called the Automatic Identification System(AIS).And noticeable differences appeared frequently.
More than a third of the times the bird "loggers" detected radar signals, and therefore a boat, but no such boat appeared in the official log—meaning that the vehicles had likely switched off their AIS—something that probably happens in illegal fishing operations.
The work suggests birds could be an effective boat monitoring tool as long as illegal fishing operations don't target the birds.
Fortunately, such a task would be difficult.Around fishing boats, you can find hundreds of birds at any one time that are flying around. And the birds with loggers are not marked in anyway. So it's not really possible for fishermen to pick out a specific bird.
But what concerns researchers is that albatrosses often get caught by some fishing boats.Though regulations have been established to protect against that happening—with success—illegal boats don't necessarily obey.So scientists might be underestimating the risk posed to albatross populations.
(1)What characteristic of albatrosses do scientists take advantage of in their research?
A.Their feeding patterns.
B.Their sense of direction.
C.Their greedy behaviors.
D.Their habit of following fishing boats.
(2)For what purpose does a boat shut off its AIS?
A.To seek more fishes.
B.To have it mistaken for another.
C.To avoid being detected.
D.To save the trouble of declaring itself.
(3)What does "such a task" in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.Identifying birds with loggers.
B.Monitoring illegal boats.
C.Tracking radar signals automatically.
D.Fishing illegally.
(4)What could be the best title for the text?
A.AIS:an Effective System to Locate Boats
B.Humans Are Good at Discovering Birds' Nature
C.Data Loggers Help Fishermen Get a Good Harvest
D.Scientists Use Birds to Track Illegal Fishing Operations
5.Growing up in America,I enjoyed the convenience of eating the most attractive, well﹣packaged foods of the 20th century, including all the candies we often see near the cash register.During those times I wasn't aware how bad sugar was,and in fact, neither was anyone around me.So I continued to spread jam on my toast and eat ice cream daily.
Strangely enough,I felt that sweet was some sort of wonderful drug which gave me the energy to function properly,to feel good and to perform at my best, all of which seemed necessary for growth. So why should I avoid it?
Years later, huge food companies, like General Mills and Post, began pumping more sugar into their products, and then more and more people appeared with bigger bellies(腹部).It finally came to my awareness that our society was becoming more miserable and unfit. And from what? From sugar!I began to do some research into sugar and what it did exactly to our bodies. To my amazement,I found its damage was just as bad as,if not worse than, what alcohol and cigarettes brought about. You see, when you take in more sugar than you need or burn, your body and brain become over﹣active. This,in effect, causes your cognitive(认知的) abilities to slow down, your mood to get to the extremes, your skin to age faster, your blood to become thicker and your liver and kidneys to be worn out.
But what surprised me most, out of all of these horrible side effects, was that sugar adds extra pounds to your waistline, even if you do exercise regularly. And what I've always wanted, for the past few years,is to remove that extra fat around my belly so that I could finally see my abs(腹肌).
I just didn't know, this whole time, what damage I had been doing to myself and my dreams, but I knew I had to do something I had never done before.
(1)What did the author use to do?
A.He took in much sugar.
B.He learnt to cook foods.
C.He sold ice cream daily.
D.He had candies packaged.
(2)What made the author begin to doubt the benefits of sugar?
A.Sugar was unable to provide necessary energy.
B.More people eating sugary foods became unfit.
C.Some companies avoided adding sugar to foods.
D.Many customers stopped buying sugary products.
(3)What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The author's comments on sugar.
B.The detailed process of the research.
C.The harmful effect of sugar on health.
D.The reasons why there search is done.
(4)What does the author probably decide to do at last?
A.Eat less food.
B.Cut down sugar.
C.Do more exercise.
D.Add extra pounds.

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes,or biological engineering as people call it,is drawing more and more attention now.Discussions about it are increasingly heated around the world.
The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease.Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved;therefore it benefits the economy as well.In addition, the human lifespan (寿命)can be prolonged.
Gene technology can help people to give birth to healthier and cleverer children. Some families have genetic diseases. This means their children will for sure have the familial disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about genetic diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly.Scientists just need to find the wrong gene and correct it,and a healthy child will be born.
Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to create human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning animals such as mice, sheep, and dogs;therefore, these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned and that it would be beyond control, leading to some disastrous consequences. But many believe that cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in a very normal way and they also believe measures will be taken to control gene technology.

【解答】(1)A. While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars(and rightfully so),policymakers also should be talking about how self﹣driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放) and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options.(虽然到目前为止,大部分辩论都集中在无人驾驶汽车的安全性上(这是理所应当的),但政策制定者也应该讨论无人驾驶汽车如何有助于减少交通拥堵、减少排放,并提供更方便、更实惠的出行选择。) 故选A。
(2)D. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated.(不管花多长时间,这项技术都有可能改变我们的交通系统和我们的城市,不管是好是坏,这取决于如何这种转变如何被规范。) The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.(未来的汽车就要来了。
(3)A. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride﹣hailing services, considering the cost of self﹣driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues(责任与维护问题).(鉴于自主驾驶的费用以及责任和维护问题,无人驾驶车几乎可以肯定将会被打车服务使用。) A.Employed被应用;B.Replaced被取代;C.Shared被分享;D.Reduced被减少。故选A。
(4)B. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.(即将到来的技术进步为城市和州提供了发展交通系统的机会,以更经济实惠的方式运送更多的人。 中的 advancement, move more people, and more affordably.
A.Their feeding patterns.
B.Their sense of direction.
C.Their greedy behaviors.
D.Their habit of following fishing boats.
(2)For what purpose does a boat shut off its AIS? C
A.To seek more fishes.
B.To have it mistaken for another.
C.To avoid being detected.
D.To save the trouble of declaring itself.
(3)What does "such a task" in Paragraph 6 refer to? A
A.Identifying birds with loggers.
B.Monitoring illegal boats.
C.Tracking radar signals automatically.
D.Fishing illegally.
(4)What could be the best title for the text? D
A.AIS:an Effective System to Locate Boats
B.Humans Are Good at Discovering Birds' Nature
C.Data Loggers Help Fishermen Get a Good Harvest
D.Scientists Use Birds to Track Illegal Fishing Operations
If you've ever been on a fishing boat, you've probably seen crowds of birds following it,hoping to catch a snack. Now scientists use those birds' behavior to track illegal fishing boats."
根据第四段中"but no such boat appeared in the official log—meaning that the vehicles had likely switched off their AIS—something that probably happens in illegal fishing operations.(官方的观察记录中没有出现这样的船只,这意味着这些船只很可能关闭了它们的自动识别系统(AIS),而这种情况很可能发生在非法捕鱼作业中。)"
(3)A. The work suggests birds could be an effective boat﹣monitoring tool as long as illegal fishing operations don't target the birds.(这项研究表明,只要非法捕鱼活动不以鸟类为目标,鸟类可能是一种有效的船只监控工具。)" And the birds with loggers are not marked in any way.So it's not really possible for fishermen to pick out a specific bird." 故选A项。
(4)D. Now scientists use those birds' behavior to track illegal fishing boats."

(7)without.
(8)will take. 故填will take.
(9)easily.
(10)models.

Gene technology is now a hot topic worldwide. It can help people cure deadly diseases and allow them to live a happier and longer life with better economic conditions.Gene technology also makes it possible for people with genetic diseases to give birth to healthy babies. However, some people are concerned that gene technology will be largely used in human cloning while others don't see it as a problem.
Gene technology also makes it possible for people with genetic diseases to give birth to healthy babies.
