Tipping — the act of giving extra money to service workers — is common in many parts of the world, while in others, it is seen totally unnecessary. Even in countries where tipping is expected, debates arise over the proper amounts. As with any complex topics, opinions differ based on cultural and personal factors. Here is what people from different countries said when asked the question“Do you tip ”
Maeia, Italy: “If I’m at a café and the service is very good, I’ ll leave a small tip — maybe 10 percent. But usually in Italy tipping is not expected. At most restaurants, they already add a service charge to the bill. I like it that way because then I don’t have to calculate it myself!”
Javier, Mexico: “Oh yes, I definitely tip. For me and many others in Mexico, it’s a way of showing respect for hard work. Also, some people — like the people who pack your bags in the grocery store — get no money from their employer. So, if you neglect their tip, they don’t get paid!”
Sophie, France: “I do, but I’m in the minority. In France, a service charge is usually included in the bill, so a tip isn’t necessary. But I used to work in a café, so Ialways leave a little something extra for the server.”
Liam, the US: “Always. In the US, it’s really a must. But it’s also quite expensive. It used to be around 15 to 20 percent, but now it’s much higher because people got used to tipping more during the COVID years. We’re talking 25 to 30 percent in a restaurant. Honestly, I rarely eat out nowadays, because it breaks the bank. I just can’t afford the tip.”
In which countries is tipping not needed for most people
Italy& Mexico. B. Mexico& France.
C. France& Italy. D. Mexico& the US.
In the US, if the bill for a meal is $ 120, what is the minimum tip now

On the first day of school this year, Joseph Riley, the principal (校长) of Pocahontas County High School in West Virginia, dropped by the band classroom and told the 38 students that the school had been unable to find a band teacher after the former teacher left over the summer to take a teaching position at a different school.
“I said that we'd have to get them into other classes,” Riley said. Then he gave the students a second option. If the teens wanted to keep the Warriors band going and teach themselves, the school would support them. Most students decided to take a different class, but ten students took him up on the offer. The guys didn't give up faced with unpleasant situations and they found the courage to keep the band going.
The ten band members elected Hailey Fitzgerald, 17, as band director, and then invited two teachers from the school to serve as advisors. Math teacher Jennifer Nail-Cook agreed to offer support.“They are an impressive bunch of kids,” Nail-Cook said. “We are all very proud of them.” Band students practice the school song every day,and they have learned to work together, Fitzgerald said. They also had to solve a problem when they realized they had too many drummers (鼓手).
The band's latest performance was at their school's Homecoming Day. “When we do our school song, that's
probably everybody's favorite,” said Jadyn Lane, 17. “To see so many people supporting and cheering us on, that's a huge motivator.” Several school alumni (校友) volunteered to join the students in the stands on Homecoming Day. “Our school is the heart of the community,” Riley said. “Everyone is really appreciative of these kids working
together to make sure our school still has a band. It's unbelievable to witness the progress they've made on their own.” Years from now, Fitzgerald said she imagines she’ll look back on her junior year as band director with pride.
“It was never an option for us to quit — we all love it too much,” she said.

“I can’t live without my mobile phone!” is what I often hear people say as they talk about how mobiles have become an essential part of their lives.
The all so common sight of heads bent, eyes staring at mobile screens and fingers busy tapping away repeats itself across major cities around the world. Whenever there is a moment to spare while on the train, taxi or waiting in a queue, people busy themselves with their mobile phones.
Some people believe our unhealthy obsession with mobile phones is destroying how we appreciate the little things in life or miss the moments that matter. The truth is that technology overall should be seen as a tool to improve our lives.
Mobile phones have certainly had a great influence on our lives, but I truly believe it’s for the better.
It’s changed the way we communicate, whether for work or play. We are now less constrained (限制) by time and geographical location. With my mobile phone, I can dial into conference calls while stuck in a traffic jam, or reply to urgent e-mails while on the go. I can send a text message or share photos and videos with friends who
aren’t living in the same country. My phone calendar keeps my life organized, and even Facebook. Twitter, and instant messaging are now accessible from mobile phones!
The mobile revolution isn’t just changing the lives of urbanite (城市居民)like myself. I know of a young
Bangladeshi woman named Shompa Akhter who is crazy about fashion and design. She dreamt about starting her own business and she did just that, opening a shop in Kushtia featuring her own creations. Dealing with suppliers in different towns was a problem for Shompa-purchase orders had to either be hand delivered or mailed out to
suppliers. Shompa also found it tough publicizing (宣传)her business to potential customers outside her town. But once she learnt to operate the mobile phone, she was addicted. The 25-year-old businesswoman now stays in touch easily with her suppliers. Mobile e-mail is a blessing in her life. Who would have thought that mobility could bring
about such enormous change It shouldn’t really be a surprise though.
In the first two paragraphs, the author wants to show .
mobile phones make people communicate less
mobile phones make people’s life more enjoyable
people become addicted to mobile phones in daily life
people’s health is greatly affected by mobile phones
What’s the author’s attitude towards mobile phones
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Uninterested.
How is Paragraph 5 developed
By listing figures. B. By making comparison.
C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By giving examples.
What do we know about Shompa from the passage
She operates a food store. B. She is addicted to Internet surfing.
C. Her mobile phone helped her business a lot. D. Mobile e-mail is still unavailable to her.
D
What’s your opinion on spicy food Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them.
Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research
has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported.
“We have always assumed that liking contributes to intake —— we eat what we are fond of and we like what we consume. But no one has actually directly bothered to relate personality to intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.
But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching
action movies or riding a roller coaster.
In the study, 97 subjects, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they are keen on new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin, the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.
By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.
Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can stand spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.
Which can take the place of the underlined word “loathe” in Paragraph 2
A. dislike. B. seek. C. accept. D. harvest.
What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study
What we eat actually helps develop our personality. B. Males prefer spicy food than females.
C. Those avoiding risks tend to hate spicy food. D. It’s wrong to treat “spicy” as a feeling.
Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study
Because their tongues have become less sensitive. B. Because they are lacking in appetite.
C. Because they want to challenge themselves. D. Because they love the burning feeling.
What’s the main idea of the passage
What to eat mainly depends on personality.
Preference for spicy food relies largely on personality.
Taste has nothing to with one’s experiences.
Different people have different taste.

How to improve long-term memory
There are some things that are easy for us to remember and you notice that you can still recall that information even when you no longer need it. Sometimes it is difficult to remember information. 16 Try the following
steps below to remember information you want to keep in your long-term memory.
Organize information into groups. 17 It is like a supermarket; things of the same kind are put in the
same place.
Connect related information. Relate what you have already known to what you will remember. This is an excellent way for you to keep information in mind as it can make your memory function better when the related information is needed.
18 When you need to remember a piece of information, try relating it to a picture that is easily
remembered. This is how many people remember positions. 19
Repeat. The more you are exposed to something, the easier it is to remember at a later time. 20 Try
using his name at least three times when you first talk to someone. That name will be easier to remember later.
Develop pictures in your mind.
Deal with information effectively.
But there are ways to make it easier.
This is especially good for meeting new people.
They can simply recall that the store is near the bridge.
Write down the information in order, read it and say it aloud at once.
This will help you remember things better and longer if they are grouped.
