三、作答示例
The geometry teacher sensed my depression and offered to let me stay. Putting down her work, she
gently asked me to sit down beside her, acknowledged my perseverance and progress and asked why I was
so down. I explained the situation almost in tears, mentioning my mom’s unrealized dream and my
attempts to learn geometry. Hearing all this, she looked straight into my eyes, and asked seriously “Did you
study as hard as you could in geometry Did you give the exam your best effort ” “Yes,” I replied, “I made
all my efforts.”
After a long silence, the teacher said firmly, “Then you should be proud.” Totally caught by surprise, I
tried to ask why, but failed. Seeing my confusion, she explained “You handled your worst fear, fought until
the end when you signed your name on that final exam and turned it in. This is a personal best, so be proud
of yourself.” This gave me a whole new angle for the matter and my mother also comforted me because she
did see my hard work. From then on, I changed the definition of success—it lies in the trying, not the
winning.

W: Hey, Bryan. Are you excited about performing in the play on Friday night
M: Yeah, but I’m more nervous than excited, though.
W: Really I thought you really liked to perform in plays.
M: I do, but this is my first play in front of the whole school.
W: I know. That means our school lecture hall will be full! Isn’t that a good thing
M: Usually. But what if everyone thinks that the play is bad, or they criticize my acting
W: I’m sure no one will think you did a bad job.
M: Maybe you’re right. There’s nothing to be frightened of.
W: Well, just remember all that matters is that you are happy with your performance.
M: You’re right. Thanks for cheering me up.
Text 9
W: Good evening. May I help you
M: Yes. I have a reservation here tonight, but I have a little problem.

to the bank
W: Of course. There’s a phone on that table there.
M: OK, thank you. Can you still let me check into the hotel without a credit card
W: Well, we don’t normally do that. Did you make your reservation with the same credit card
M: No, I used a different card.
W: OK. Well, if you have two forms of identification, I can use the other credit card number to check you
in.
M: That’s great! I have my passport and my driving license right here.
W: Excellent. I’ll check you in, and you can call the bank from your room if you like.

M: Good morning, everybody. Welcome to Museum of Science and Technology. My name is Greg and
I’ll be your tour guide today. Now, if you’d like to step this way, we’re going to look at this machine over
here. Can anybody guess what this is Yes, this is actually the first photocopy machine. This was one of the
most important inventions in the twentieth century. The magazine Fortune called it the most successful
product ever marketed in America. And this technology is essentially the same technology that is used in
laser printers today! Just think for a moment how often you use a photocopy machine or a laser printer. And
this is Chester Carlson, the inventor of the photocopy machine. He invented the process of
xerography—that’s basically what happens in a photocopy machine—in 1938.
I’m going to tell you a little bit about him, and then we’ll look at how xerography works, okay
Chester Carlson was born in Seattle. His father was sick and couldn’t work, and the family was very poor.
His mother died when he was a teenager. So he had to support his father. He was a good student, and he
was very interested in science.
