For many of the runners, “slow” is a four-letter word. However, in the last year or two, slow running has become “A Thing”, backed not just by wellness experts, but also by a growing number of coaches, amateur runners and exercise scientists, too. The idea is that going slow could be a fast way to enjoy the benefits of exercise.
Slow running is usually defined as a pace at which you can comfortably hold a conversation. It is “zone 2 exercise” in sports science and it’s a physiological (生理学的) sweet spot that can improve and extend your life.
Researchers in Copenhagen made a surprising discovery that the light and moderate joggers had a lower death rate than either the non-runners or the hard runners. What makes the unhurried approach so healthful
“Slow running helps reduce resting blood pressure and promotes a stronger heart,” says Prof Dan Gordon, an exercise physiologist. Besides improving heart strength and pumping capacity, slow running boosts health at the molecular level, fends off metabolic disease by improving your insulin resistance and encourages your body to use fat for energy.
Slow runners also recover faster and are less likely to suffer tiredness or overtraining injuries. They’re more likely to feel good. “There are huge positives for emotional health,” Gordon says. “And then there’s the social aspect — with slow running, you can actually have a conversation!”
Gordon believes promoting slow running might encourage more people to exercise regularly, partly because there’s no performance pressure and partly because you can do it with friends. “If you aim to get people physically fit, doing it in a group is the best way,” Gordon says. “You have that sense of encouragement.”
Researches show even professional runners sometimes take part in slow running to build their aerobic base (有氧基础), enhancing their heart’s ability and enabling them to run farther and faster with less effort.
28.What is mainly talked about slow running in paragraph 2
A.Its popularity. B.Its definition. C.Its importance. D.Its advantage.
29.What do the underlined words in paragraph 4 mean
A.Adapts to. B.Suffers from. C.Fights against. D.Arises from.
30.Why does Gordon think slow running might encourage regular exercise
A.It is convenient for runners to prepare for it.
B.It is less stressful and can be done with friends.
C.It develops the skills in building relationships.
D.It aims to make sure of people’s physical fitness.
31.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Slow running benefits professional runners.
B.Slow running means a long-distance running.
C.Slow running is a relief for exhausted runners.
D.Slow running is suitable for runners of all ages.
Trained rats could help fight against the multi-billion-dollar illegal wildlife trade by using their heightened sense of smell to catch trafficked animal products.
The non-profit organisation APOPO already uses southern giant pouched rats to sniff for landmines in post-conflict zones and to detect tuberculosis. Now, Isabelle Szott, Kate Webb and their colleagues at APOPO have tested the ability of the pouched rats to detect four commonly trafficked items from endangered species: rhino horn, elephant ivory, pangolin scales and African blackwood.
Between 2015 and 2021, rhinos, pangolins and elephants accounted for 73 percent of wildlife trafficking seizures (没收物) by authorities.
The rats could detect the illegal materials hidden in containers and packages even when they were masked by other scents (气味), with false alarms below 2 percent.
The illegal wildlife trade is one of the leading causes of the biodiversity crisis, but dealing with it is costly and politically challenging, especially across international borders. Current methods to prevent wildlife trafficking, such as screening shipping containers with X-rays at crowded ports, are also expensive and difficult to be widely used. The researchers say that sniffer rats offer an alternative, low-cost way to prevent international wildlife trafficking networks.
“The rats have particular skill sets that can make an excellent complement to the present screening tools,” says Webb. “They can be easily transferred between trainers, and they are small enough to be lifted onto containers and move in tight spaces. They also have an average lifespan of eight years, but we have rats as old as eleven years in retirement.” “Employing rats to prevent wildlife trafficking may help the global fight against networks that take advantage of humans and nature,” says Szott.
32.What makes trained rats particularly suitable for detecting wildlife products
A.They are easy to carry. B.They can run fast and hide easily.
C.They can catch animals. D.They have improved sense of smell.
33.What was the result of the test on the pouched rats
A.They defeated the screening tools. B.They gave false alarms frequently.
C.They detected 73% of the wildlife seizures. D.They effectively detected the hidden things.
34.What is the advantage of using sniffer rats over current methods
A.Sniffer rats can be used at ports.
B.Sniffer rats help reduce the cost.
C.Sniffer rats can solve the wildlife problems.
D.Sniffer rats can remove political challenges across borders.
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Trained rats can remove biodiversity crisis.
B.Trained rats can protect endangered species.
C.Trained rats will replace the current screening tools.
D.Trained rats can sniff out illegal wildlife trafficking.

One sunny day, Alex, a young boy, was walking home from school when he noticed something unusual. A small, scruffy (邋遢的) dog was sitting alone by the side of the road, its eyes full of fear and confusion. The poor dog looked lost and hungry. Alex felt a sense of empathy (同情) in his heart as he walked towards the dog slowly, offering it a piece of his sandwich.
The moment the dog cautiously took the food from his hand, Alex’s heart melted. He could see that the dog was alone and scared, and he knew he couldn’t just leave it there. Without a second thought, Alex decided to take the dog home. He carefully hid the dog in the garage, hoping his father wouldn’t find out.
For days, Alex spent all his spare time in the garage, playing with the dog. He named the dog Max, and they quickly became close friends. Their bond grew stronger day by day as they shared countless adventures together. Max brought so much joy into Alex’s life.
One day, Alex’s father discovered their secret. He was surprised and told the boy to put Max back on the street, thinking it was for the best. With a heavy heart, Alex did as he was told. He left Max at the park, hoping that someone else would find him and give him a loving home. But as he walked away, his heart ached with sadness, tears welling up in his eyes.
Alex was heartbroken. He missed Max terribly and found it hard to focus on anything else. His grades started to slip (下滑), and he became quiet and silent. His usual cheerfulness had disappeared, replaced by deep sadness that seemed to swallow him whole. Seeing this, his father realized how much Max meant to Alex.

67.The father decided to bring Max back. He went to extraordinary lengths to search for the dog in the nearby blocks but in vain. It suddenly crossed his mind that maybe Max would have returned to the park. He breathed a sigh of relief the moment he saw Max wandering in the park. The setting sun cast an orange glow over them. Exhausted but joyful, the father brought Max home. At the sight of Max, so amazed was Alex that he rushed forward, knelt down and hugged Max tight, his eyes twinkling with excitement. From then on, Max became an integral part of their family.
The boy took full responsibility for Max. Tiring as feeding, bathing and walking Max were, he gained a great sense of accomplishment from these puppy care chores. The days of Max’s company witnessed Alex’s heartier laughter and gradual academic progress. It dawned on the father that Max helped Alex build confidence and taught him about responsibility and compassion. Had it not been for this experience, Alex would have never known the bond between humans and animals is built on love, trust and mutual respect, enriching both lives.
