Huang Xuhua, an excellent Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his amazing achievements and strong spirit will always be remembered and will guide China’s future.
Born in Guangdong Province in 1926, Huang saw his country suffer from foreign attacks during his childhood. Because of these bad memories and experiences, he decided to study hard and use his knowledge to make his country stronger. In the 1950s, China began the challenging task of building nuclear submarines (核潜艇). Huang Xuhua bravely joined this project. A Chinese girl shares her adventure stories as a mountaineer
17岁中国女生登顶非洲最高峰
“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Kilimanjaro,” said Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountaineer from Hunan.
Xu climbed the tallest peak (山峰) in Africa on Jan 1. She even stood on top of Mount Qomolangma last May, making her the youngest Chinese girl to climb to the world’s highest peak from the southern slope (南坡).
Xu’s mountaineering journey began on a family trip to Xizang and Sichuan four years ago. Passing by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan, she felt drawn to its beauty and decided to try climbing it. She fell in love with mountaineering right then and there.
For the next few years, Xu did hard training. She went to the mountains in Yunnan and Sichuan every month, climbing peaks over 5,000 meters and doing daily physical exercises like running, swimming and rope skipping (跳绳). All that hard work got her ready for the big challenges she would face on Kilimanjaro.
Above 4,000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the climate (气候) is similar to a desert, with big temperature differences. The whole climb took seven days, during which Xu faced unpredictable weather such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were the main challenges. Xu had to keep an eye on the temperature and change her clothes when the temperature changed.
This climb was also a learning experience for Xu. She was climbing with Xia Boyu, the first Chinese climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. “Every time I felt like giving up, just seeing Xia was enough to inspire me. He was almost 74 years old, but was still pushing on despite (尽管) having bloodied (流血的) legs from his prosthesis,” Xu said.
Looking ahead, Xu has set great goals for herself. She plans to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents (大陆) and visit the North and South Poles (南极) by the time she’s 18. That’s her “7+2 program”.

Role models inspire youth
Young Chinese people devote themselves to serving the society
有担当,有梦想,新一代的榜样让青春闪光
Editor’s note: Since 1997, the China Youth May Fourth Medal has been given to excellent individuals (个人) and organizations to inspire (激励) young people. This year, China awarded (授予) 30 individuals and 20 organizations the China Youth May Fourth Medal for their great role in leading young people to work hard and contribute (做贡献) to the country. Let’s look at some of them.
Improving skills
Liang Jiawei, 30, is now a teacher at Zhongshan Technician College. While studying at the school in 2017, he represented China at the 44th World Skills Competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and won a gold medal. This is China’s first and only gold medal in the event.
Liang still remembers the training in fiber optic fusion splicing (光纤熔接) he did at the time, in which he fused two glass fibers, each thinner than a hair. He had to take great care or the fibers could break in his hands.
To improve his precision (精准度), he spent over 10 hours each day on technical research and hands-on training. From morning to night, his thick work clothes became wet with sweat (汗水) again and again, and the skin (皮肤) on his hands was worn away.
From an ordinary technical school student to a world champion, Liang has achieved his dream in his own way and with his own hands, said Guangzhou Daily.
Keeping cultural relics alive
A team working on the digital (数字的) protection of cultural relics (文物) at the Dunhuang Academy has used digital technology to breathe new life into the Mogao Grottoes. However, the process is far from easy.
Consider Cave 130, one of the most challenging projects. Normally, caves are not that tall so it’s easy to collect information about cultural relics in them, but in Cave 130, the team had to set up eight levels of scaffolding (脚手架) to get a good look at them. On each level of the scaffolding, they had to collect about 10,000 images to capture (捕捉) the details of the murals (壁画) and Buddha statues (佛像) in the cave. In the later stages of the project, team members even tried to drink less water before work to avoid having to go to the bathroom. Finally, they got more than 120,000 images in Cave 130, Guangming Daily reported.
This is just one of the caves they have worked on. As noted by Gansu Daily, by the end of 2023, the team had got digital images of murals in 290 caves and the 3D reconstruction (重建) of 45 colored sculptures (雕塑).
Saving lives on the sea
Zhan Chunpei, 33, is the first female captain (女船长) of an ocean-going public vessel (远洋公务船) in China. After graduating from Shanghai Maritime University, Zhan has worked on the large patrol and rescue vessel (巡航救助船) Haixun 01 for over 10 years.
Zhan took part in more than 20 major rescue missions (任务) on the sea, including the search for the disappeared flight MH370. The first difficulty Zhan overcame while working on board was feeling seasick (晕船的). She grew from throwing up nine to 10 times a day to standing gale-force winds (狂风) with no problem.
As a woman in this male-heavy profession (男性居多的职业), Zhan has heard voices of doubt. However, she believes that what truly holds women back is not the profession but people’s thinking. “There has been an improvement in facilities (设备) ... on board. In the office of remote sensing (遥感) scientist Liu Shaochuang, there is a huge photograph of a camel he snapped a decade ago in Xinjiang. He crouched for hours by a pool of water in the Gobi Desert to capture the image.
Since 2012, he has led a team in tracking and studying wild camels using satellite remote sensing technology.
Unlike zoologists who focus on species, Liu has studied the interrelationship between endangered animals and their environment, which he believes will help develop better protection strategies in the face of climate change.
His interest in wild camels began when his team tested a prototype (雏形) design of the lunar rover Yutu in the desert. Living in the harsh deserts in northwestern China and southwestern Mongolia, camels are listed as critically endangered animals. Experts estimate that the population of this species is currently less than 1, 000, of which around 650 are in China.
“Ten years ago, the research depended only on human observation, which was very primitive (原始的), ” Liu says. Because camels are fully migratory (迁徙) and can travel over long distances, scientists used to learn their habits by studying hoof prints and droppings. It was hard to find one camel in the desert, let alone track it. But Liu thought his expertise in satellite navigation (导航) and remote sensing might come in useful in the study of wild camels.
It was not easy at first. Liu learned zoology from scratch. His team had to spend several weeks each year braving dust and sandstorms in the vastness of the Gobi Desert seeking out camels. A scar on his right eyebrow is the result of a rollover accident on a rugged mountain road in Xinjiang.
“The most exciting moment was attaching a satellite positioning collar to a wild camel.” The tracking collar, equipped with special receivers, weighs only a few hundred grams. It can detach automatically (自动分离) and will not have a negative impact on the daily lives of the animals. The locations of the tracked animals are transmitted via satellite every day. Based on the data, scientists can get to know their migratory paths, living environments and possible threats they may meet with.
For Liu, it is worth the significant sci-tech effort to study such a rare species. He adds wildlife protection and research will become more precise and efficient with the help of technology.
62.What was it that made tracking wild camels difficult
A.The number of camels experienced a sharp decline.
B.Massive migration made camels cover huge distances.
C.Primitive tools were used in human observation.
D.Hoof prints and droppings were never to be seen.
63.What can be inferred from the scar on his right eyebrow
A.His carelessness in carrying out his research.
B.His inexperience at the very beginning of his work.
C.The hard conditions under which he worked.
D.The stress he met with in his work.
64.What does paragraph 7 mainly focus on
A.The formation of the tracking collar. B.The definition of the tracking collar.
C.The importance of the tracking collar. D.The function of the tracking collar.
65.Which of the following can best describe Liu Shaochuang
A.Generous and ambitious. B.Confident and grateful.
C.Creative and determined. D.Optimistic and modest.
After not swimming in big races for over four years, China’s Olympic champion Sun Yang is back! Even though he is 32 years old, he is still one of the best swimmers in China.
On Aug 25, Sun won the men’s 400m freestyle race at the National Summer Swimming Championships in Hefei, Anhui. He finished in 3 minutes and 49.58 seconds. This wasn’t his fastest time ever, but it was still a big win because he worked very hard over the past four years.
Sun became famous after winning China’s first Olympic gold medal in men’s swimming at the London 2012. He also won more gold medals at the Rio 2016.
In 2020, Sun was given an eight-year ban (禁赛) because of a problem with a doping test (药检), but it was later shortened to four years and three months. This stopped him from swimming in the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. During the ban, Sun trained on his own, without the support of a professional team. He worked so hard that he didn’t take a single day off from training.
“The past four years were so hard, tougher (艰难) than being born again, which made me enjoy each and every race even more.” said Sun after his win. “To be able to stand on top of the podium (领奖台) at my first meet in over four years, I feel like everything has paid off.”

On the afternoon of July 27th, Beijing time, in the 10-meter air rifle (气步枪) mixed team final at the Paris Olympics in France, Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao won the first place. This marked the first gold medal of the Paris Olympics and the first for the Chinese sports delegation (代表团) at the Paris Olympics in France.
What stands out is the “relaxed demeanor”(松弛感) showed by these two post-2000s athletes (运动员). Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao did their best performance during the competitions and kept an air of calmness after their victory. Different from most gold medal winners’ tears of joy and excitement, the two young athletes stayed very calm on the world’s most shining stage. Not influenced by the great pressure of the Olympics, they focused on their competitions, meeting challenges with a calm mind.
The “relaxed demeanor”, or “sense of ease”, is a state of mind that is neither arrogant (骄傲的) nor anxious. It reflects a person’s ability to deal with stress, and it comes from emotional stability (稳定性) and strong self-control.
However, “relaxed demeanor” is not about being passive or against hard work. There is no doubt that those who want to get success need to work hard. The wisdom of “relaxed demeanor” calls for a calm way and a peaceful mind to face life’s challenges and changes. In today’s society, many may fall into stress and anxiety, and “relaxed demeanor” becomes a luxury (奢侈品). By understanding “relaxed demeanor”, we can relax ourselves a little while working hard and better enjoy the journey of life.
