Kongzi, Confucius in English, is a great philosopher. He lived in China from 551 BC to 479 BC. He gave China and the world deep thoughts and ideas about life and how to live it well. They are known far and wide. Also, his works are studied in many top universities.
Confucius found out three main truths about a good life. First, he said we should respect (尊重) the king. Next, we should do everything possible to respect each other. Finally, he believed that we can have a really good and happy life if we learn to live in harmony(和谐). This means that we should try to find a way to live peacefully both with each other, and with the natural world.
During his lifetime, Confucius traveled across China, working as a teacher. Wherever possible, he tried to put his ideas into action. None of his wise sayings were written down while he was alive. His followers collected them after his death. One of his greatest thoughts is that “Don't do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” Slowly, people everywhere learned about his wisdom.

The latest encouraging moment happened on October 30th, 2024. The Long March-2F carrier rocket lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China, successfully sent Cai Xuzhe and new taikonauts Song Lingdong and female astronaut Wang Haoze on the Shenzhou-19 mission into the Tiangong Space Station, where they will work and live for 6 months. On November 4th, at 1:24 a.m, the Shenzhou-18 mission crew returned to the ground successfully. Before leaving, Ye’s team handed over their duties to the Shenzhou-19 team. More research work will be completed and great challenges are ahead waiting for them.
Years of preparations were made for the moment. For example, enough knowledge and skills helped deal with problems, and physical and mental (心理的) training helped to keep the best condition. Although it’s the second time for Cai Xuzhe to fly into space, he again received hard training. They believe it’s their duty to do that for our country and set a good example for teenagers.

The year 2024 is an important year for Chinese doctor Wang Zhenyi. He turned 100 this year and got the Medal of the Republic (共和国勋章) for his hard work and achievements. Wang spent decades studying leukemia (白血病) and helping patients who live with it.
Wang was born in Shanghai in 1924. He decided to be a doctor at age 7 when his grandmother died of an illness. “The underdeveloped medicine could not free her from disease, and that was when I decided to be a doctor to help other people,” said Wang.
In 1942, Wang went to university to study medicine. He left the university in 1948 and then began working at a hospital. Wang set himself a big goal of curing (治愈) leukemia. The goal was difficult. For doctors, leukemia is one of the most difficult diseases to cure.
Wang went through many difficult times when he tried to achieve his goal. In the middle of the last century, he saw about 60 patients dying of leukemia in one year. He said it hurt him most to see patients suffering from the disease when there was nothing he could do.
However, this did not stop Wang. He tried harder. Each day, after finishing his work, Wang spent almost all his free time doing studies. After years of hard work and tries, he made great progress. Over the years, Wang has helped tens of thousands of patients.

Suona artist Liu Wenwen had another big moment at this year’s graduation from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She became China’s first Ph.D.in the suona. Her journey to that achievement was hard but well worth it.
Liu was, in fact, “destined (注定的)” to pick up the suona. Nearly everyone in her family plays this instrument, and the tradition goes back over 300 years. In that sense, what she liked as a young girl—the piano, dancing didn’t really matter.
In primary school, Liu had to get up at 4 a.m. every day to practice the suona in a garden near her home. After school, she had to practice at home, too. “It was noisy,” Liu says. “I still remember my parents always arguing with our neighbors.”
When Liu was eight, her mother, Liu Hongmei, began taking her to bigger cities like Beijing to learn from well-known musicians. They would take the late train and arrive in Beijing in the middle of the night. To save money, they would rest in the underpasses (地下通道) of Chang’an Street until it was time for her lesson the next morning.
Things got better from the second year of middle school. Liu finally had a regular teacher, the famous suona player Liu Ying. Liu Ying taught her for free until she got into the Shanghai Conservatory of Music after finishing high school. That’s when a new chapter began. She picked up new skills and gained a deeper understanding of the suona. It was not the most popular instrument among her peers (同龄人), but she was proud to play it.
Liu has performed at many big events. One of the most unforgettable was when she performed with the famous composer Tan Dun in Australia in 2017. She played the most famous suona piece, A Hundred Birds Paying Homages to the Phoenix, and wowed the Sydney Opera House with cheerful bird-like sounds.
Those sounds should be heard by more people. For that goal, Liu has experimented with many new ways to mix suona art with modern music. “I believe in being open-minded and trying new things,” she says.

“This first Lily, her mother was the housekeeper for the great pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin, here in Paris. He had given Lily’s mother a job and a place to live when they hadn’t had anywhere to go, after Lily’s father died.”
Grandma continues, “Thousands of people came to Chopin’s funeral (葬礼), held here in Paris. Many did not know him. To them, he was a world-famous musician. To Lily and her mother, he was someone who had shown kindness then they most needed it. They were sad he had died, but beauty of the music comforted them. Chopin’s own Funeral March and Mozart’s Requiem were both part of funeral.

“Yes, he left when he was a young man. Someone gave him the dirt as a gift when he left, and he kept it with him the rest of his life. He always missed Poland, but he never went home again. Russia took control of Poland and Chopin could not return. However, it was his dying wish that his heart go back to his homeland,” Grandmother says.
“But Grandmother, I know he was buried here, in Paris,” I say.
“True, his body is here, buried (埋葬) with the Polish dirt. But his heart is not here. His heart was taken back to Poland, as he wished.”
“Ludwike, Chopin’s older sister came from Poland to Paris to help care for him in the final weeks of his life. Ludwika promised she would get his heart back to Poland, but it was too dangerous for her to do herself. After the funeral, she asked Lily for help. Lily was very afraid because she knew this would be a dangerous trip.
“We cannot repay his kindness, but we would like to try,” said Lily. She decided to help Ludwika make Frédéric's dying wish come true.

“The 2026 Winter Olympics might be my last Olympics. Whatever the result will be, I have only one goal to be better than my earlier results, ” 34-year-old Olympic champion Xu Mengtao once said.
Xu was born in Liaoning Province in 1990. Her parents sold mutton skewers (羊肉串) and Xu often helped out during holidays. Xu learned gymnastics (体操) at the age of 4. And then she changed to freestyle skiing aerials (自由式滑雪空中技巧) at the age of 12, when she was considered too tall to continue gymnastics.
Xu has had four operations on her knees. When she took part in the 2022 Winter Olympics, there were steel pins (钢钉) in her knees. Unluckily, she failed to get a gold medal, although she tried her best. But failures and pains didn’t stop her. Xu finally realized her dream at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, by completing triple flips (三周空翻) on her final jump.
In her book, Xu writes down her true feelings about her life over the past years, her memories of heart—stopping international competitions, the number of medals she won, the low points she managed to overcome and her full preparations for each competition. “Plan each jump, review each problem and look for every possibility. The real situation is unpredictable, so I have to be fully prepared, ” Xu wrote in her book.
“I hope my personal experiences can encourage more people to go after their dreams,” Xu added. “Don’t stop trying. It’s hard to say when all your hard work will pay off, but it will when it matters most. ”
