Are electric cars (电车) good for the Earth Many of us would probably say yes. But Robert Sansone knows the answer isn’t that simple. Sansone is called a natural-born engineer. It is not surprising if you know the 17-year-old has completed nearly 60 engineering projects.
A couple of years ago, Sansone watched a video about the advantages and disadvantages of electric cars. The video explained how the motors (发动机) of these cars are made. Most of them use rare-earth metals (稀土金属). These materials are very expensive. Even worse, they are often collected in ways that are harmful to the Earth. “Must we use these metals Is there a more environmentally-friendly way ” Sansone thought. He had heard of the synchronous reluctance motor (同步电动机) before. But its performance should be improved.
Over the following year, Sansone put one design after another to the test. Things didn’t go well at first. He failed fourteen times before coming up with a working model. The model is about 40% more powerful than a traditional one. And it doesn’t use rare-earth metals. These efforts have helped Sansone win a big award. He took part in this year’s Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (大奖赛) with his motor. It’s the world’s largest pre-college science competition. He stood out from more than 1,800 competitors to win first prize.
Sansone, however, isn’t yet done with his invention because it is far from perfect. It is difficult to make. This means it’s hard to become widely used. So Sansone has continued to improve and test his motor. Hopefully Sansone’s design will completely change the electric car industry one day.
1.How many engineering projects has Sansone completed at the age of 17
2.Are rare-earth metals expensive
3.What is the world’s largest pre-college science competition
4.What prize did Sansone win in the science competition
5.Why isn’t Sansone done with his invention yet

On July 31st, 2024, in the final of women’s doubled 10-meter platform diving (女子双人十米跳台) at the Paris Olympics, Chinese athletes (运动员) Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan performed perfectly and won the championship (冠军) with a total score of 359.10. They were the “twin stars” pair. They left a deep impression on me.
From the first dive, they started the “disappearing water splash technique (水花消失术)”. Their five dives were very good. They controlled the water splash very well. The scores of each dive were 56.40, 54.60, 80.10, 85.44 and 82.56.
From winning one gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics to winning two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, Quan Hongchan has won three gold medals at the age of only 17. Why could she be a young winner
Quan Hongchan trained very hard in her daily life. She is a girl with a strong will and often trained an hour longer than others before leaving the training room. In order to make every “jump” perfect, she had to practice thousands of times! However, she never complained (抱怨) of hardship.

Jin Yucheng, the 9th Mao Dun Literature Prize winner, is famous for his novel Blossoms. Now he is showing Shanghai art lovers that he is also a skilled painter.
On November 25, 2023, Jin Yucheng opened an exhibition at the Bund. One Museum in Shanghai. It will last until January 28, 2024. At the exhibition, people can see more than 200 paintings, including 40 illustrations (插图) of the novel Blossoms.
Titled “Blossoms”, the exhibition takes the same name as the novel for which Jin won the Mao Dun Prize. The 71-year-old writer was an editor of the Shanghai Literature magazine. In the book, he describes the local lives from the 1960s to the 1990s. With wide use of the local Shanghai dialect (方言), Blossoms won nearly all the top prizes in Chinese literature shortly after it came out in 2012. When asked about his early connection to art, Jin replied, “It all related to a book of Tutorial Pen Drawings for the Architecture Department in the 1970s.” At that time, Jin was one of young Chinese people sent to work in the countryside of Heilongjiang Province. He could not remember how often he studied the book in the dormitory of a farm in northeast China. After returning to Shanghai in 1976, Jin worked in a clock and watch factory, and he learned mechanical (机械的) drawing for half a year, which was suitable for his painting skills.
The exhibition for Jin Yucheng’s novel Blossoms brings the story to life and gives readers a deeper understanding of the culture and traditions of Shanghai. Besides, they can also appreciate the beauty of everyday life and experience the city through the eyes of the artist.

Moreover, making reading a fun activity, like drama performances of book stories, can attract kids’ attention. By these means, we can help cultivate a love for reading in more students.
