During the summer, Hu Miaokun, a 19-year-old with congenital (先天的) deafness, received offers from seven universities, after years of efforts.
Born in 2005 in a village in Hubei Province, Hu lost his father at five and later lived with his grandparents after his mother remarried. Supported by his family, he was admitted to a school for children with hearing disability. “Adapting to life in a group was tough,” Hu sighed. “When I first started school, everything felt scary. I couldn’t hear anything, completely lost. I had to get used to the new environment, follow new rules, and learn how to interact with others. But over time, these challenges became easier to manage.”
Hu recalls how his teachers used tailored techniques and tools to aid learning. After middle school, Hu attended a specialized high school. For students with hearing and speech impairments (损伤), learning English proved particularly difficult. While many of his schoolmates had some basic knowledge of the language and were exposed to English through songs, movies, and everyday conversations, Hu had no previous exposure, making the task even more challenging.
“My key is reading, writing, and translation,” Hu said. He created a detailed study plan and excelled. Hu Miaokun took the national college en trance examination. His hard work paid off. Since August, Hu Miaokun has received offers from all seven universities to which he applied. Ultimately, Hu Miaokun decided to pursue product design at his dream school, Tianjin University of Technology.
With ambitions of becoming a 3D designer specializing in product modeling, he is now focusing on mastering various modeling software. “I’m deeply thankful to my aunt and everyone who has supported me,” Hu Miaokun signed. “I will continue to work hard in my studies and, in the future, use my skills to inspire and assist others.”

A. To show the barriers Hu met. B. To recommend the key to learning.
C. To highlight the importance of English. D. To promote daily interactions in English.
10. Which of the following words can best describe Hu?
A. Caring and loving. B. Generous and grateful.
C. Honest and demanding. D. Determined and ambitious.
11. What is Hu Miaokun’s primary long-term goal?
A. To become a software developer.
B. To expand his network of supporters.
C. To specialize in areas of product modeling.
D. To give back to society employing his skills.
D
\The rapid development of the internet and artificial intelligence (AI) has greatly changed human life. Among AI technologies, Deepseek, a smart system created in 2022 by Chinese scientists, stands out. Unlike traditional AI tools, Deepseek focuses on “understanding human intentions” rather than just following commands. For example, it can analyze users’ emotions from text messages and offer personalized suggestions.
Since its launch, Deepseek has been used in education, healthcare, and environmental protection. In schools, it helps teachers design courses based on students’ learning habits. In hospitals, it assists doctors in predicting diseases by studying medical data. More importantly, Deepseek’s energy-saving design reduces computing power consumption by 50%, making AI technology greener.
However, some experts warn that over-reliance (过度依赖) on AI might weaken human creativity. Prof. Li from Peking University says, “We should use AI as a tool, not a replacement for human thinking.” Deepseek’s team also agrees, emphasizing their goal is to “empower humans, not control them.”
Looking ahead, experts believe AI like Deepseek will reshape careers. Routine jobs like data entry may decline, but new roles in AI management and human-AI interaction design are emerging. As the system’s lead engineer Dr. Wang noted: “The real challenge isn’t building smarter machines, but teaching people to grow alongside them. In the future, humans will surely coexist harmoniously with artificial intelligence.”
12. What is Deepseek’s main research focus?
A. Following users’ orders quickly. B. Reducing energy consumption.
C. Understanding human intentions. D. Replacing human jobs.
13. How might Deepseek help environmental protection?
A. By controlling human behavior. B. Through its energy-saving technology.
C. By replacing environmental scientists. D. Through emotion analysis.
14. What does the underlined word “empower” most likely mean?
A. Control completely. B. Make weaker.
C. Give order to. D. Provide power to.
15. What is Dr. Wang’s attitude towards the development of AI according to the passage?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Anxious.

【答案】Dear Tim,
Thank you so much for inviting me to take part in the summer camp organized by your school in the coming summer holiday. I am writing to inquire about some specific information.
First, I wonder if it is convenient for you to inform me of the specific schedule. Second, because this is the first time for me to participate in such an activity, would you please offer suggestions on what I need to take. What’s more, would you please tell me how much it will cost?
I would appreciate a response from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours,
Li Hua
