3.Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50﹣kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg,an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem,Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says.According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would bum about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would bum walking, although fewer than running, which would probably bum about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does,Dr.Norberg says.According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips,so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.It takes some practice.
(1)Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A.They must run long distances.
B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.

A.It's more popular at the Olympics.
B.It's less challenging physically.
C.It's more effective in body building.
D.It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
(3)What is Dr.Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A.Getting experts' opinions.
B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach.
D.Doing regular exercises.
(4)Which word best describes the authors attitude to race walking?
A.Skeptical.
B.Objective.
C.Tolerant.
D.Conservative.

14.It was a rainy day, like every other rainy.day I've ever remembered. The only unusual thing was how anxious the adults seemed to be getting.
I started to pay more attention whenever I saw the news on at our house,at a restaurant,or anywhere else. The meteorologists(气象学家)kept saying that the rain hadn't stopped in a long time, and it didn't look like it was going to stop anytime soon.I didn't really know what that meant for us,since Mom was always saying that rain was good for all the plants.
The next morning, however,I began to understand.I woke up and went down for breakfast.Usually Mom or Dad was already eating by the time that I woke up,but neither of them was at the kitchen table, and the lights all over the house were off. This was weird,I thought.I went to get out the milk, but there was a note:on the refrigerator telling me not to open the door.As I was wondering what I could eat for breakfast,I noticed that the rain was still going.and that I could hear noises coming from the basement(地下室).I went to investigate.Peeking through the basement door,I immediately stopped. There was water down there! It didn't look like a lot,but there were toys and things floating by!I could hear Mom and Dad's voices.
"Hello! What's going on down here?"I called.
"Good morning,Vicky. All of this rain is causing some problems. The power all over the town is out.Our basement is flooded, and so are some of the roads.A lot of houses have water in them, too,"Dad called back.
A little water didn't seem too bad,and the power had gone out before.Dad has already purchased a pump in case of the emergency,so I wasn't too worried.Mom and Dad seemed to be taking care of it.
Paragraph 1:
Down into the basement, however,I got frozen at the scene that had never came to me.___________
Paragraph2:
Helpless,we decided to drive around to see how other people in our town were doing.___________

A.They must run long distances.
B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
(2)What advantage does race walking have over running? D
A.It's more popular at the Olympics.
B.It's less challenging physically.
C.It's more effective in body building.
D.It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
(3)What is Dr.Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking? A
A.Getting experts' opinions.
B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach.
D.Doing regular exercises.
(4)Which word best describes the authors attitude to race walking? B
A.Skeptical.
B.Objective.

Paragraph2:
Helpless,we decided to drive around to see how other people in our town were doing.___________
【答案】Down into the basement, however,I got frozen at the scene that had never come to me.All the furniture that was once carefully arranged now was in a great mess, one table leaning against the eastern wall while the desk floating against the seemingly breaking window on the other side. Dad was fumbling through the chaos for the long﹣packed pump in the cupboard up on the wall.On reaching the cupboard door,Dad stayed motionless, realizing the power had been cut off and the pump now was just useless metal pieces.
Helpless,we decided to drive around to see how other people in our town were doing.A lot of roads were closed and one bridge was even shut because of the rushing water over it!Seeing a man filling bags with sand to keep the water away,we stopped to help.During conversations,we learned this man habitually saved things for emergency and the non﹣stop rain this time urged him to get fully prepared beforehand with badly﹣needed stuff against the possible flood. His house now was safe and sound. How important it was to save necessities for a rainy day!
