二.阅读理解(共4小题)
2.In 1974,Yuan Longping succeeded in developing his first hybrid rice after overcoming enormous technical difficulties.Since then,Yuan has continued to work on and improve rice technology.By 2013,Yuan and his team had developed 126 varieties of super hybrid rice, grown in 46.7 million hectares of rice fields. In a 2015 interview with The Nikkei newspaper, the then 85﹣year﹣old scientist said that he wanted to raise the yield to 17 tons per hectare by his 90th birthday. As it turned out,Yuan achieved this goal three years earlier.
In recognition of Yuan's contributions to the country, the Chinese government awarded him the State Supreme Science and Technology Prize,or the Chinese Nobel Prize,in 2000.
Yuan's hybrid rice was not only a miracle(奇迹)that transformed famine(饥荒)into feast, but "was one of the biggest agricultural success stories that helped power the Chinese economic takeoff",Zhai Huqu told Beijing Review.
Yuan's hybrid rice has been helping to solve food problems around the world. The late US economist Don Paarlberg said that Yuan's achievement is a victory against the threat of famine and his work is leading humanity to a world with ample food.
Yuan has shared his knowledge and techniques with foreign scientists and helped promote planting hybrid rice in more than 30 countries and regions around the world. So can he communicate with foreigners? As it turns out,the scientist speaks fluent English.
In 2017,he gave a 20﹣minute English speech at the 9th Shandong High﹣Level Talents Forum in Qingdao. At the beginning,he humbly said, "I speak broken English." However, his speech turned out to be a huge success with barely any pauses or mistakes. It inspired many to a greater effort into their English studies.
It was not the first time that Yuan had shown his excellent English skills.Back at the 1979 International Rice Research Conference, the scientist fluently answered questions about his hybrid rice research in English and was praised by participants for his language skills.

3.The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research.Recent studies have found positive effects.A study conducted in Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further﹣changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater."We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day," explained Michael Strano,a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables.Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three﹣and﹣a﹣half hours. The light, about one﹣thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology,Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self﹣powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one﹣off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off "switch" where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US.Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)﹣such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway﹣a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
(1)What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.A new study of different plants.
B.A big fall in crime rates.
C.Employees from various workplaces.
D.Benefits from green plants.

A.They will speed up energy production.
B.They may transmit electricity to the home.
C.They might help reduce energy consumption.
D.They could take the place of power plants.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Can we grow more glowing plants?
B.How do we live with glowing plants?
C.Could glowing plants replace lamps?
D.How are glowing plants made pollution﹣free?
4.The third﹣generation hybrid rice(杂交水稻)which was developed by Yuan Longping, the "father of hybrid rice",and his team ran its first public yield(产量)monitoring from Monday to Tuesday and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety,G3﹣1 S/P19,came to1046.3 kg per mu(about 667 square meters),based on two pieces of land in Qingzhu Village under the city of Hengyang in central China's Hunan Province.
"Some previous high﹣yielding hybrid rice varieties in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing(播种)to harvesting, while the figure was shortened to around 125 days for the new variety. This is one of the most important features(特征)of the third﹣generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides(杀虫剂)and fertilizers(化肥) ,thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency." said Qian Qian, the deputy director of the China National Rice Research Institute.
Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third﹣generation hybrid rice is easier to be cultivated(种植) by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not "ideal conditions" carefully selected beforehand but were close to the paddies (稻田) of ordinary farmers.
Nowadays.China's average yield of rice is about 500 kg per mu.Ordinary farmers can produce 600 kg to 700 kg of rice per mu by growing some excellent second﹣generation hybrid rice varieties. However, under the same planting conditions and environment, the yield of the third﹣generation hybrid rice could reach 800 kg per mu.China now feeds around 20 percent of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's arable (可耕种的)land.
At present,Yuan's team has nine third﹣generation hybrid rice combinations under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third﹣generation hybrid rice has the comprehensive strength to promote a greener and more sustainable development of China's rice production with higher quality and yield.
(1)What feature of the new hybrid rice does Qian Qian mainly talk about?
A.It saves a lot more water.
B.It achieves a higher yield.
C.It saves much more farmland.
D.It has a shorter growing period.
(2)Why is the new hybrid rice not tested in ideal areas?
A.The ordinary farmers master planting technology.
B.The researchers want to reduce the experiment cost.
C.The growing conditions the new hybrid rice needs are simple.
D.The previous rice farming provides researchers with experience.
(3)What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The high output of the third﹣generation hybrid rice.
B.The future of the new hybrid rice variety.
C.The advanced technology of the research on hybrid rice.

(4)Where is this text most likely from?
A.A guide book.
B.A news report.
C.An advertisement.
D.A fashion magazine.
5.It used to be mostly the military(军队) that used small, unpiloted aircraft, called "drones".The little planes were very costly. But as they have dropped in price more people have begun to use them.Rescue workers and farmers are among the new users.Moviemakers are using drones to film from the sky.Historians use them when they explore ancient buildings.Rescue workers use them to look for people. And now farmers are using them to watch over their crops.
Romain Faroux is a French businessman who starts companies. His father was a farmer. He believed drones could help farmers. He helped create a company that developed a small drone that could be controlled by people on the ground. They called it "Agridrone".It uses a special "optical sensor" to examine crops. He says the technology used is similar to that used by smartphones—except it has wings.
A computer program directs the drone to fly over the crops. The sensor on the drone records four different﹣colored "bands" of sunlight that are reflected off the crops.
Jean﹣Baptiste Bruggeman is a farmer. He says the drone flies over his crops at different times of the season. And this provides a lot of information about his crops. The drone pictures show him the exact amount of fertilizer the crops need.It also shows exactly where the fertilizer is needed. Some areas of a field may need more than others.
As a result,Mr Bruggeman says there is reduced nitrogen from the fertilizer after the harvest. This helps nature.Romain Faroux says farmers use information gathered by the Agridrone to place fertilizer only in areas where it was needed. Before they used the drones, farmers would put the same amount of fertilizer everywhere.
Drones also save time because farmers can examine up to three hectares in about a minute.
(1)The first paragraph is mainly about .
A.the expensive cost of drones
B.the fast development of drones
C.the wide use of drones

Egg Yolks
Many home cooks think darker egg yolks are fresher or more nutritious. But the color may be the result of coloring products in chicken feed.(3) Darker yolks aren't necessarily healthier. The belief that they are healthier is likely rooted in the idea that yolks are darker when hens are fed a diet of fresh plants, which contain the pigments (色素).
Salmon
Bright pink flesh may signal freshness to shoppers eyeing salmon, which is why salmon may have been fed synthetic astaxanthin(虾青素). (4) For example,at Costco, tickets of farmed salmon are saying "Color added through feed".
"People used to get all the coloring all over their fingers. We now kind of laugh at that," said Richard Matoian, director of a food trade association. (5) Americans, therefore, apparently aren't entirely ready to say goodbye to the artificial colors in various kinds of panies are expected to take new measures in response to customer demand.

At noon that day,I drove back to my house after the performance.Just as I entered the living room,I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs﹣﹣﹣it was the sound of my favorite violin.
"Thief!"
I dashed upstairs.Sure enough,as expected,a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance,I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then,I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile.I asked, "Are you Mr.Ram's nephew,Michael?I'm his housekeeper. Two days ago,I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come.It must be you. You're really like him!"
On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said,"Has my uncle gone out?I think I'd better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while."
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, "Do you like to play the violin so much?"
"Yes,but I'm so poor that I can't afford it." the boy replied.
"Then,I give this violin to you." The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin.Going out to the living room,he suddenly saw on the wall a huge color photo of me playing the violin in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate(装饰) the living room with the housekeeper's photo.

A.A new study of different plants.
B.A big fall in crime rates.
C.Employees from various workplaces.
D.Benefits from green plants.
(2)What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers? A
A.To detect plants' lack of water.
B.To change compositions of plants.
C.To make the life of plants longer.
D.To test chemicals in plants.
(3)What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future? C
A.They will speed up energy production.
B.They may transmit electricity to the home.
C.They might help reduce energy consumption.
D.They could take the place of power plants.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text? C

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

【答案】Paragraph 1:
A few years later,I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students.Fascinated by the gentle sound of one participant,I was wholeheartedly impressed by his wonderful performance and solid strength. As I flicked my eyes up to glance at the performer,I was so astonished to see a thin face,so familiar, yet now lit up with joy and confidence. The "thief"!For an instant,I was amazed that the kindness I offered to cover the boy's misconduct would made such a big difference!
Paragraph 2:
After the competition, "Michael" ran to me,holding a violin box.He asked with a tremble in his voice, with his thin face reddening with excitement, "Sir,do you recognize me?The nephew! It's your kindness that enlightened my life,so does your violin.Today,I can give back this violin to you without regret…" Tears welled up in my eyes.Never had I anticipated that a tiny white lie would inject such great power into others and change their life.
For an instant,I was amazed that the kindness I offered to cover the boy's misconduct would made such a big difference!
译文:一时间,我惊讶地发现,我对这个男孩的不端行为表示的善意会产生如此大的影响!
分析:这句话使用that引导宾语从句,I offered to cover the boy's misconduct 是定语从句修饰the kindness.
高分句型二:Never had I anticipated that a tiny white lie would inject such great power into others and change their life.
译文:我从来没有想到一个小小的善意谎言会给别人注入如此巨大的力量,改变他们的生活。
分析:这句话使用never置于句首,后面用部分倒装。
