When I was a teenage boy, I helped out at my parents’ furniture store in a charming New England town. The store was known for its wide range of products. One summer holiday, I was busy assisting customers to find what they needed. I always greeted them warmly at the entrance, and customers appreciated it as excellent service. I also assisted them to carry heavy things to their cars, but my parents strictly instructed me not to accept tips or anything else.
One day, an elderly lady visited the store. At first sight, I was drawn to her. She was neatly(整洁地) dressed and had a graceful presence, looking polite and friendly. She lived in a senior citizen apartment nearby and wanted to buy some chairs for her garden. After a short search, I found some chairs that met her needs. She bought two chairs and asked if I could help send them to her home just a stone’s throw away. Recognizing her old age, I agreed and carried the chairs to her building.
Upon arrival she welcomed me warmly and showed me where to place the chairs. Before I could thank her for shopping in my parents’ store, she shocked me by placing a handful of candy in my hand. Then, to my amazement, she gave me an educational book. I politely rejected it, explaining that I couldn’t accept any presents. However, she put the book in my hand and said with a smile,” If your parents don’t want you to have this, just don’t tell them. Let me tell them instead.” We both laughed, and I thanked her sincerely. I decided to follow her advice, and she told my parents that she had given me a book as a reward for my hard work. With the book, I learned a lot and started my lifelong love for reading.
Reflecting on this experience, I often think of the elderly lady and hope she will live a joyful life surrounded by loved ones forever. Her generosity and humor have left a lasting impression on me.

Going vegan or vegetarian is one way to decrease your diet’s impact on greenhouse gas emissions (排放) — but it isn’t the only way. A recent Purdue University study suggests that smaller changes can make a difference too, while improving your health.
After analyzing the 2010 grocery purchases of more than 57,000 U.S. families, Purdue researchers found 71 percent could reduce their food carbon footprint by making some changes. One is to skip the unhealthy snacks. Avoiding foods with high calorie is important and low nutritional value can reduce the total carbon footprint of U.S. family food consumption by nearly 10 percent. Items like candy, soda, and packaged snacks take more ingredients and more processing, which translates to higher environmental impacts.
Another effective way to reduce your carbon emissions is to avoid bulk buys. Households of one or two people may end up with food waste when they try to save money with bulk buys. Before you buy supersize, consider whether a three-pound jar of peanut butter will go bad before it’s used up.
The researchers of the study also suggest consuming fewer ready-made foods. One average microwave meal may not have a very large carbon footprint. But buying them regularly can add up to high emissions because ready-made foods are sold in large quantities, which makes their carbon footprint significant, the study found.
By making the above changes, the U.S. could cut more than a quarter of emissions from household food consumption, the researchers say. That’s about 36 million metric tons — about what 6.6 million households generate in a year of electricity use. “Collective action can make a huge impact,” says study co-author Hua Cai.
8. Why does the author mention being a vegetarian in Paragraph 1
A. To encourage us to become vegetarians.
B. To introduce the findings of a recent study.
C. To illustrate the impact of greenhouse gas emission.
D. To tell readers it’s not a good way to help the environment.
9. How many methods are suggested by the study to reduce our food carbon footprint
A. Two. B. Three.
C. Four. D. Five.
10. What do the underlined words “bulk buys” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Buying things in quantity.
B. Buying things of low quality.
C. Buying things out of date.
D. Buying things of low price.
11. What might Hua Cai mean by saying “Collective action can make a huge impact”
A. We should collect some materials to make a difference.
B. We should take measures quickly to make a difference.
C. We should make efforts together to make a difference.
D. We should avoid all unhealthy food to make a difference.
D
How do you beat the summer heat If you’ re like most people, you turn the air conditioning on when it’s the hottest time of the day. But what if you could use nonpeak (非高峰的) electrical hours and store the cold to use the next day This idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that’s being cooled by ice.
Eleven Madison, a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan, is using cool, frozen ice overnight to cool the building, reported CBS News. Four stories below ground, an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is low, and uses this ice to cool the building during the day. “There’s about 500,000 pounds of ice created every night,” said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies, a company that did the installation (装置) .
Air conditioning uses nearly 20% of energy use in homes and businesses globally. However, on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%. Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that. According to Paeper, the company has installed the technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide.
The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks that are each the size of a parking spot. Because there’s a lot of energy consumed in freezing water, a more effective way had to be found. “We take water, and add some other elements in it,” explained Dr. Patrick Shamberger, an associate professor at Texas A&M. “So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.”
While ice batteries aren’t being used to cool food or to power electrical devices, they’re being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. It’s a win-win for all.
12. What does the author want to stress in paragraph 3
A. The necessity of ice batteries. B. The popularity of the technology.
C The features of the high-rise. D. The significance of air conditioning.
13. Why were some elements added in the water
A. To make the water cleaner. B. To use the energy fully.
C. To control the temperature. D. To add space occupation.
14. What can be inferred about ice batteries according to the text
A. They are cheap to install. B. They are energy-saving.
C. They are extremely harmful. D. They are used to cool food.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Process of Ice Battery Production B. Power-hungry Air Conditioning
C. Advantages of Storing Electricity D. A Creative System for Cooling
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(E涂AB,F涂AC,G涂AD)
Going to outer space is a little like going camping. You have to carry with you all the food and equipment you need for your trip, so your food can’t be too heavy or hard to prepare. ____16____ Food with all the water dried out is lightweight and doesn’t spoil. So, many space foods are dried on Earth and stored in special packets.
On Earth, gravity is the force that keeps your feet on the ground and your sandwich on your plate. ____17____. To keep food from floating away, astronauts on the Space Shuttle attach the packets to a special tray. The tray can be fixed to a wall or to the astronaut’s lap. To prepare their food, astronauts use liquid forms of salt and pepper. The liquid sticks to the food better. Regular salt and pepper would float away, maybe up an astronaut’s nose. Achoo!
____18____. So astronauts drink everything from a small bag with a straw (饮料吸管) that can be closed. Astronauts say that most space foods taste pretty good.
Some, such as apples and pudding are the same as the foods you eat on Earth. Astronauts eat tortillas (玉米粉圆饼) instead of bread because they make fewer crumbs(碎屑). ____19____.
Your body uses food in space the same way it does on Earth. ____20____. During take off and landing, astronauts can’t leave their seats to go to the bathroom. They wear diapers (尿布) under their spacesuits instead. The Space Shuttle has a bathroom the size of a small closet. The toilet has bars that keep astronauts from floating away. A strong flow of air is used instead of water to flush waste down the toilet. Back on Earth it’s flushed away—or sometimes studied by scientists.
A. But there’s no gravity in space
B. Liquids float right out of cups and glasses
C. Your body must get rid of waste in space too
D. Crumbs can not be dealt with in outer space
E. In addition, everything seems to be different in outer space
F. Besides, there are no refrigerators to keep food cold and fresh
G. With them floating, they could get stuck in equipment or an astronaut’s eye

It would never have happened if Andrew had not had a flat tire on Highway 10 last night. He was on his way to Beaver Creek to attend a three-day meeting when he had the flat. Unfortunately, he did not have a spare tire so he pushed the car off the road, locked it up and managed to thumb a ride (搭便车) back to Pine Grove. It was eleven o’clock when he finally got home.
When Andrew left home in the afternoon, he had told his wife not to expect him back until Thursday or Friday. Knowing that his wife was nervous about staying in the house alone at night, Andrew checked all the windows in the house to be sure they were locked. He made his wife believe that she would be perfectly safe if she locked the front door as soon as he drove away.
When he made his way in the dark to his front door. Andrew’s only thought was how surprised his wife was going to be to see him since he should not be back until Thursday or Friday. When he turned his key in the lock, the door wouldn’t open. He remembered the lock. And he remembered that he had carefully locked all of the windows.
At that time, Andrew didn’t know a next-door neighbor had seen him approaching the house and had watched him go up the steps to the front door. In the dark, it was impossible for the neighbor to recognize Andrew. Moreover, the neighbor knew that Andrew had gone out of town for a three-day meeting. As a matter of fact, Andrew had asked the neighbor to keep an eye on the house while he was gone.

Now that he couldn’t get in from the front door or through a window, Andrew began hitting the front door hard to get his wife to open it. But it did not work, because his wife was a very sound sleeper. Just then, because of all the noise he had been making, the neighbor believed that somebody was trying to break into the house, so she called the police. After a while, Andrew thought that the only way to get into the house was to break one of the dining room windows.
But just as he was about to throw his briefcase (公文包) into the window to break it, two of the police officers controlled him from behind. Andrew could not make the officers believe that he lived there, so they took him off to the police station. Obviously, he did succeed in letting them believe that they ought to wake up the woman in the house to check his story. But there was no answer when they knocked at the door. He tried to explain to them that his wife was a very sound sleeper, but they believed that there was nobody in the house.
