Healing the Whole Family
For a long time, I didn’t know about depression and anxiety, and the adults around me never suspected, because it seemed that I had it all together: perfect SAT (美国学业能力倾向测验) score, ten AP (大学先修课程) tests passed successfully, national awards won, president of clubs, devoted volunteer, and founder of a nonprofit. When I burst into tears, my father would yell at me to stop crying. And when I shared my negative thoughts with my mother, she called me selfish. I felt unworthy of their love until I was perfect enough.
I attended Yale University as a first-generation Japanese student supported through financial aid, worked at McKinsey, one of the world’s largest consulting firms, and received two master’s degrees from Stanford University. My fears of not being good enough seem groundless now, but perhaps were understandable given my upbringing.
Raised by neglectful and abusive parents, my parents had scars they dared not uncover even for themselves to see. No one had taught them to address those traumas (创伤) and to avoid repeating them through anxiety-filled parenting. I cannot remember a time when my home was worry-free. I learned early that any moment without worry was idle.
When my grandmother died in my freshman year of college, my mother chose to “get on with” her life, focusing on raising my brother. For years after, my brother struggled with his weight and schoolwork to the point of near expulsion (开除) from school.
As my mother looked for ways to help my brother, she came across Virginia Satir’s family therapy. Satir saw every family as a system. Changing one part changes the whole thing. This made my mother start processing her own traumas. So did I. During college, I sought counseling and studied wellness. I began to keep a diary to overcome my past’s shadow. In my final year, I told my family I had seen a therapist, and that it had helped.
My family was surprised to find out my mental health challenges were “bad enough” to lead me to seek help. It was hard on my parents, who are part of a generation focused on survival rather than wellness, to hear how their parenting had made a lasting impact on me. It took much time and effort for my parents to shift away from the mindset they had grown up with.
Years into the journey, my mother now runs a nonprofit organization teaching thousands of Mandarin-speaking parents about conscious communication. At her recent workshop, heard my dad tell a parent, “I didn’t believe in therapy until my daughter told me that it’s like fixing a cavity (蛀牙洞) at the dentist, which makes a lot of sense to me now. Watching my family learn helped me see that I have room to grow, too.”
24.Why did the author mention all her achievements
A.To stress that achievements didn’t ensure emotional well-being.
B.To prove that she was qualified to be critical about her family.
C.To invite readers to rethink the definition of success.
D.To show her parents played a role in her education.
25.What is Paragraph 4 mainly talking about
A.The upbringing of the author’s parents.
B.The root cause of the author’s anxieties.
C.The terrible author-parental relationship.
D.The common fixed images of Asian students.
26.What motivated the author’s mother to deal with her own traumas
A.The focus on her own wellness.
B.The sorrow brought by the death of her own mother.
C.The fact that her daughter was diagnosed with depression.
D.The belief that changing herself might help address her son’s issues.
27.Which of the following best describes the purpose of the article
A.To analyze the generational differences in attitudes towards wellness.
B.To record how the author came to understand and forgive her parents.
C.To show the role of family interactions in mental health and trauma recovery.
D.To describe the author’s personal struggles of overcoming depression and anxiety.
C
Earth is far more alive than we previously thought, according to “deep life” studies that reveal a rich underground ecosystem beneath our feet that is almost twice the size of all the world’s oceans. Despite extreme heat, no light and intense pressure, scientists estimate it has between 15 billion and 23 billion tonnes of microorganisms. “It’s like finding a whole new reservoir (储藏) of life on Earth,” said Karen Lloyd an associate professor at the University of Tennessee.
Results suggest 70 percent of Earth’s bacteria and archaea exist in the subsurface. One organism found 2.5 kilometers below the surface has been buried for millions of years and may not rely at all on energy from the sun. Also, the methanogen (产甲烷菌) has found a way to create methane in this environment, which the methanogen may not use to reproduce or divide, but use to replace or repair broken parts. Lengths of their lives were completely different. Some microorganisms have been alive for thousands of years, barely moving except with shifts in earthquakes or eruptions. They’re just active inside, with less energy than people thought possible to support life.
The team consists of 1,200 scientists from 52 countries in disciplines ranging from geology and microbiology to chemistry and physics. A year before the conclusion of their study, they will present the findings before the American Geophysical Union’s annual meeting opens this week, which they say are made possible by technical advances on drills and microscopes.
The scientists have been wondering about the point beyond which life cannot exist, but the deeper they dig, the more life they find. There is a temperature maximum — currently 122℃ — but they believe this record will be broken if they keep exploring and developing more advanced instruments.
Questions remain, including how the microbes interact with chemical processes, and what this might reveal about how life and Earth coevolved.
28.What do the scientists find about the underground organisms
A.They can’t reproduce and divide. B.They’re the oldest living things.
C.Some of them consume no energy. D.Some of them almost always keep still.
29.What can we learn about the research from paragraph 3
A.It lasts for around one year. B.It involves efforts from many fields.
C.It promotes technical development. D.It is conducted in 52 countries.
30.Why do the scientists dig deep
A.To break their previous record.
B.To find the depth limit of life.
C.To discover more ancient microorganisms.
D.To measure the highest subsurface temperature.
31.Which of the following can be the best title
A.Earth Depths Are Full of Life
B.Organisms Live Better Underground
C.Earth Is Far Beyond Human Exploration
D.Subsurface Life Differs from That on Land
D
Clean air policies have unintended impact — driving up wetland methane (甲烷) emissions by up to 34 million tons. Reducing sulphur (硫) in the air may increase natural emissions of methane from wetlands, a new study has found.
The findings suggest that the decline of global sulphur emissions as the result of clean air policies, coupled with the warming and fertilization effects of CO emissions, lifts the lid on wetland methane production resulting in increased emissions.
The resulting additional future release of 20 million-34 million tons of methane each year from natural wetlands would mean targets to reduce human-caused emissions need to be more stringent than currently set out in the Global Methane Pledge.
Methane, which is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases in trapping heat in the atmosphere, is produced in wetlands around the world. Sulphur, which has a very specific effect in natural wetlands, can reduce methane emissions, while CO increases methane production by increasing growth in plants that make the food for methane-producing micro creatures.
Professor Vincent Gauci from the University of Birmingham, a senior author of the study, said, “Well-meaning policies aimed at reducing atmospheric sulphur appear to be having the unintended consequence of lifting this sulphur ‘lid’ on wetland methane production. This, coupled with increased CO , means we have a double whammy (晦气) effect that pushes emissions much higher.”
How has this happened Put simply, sulphur provides the conditions for one set of bacteria to outmuscle another set of microbes that produce methane when they compete over the limited food available in wetlands. Under the conditions of acid rain sulphur pollution during the past century, this was enough to reduce wetland methane emissions by up to 8%.
Lu, the lead author of the paper from Peking University, said, “Our study points to the complexity of the climate system. Representation of these complex biogeochemical interactions has not previously been well integrated into estimates of future methane emissions. We show that it is essential to consider these feedbacks to get a true understanding of the likely future of this important greenhouse gas.”
32.What effect do clean air policies bring about
A.A slowdown in global warming.
B.Rising wetland methane emissions.
C.Improved plant growth in peatlands.
D.Reduced competition among micro creatures.
33.What does the underlined word “stringent” mean in paragraph 3
A.Strict. B.Flexible. C.Ambitious. D.Striking.
34.What disadvantage does Lu identify in previous methane predictions
A.Overemphasis on human activities.
B.Excessive reliance on laboratory data.
C.Ignorance of historical emission patterns.
D.Insufficient focus on complex interactions.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Impact of CO on Wetland Ecosystems
B.The Unintended Consequences of Clean Air Policies
C.The Role of Sulphur in Reducing Methane Emissions
D.The Complexity of Climate Change and Methane Emissions

There are few things more comforting than a hug. It’s a gesture that makes you feel loved, supported, and safe. 36 In fact, for some, even a simple touch on the shoulder can cause them great discomfort. In the event that this is a person close to you, you may have even felt rejected by their attitude. Knowing the reasons behind their behavior will help you understand them. Let’s take a look at some of the possible causes.
37
A study has discovered that the degree to which we show physical affection and are comfortable with it depends on how we were raised. 38 However,as a matter of fact, some people who grew up with a lack of physical affection may later try to makeup for it. They’re the ones who always take the initiative and kiss and hug those close to them.
Low self-esteem and insecurity
39 In fact, it’s been proven that the most insecure people generally feel threatened by being close to others. By marking and keeping their distance, they feel more in control of the situation. In fact, it means they avoid feeling vulnerable. Furthermore, they feel like it saves them from rejection or an emotional bond that’s too intimate.
Trauma (创伤)and abuse
Lastly, if individuals suffered physical abuse in their past, it is highly likely that they may reject any forms of physicaI contact. This rejection is often a result of the deep-seated fear and distrust that has developed within them due to their previous experiences. Indeed, traumatic events and negative experiences, such as physical violence or abuse, can generate a great fear of establishing physical closeness with others 40
A.Parenting style
B.Fears and panic
C.However, not everyone experiences these pleasant sensations.
D.Those who dislike physical contact may not have strong and healthy self-esteem.
E.For instance, growing up in a loving family encourages children to be open and caring.
F.They may avoid getting close to others due to a panic of dirt, or the spread of certain diseases.
G.Thus, they may adopt a defensive gesture, keeping others at a distance to avoid potential harm.

It was 8:30 a.m., and I was already too tired. I had gotten up at 5:00 a.m. and rushed out the door to drive a half-hour to get my father ready to go to dialysis (透析), which was another forty minutes away. This was a typical morning for me. But this morning, in a great hurry, I had misjudged the doorway in the hospital reception area and had roughly pushed my father out of his wheelchair in front of the elevator. I felt both helpless and hopeless.
As I sat crying, my cell phone rang. It was a newer friend. In spite of my hesitation, I decided to answer the phone. I tried to calm myself down, but she could tell. “What’s wrong ” she asked.
Perhaps because my new friend was a retired nurse, she knew people and could sense the anxiety in my voice. In response to her question, I began to cry again. “I just roughly pushed my father out of his wheelchair like a sack of potatoes out in front of the elevator in the reception area of the hospital,” I said.
“Well, at least you were in the right place for that,” she said.
My tears changed to laughter.
“You know, Deb, you’re lucky nothing worse happened,” she said.
“What do you mean ” I asked.
“Well, you’re running your family business, taking care of a family, looking after a mother who has dementia (痴呆), shuttling her and your father, back and forth from medical appointments, and managing their affairs and your own. Don’t you think that’s a lot And what are you doing for you ”
“There’s no way I have time for me,” I said.
“Deb, there’s no way you don’t have time for you. Think of yourself as being in a plane, and it’s going down. You have a lot of people depending on you, but the one person who must come first to get you through all this is you. Put on your oxygen mask first, Deb, before you help others,” she said.

第二节范文:
Hearing her words, I still felt puzzled. How could I possibly make time for myself when my life was filled with so many responsibilities The thought of adding yet another item to my already overflowing to-do list seemed overwhelming. But I listened as she patiently explained that self-care wasn’t selfish. She shared examples of simple things I could do, like taking a short walk alone or reading a few pages of a book. Her calm voice calmed me down, and I began to see a ray of hope.
Gradually, I understood the meaning of her words. I realized she was right. I couldn’t keep pouring from an empty cup. That day, I decided to start small. I scheduled a half-hour each morning just for myself, even if it was just sipping coffee in peace. I also started saying “no” to unnecessary tasks. Over time, I found I had more energy and patience to deal with everything else. My friend’s advice became the lifeline I didn’t know I needed, and I learned that taking care of myself was the key to being able to take care of those I loved.

M: Oh, that was great. He really made me laugh. I hadn't heard them before. Your parents are great. They remind me a lot of my own.
M: And you spent a long time talking to them.
W: They' re interesting. I enjoy talking to interesting people.
M: But talking too long has made you late. Look, it's 10:00 pm now. How will you get home
W: Don't worry about it. The last bus is in half an hour, and I can get there in 15 minutes.
M:I bet Mom and Dad would like to meet you again.
W:I'd like that too.

M: Hi, Rachel. Nice to see you again.
W:I felt tired this morning when leaving my house. But now I feel better after sitting at my desk for a while. How was your weekend
M: You know, I was busy with my regular housework. I didn't do anything new on Saturday or Sunday. How about you
W: Well, we' ve talked about starting a new hobby together for weeks. And on Saturday, I got the chance to visit a rock-climbing area.
M: No way I must join you next time. Was it in an indoor sports center or on a mountain
W: Indoors. It was my first day trying this activity, and I had no idea how much strength it required!
M: Did you climb to the top
W: No, I only made it halfway up. I' ll try it next week I' ve decided to practice every week.
M: Awesome. Were you worried about falling or hurting yourself
W: Not really. It felt like a safe activity with proper equipment and a supportive teacher, even though heights still made me very nervous.
M: It's wonderful to release some of your fear and nervousness
W: Sure. But the main benefit is the community at the sports center. Starting a new hobby is one of the best ways to meet new people and make new friends

M: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Today, I'm thrilled to talk about a well-known aspect of British culture— the traditional afternoon tea, which you had a taste of this afternoon. Since the early 1840s, this elegant practice has become a cherished custom across the United Kingdom. Now, you might be wondering where this delightful tradition takes place. Well, it's not limited to expensive hotels or grand houses. In fact, afternoon tea is enjoyed in a variety of settings, from small village tearooms to busy city cafes. It's a tradition that spreads across the whole society. You' ll find somewhere serving it whether you' re in London, Manchester, or even my own home city, York. But why is afternoon tea such a popular practice Beyond its tasty treats and delicious teas, it developed as a solution to the long gap between lunch and dinner. Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, is thought to have made this mid-afternoon treat popular. The idea was to fill the stomach and make it through the evening without feeling hungry. The British take their tea seriously, and this custom reflects the nation's long love for the drink. And I hope you find afternoon tea an enjoyable experience.
