The heating of Earth is pushing the number of polar bears to get smaller and smaller. According to a new study, they could die out in fewer than 100 years.
Polar bears are animals which live by eating sea seals in the Arctic ocean. As more and more sea ice melts(融化), their living places become to shrink. The loss(丧失) of sea ice began to be paid more attention at the end of the 1970s. Since then, sea ice that lasts for more than a year in the Arctic has decreased at a rate of 13% per decade(十年).
Studies have long shown that the growing loss of sea ice will lead to a dangerous situation for polar bears, but the new research shown in Nature Climate(气候) Change has given us a clear dying out timeline. Polar bears will be unable to live because of the climate change over the next several decades. The scientists believe they will completely die out by 2100.
"What we're found out is that, first, it will be very difficult for cubs(幼崽) to be born and live. Even if cubs are born, the mother polar bears won't have enough body fat(脂肪) to produce milk to bring them along through the ice-free season," said Dr. Steven Amstrup, a scientist of Polar Bears International, to the BBC. "Any of us knows that we can't go without food for a long time. That's a natural need for all humans and animals. "
The research also shows that, even in a situation where many countries have done a lot of work to save polar bears, several populations(族群) of polar bears will die out. But Amstrup strongly believes that the animals can still do whatever they can do to live if the climate change does not go on getting worse.
"We must show how dangerous the situation is, because we have to do something now to stop the worst of future problems," he said. "The way we're on now is not good enough, but if society can do something together, we will have time to save polar bears. And if we do, we will do great good to other lives on Earth, and to ourselves too. "
9.The underlined word "shrink" in Paragraph 2 probably means "____".
A.get bigger B.get lighter C.get smaller D.get heavier
10.According to the passage, polar bears will probably die out because ____.
A.sea seals in the Arctic Ocean don't have enough body fat
B.sea ice becomes less because of the climate change
C.the new research has given a dying out timeline
D.fewer animal scientists pay attention to them
11.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Why cubs are hard to be burn and live in ice-free season.
B.Why humans and animals can't live through without food.
C.Why mother polar bears can't produce enough milk for cubs.
D.Why Dr. Steven Amstrup does the research about polar bears.
12.What is Dr. Steven Amstrup's opinion(观点) on what many countries have done
A.What they have done works well, so polar bears will not die out.
B.What they have done doesn't do any good, so they need to change.
C.What they have done is useful but not enough, so they need to do more.
D.What they have done makes things worse, so polar bears will die out soon.

Like detectives, archaeologists use evidence to solve mysteries. Detectives look for clues to solve crimes. Archaeologists look for clues to help them understand how people lived long ago. In fact, the word "archaeology" means "the study of ancient things". One type of evidence used to learn about the past is pottery.
People have used pottery for thousands of years all over the world. Old pottery is usually found in pieces called "potsherds". Sometimes potsherds found in the same place can be put back together to recreate the original pot. Even in pieces, old pottery can teach us about the past. When examining pottery, archaeologists consider not only its appearance but what it was made of and how it was made. With this knowledge, they can get information about people's lives in ancient times. ①
Pottery is made by first adding water to a kind of soil called clay. When wet, clay can be formed into shapes. It is then heated. This hardens(使变硬) the clay and allows it to keep its shape. To make clay easier to shape and heat, potters(制陶工) use something called "temper". Different materials can be used as temper. An archaeologist can tell where a pot came from by the types of clay and temper that were used. Sometimes a pot found in one location might have materials from another place. ②
Some of the earliest pots were made quite simply. A piece of clay was hollowed(掏空) out and shaped into a bowl. It was then heated at a low temperature. The finished pot was rough(粗糙), and often undecorated. This type of pot might be used for cooking. ③
Later, coiled pots were made. These were made by first rolling the clay into a long snake shape. The coil was then wound(绕) in circles to form a pot. They were often decorated in different ways. These pots were heated at high temperatures. The higher the temperature, the harder and longer-lasting the pot. Further improvements in pottery-making developed in different times and places. ④
A pot's shape and decoration can provide clues about the past. Painted pictures might show events from daily life or from ancient stories. Archaeologists know certain shapes and styles that were common in different times and places.
Archaeologists study the differences in types of pottery closely. Because of their work, these daily objects can tell some of the mysteries of the past.
13.When examining pottery, archaeologists consider not only its appearance but what it was made of and how it was made. The word "examining" means "____" in English.
A.studying B.displaying C.searching D.discovering
14.Why are the words "potsherds" and "temper" written in quotation marks(引号) in Paragraphs 2 and 3

B.To make sure readers understand the words correctly.
C.To show that these words come from other languages.
D.To introduce the words that may be unknown to readers.
15.When is temper added to the clay
A.Before the clay is shaped.
B.After the pot is heated.
C.While the pot is being decorated.
D.When the clay is hollowed.
16.We can put the sentence "This can provide clues about how people traded or travelled. " in Blank ____.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
17.What is the main idea of this passage
A.People have used pottery for thousands of years all over the world.
B.Pots are decorated with pictures that show events from ancient stories.
C.Ancient pottery can tell about the lives of the people who made and used it.
D.Archaeologists look for clues to solve mysteries in different times and places.

There are 706 billion LEGO bricks (积木)on the earth, 7 LEGO sets are sold in every second, and more than 400 million people have played with Lego bricks. LEGO has already been a successful company in the world. Actually, there are many ups and downs along with its development.
Start from woods
The LEGO company was set up in 1934. The name comes from the Swedish "leg godt", meaning "to play well". Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the founder of LEGO, was a master carpenter (木匠大师), so it's not surprising that the first LEGO toys were made of wood. Theywere simple, such as wooden ducks. In 1942, the factory that made wooden LEGO toys was burned to the ground, which made Ole realize the disadvantages of working with wood.
Success—brick by brick
Soon Ole found out that plastic is a good material to make toys. LEGO started making self-locking bricks in 1949. But it wasn't until 1958, when the locking design was much improved, that sales were rising. Because of its quality and the endless creativity that it lets children have, LEGO achieved a huge success.
Overcome difficulties
In 2000, children began to spend more time playing video games. By 2003, LEGO's sales were down by 30%, and LEGO nearly went broke. The turning point appeared in 2004 when LEGO focused again on its bricks. And it also worked with films and televisions, like Star Wars. The Internet was used to build a LEGO group where fans show their love to LEGO collections. In 2015, it again became a name known by the world.

Katie was waiting for Gulliver's calls. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. "Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour." Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.
Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle's neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull's name, Gulliver, was given by him. The gull's size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone's attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller(婴儿车)on the floating dock(码头) when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie's stroller shake strongly. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye at Katie after that. Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn't watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" The gull's cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things.
This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she'd learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed eyes to hold in the tears. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" Katie sat up. "Katie! Katie!" Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. "How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks," Uncle Ralph said, "At least …it sounded like him. Strange, he was nowhere in sight." Katie remembered the feather. "I thought I heard him, too."

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer
My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on.
