Are you scared about moving up to senior high school It can be a new experience, but you shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide on how to survive the first week.
You’re not alone
Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat, you may not realise it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high school is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.

They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.

Other points

I come from a family that loves sports. My father coaches Little League baseball. My mother swims nearly every weekend. My brother is on his high-school basketball team, and I am the best hitter on my middle-school volleyball team. All of us have benefited (受益) from sports. One of the most common ways for kids to take part in sports is to join a team. Joining a sports team should be a school requirement.
Playing sports is good for both the body and mind. Everyone knows that exercise helps people stay fit. For example, swimming helps your heart work better and it also helps build muscle strength (肌肉力量). In addition, school athletes often have a healthy diet. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and avoid fatty foods because I must stay in great condition.
Being on a team allows students to enjoy a healthier social life. They often make more friends and can be some of the most popular kids in school. Since joining the basketball team, my brother has made friends with a lot of his teammates and has showed more interest in spending time with them.
Kids who take part in school teams sometimes earn college scholarships (奖学金). My brother’s friend, Justin, played football in high school. His family did not have money to send him to college. However, a college invited him to play on its team. The college is paying for him to go to school. Joining a team turned out to be one of the best decisions he had ever made. Now he studies at a great college and plays on its football team. Not every school athlete gets a college scholarship, but joining a school team makes it possible.
Although some people may not like the idea of forcing students to join a school team, its many benefits such as keeping kids healthy, new friendships, and possible scholarships cannot be denied (否认).
4. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2
A. Playing sports has health benefits.
B. Students should spend more time exercising.

D. School athletes must try to eat a healthy diet.
5. How did the author’s brother change after joining the team
A. He had a busier life. B. He got more chances.
C. He worked much harder. D. He became more sociable.
6. What can we infer about Justin
A. He is a good football player. B. He will be given a scholarship.
C. He is managing a school team. D. He comes from a wealthy family.
7. What is the author’s attitude to making students join school teams
A. He doubts it. B. He is in support of it.
C. He is worried about it. D. He pays little attention to it.
C
When your alarm clock rings and you drag yourself out of bed, you probably wonder: Why on earth does school have to start so early
Luckily, there is a new law to back you up — or better still, science.
A law in California, passed on Oct 13, requires that public middle schools begin classes no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.. The law will come into use by November 1, 2023.
Starting school at 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.
“The effect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults,” Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University, told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students’ mental health and increase the risk of being overweight and having other serious illnesses.
In the short run, students’ academic performances (学业成绩) should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a researcher at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep think quickly and clearly in class and get much more satisfying grades.
Some might say that asking students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across the whole state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期), which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11:00 p.m.. So when school starts at 8:00 or earlier, they can hardly get the 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime.
This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, “Generations of children will remember this historic day and thank our governor for taking action.”
8. What can we learn about the law from the passage
A. The law has not been put into practice yet.
B. The law will be passed by November 1, 2023.
C. The law is made by a university in California.
D. The law requires schools to start later man 8:30 am.
9. What can be inferred from Bhargava’s words
A. Not having enough sleep affects adults more.
B. How much sleep people need changes with age.
C. The new law is of lasting benefit to students.
D. Enough sleep makes sure that students are mentally healthy.
10. For better academic performances in the daytime, how long do teenagers probably need to sleep
A At least 10 hours. B. At most 8 hours.
C. About 8 hours. D. About 9 hours.
11. What’s the text mainly about
A. Absence of sleep can lead to health problems.
B. California is pushing back school start times.
C. A law to start the first school day later comes into use.
D. Teenagers’ biological changes affect their sleep patterns.
D
A vaccine (疫苗) that protects against one of the main common cold viruses has been shown to be safe and effective in a clinical trial and could be available by 2024.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) spreads so easily that more than 90 percent of people have experienced their first infection (感染) by the age of 2. It usually causes cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe illness in young children and older people. All around the world, about 60,000 children under the age of 5 and 14,000 people over the age of 65 die each year after developing the virus.
Developing vaccines against RSV and other respiratory viruses has been difficult because the respiratory tract (呼吸道) is a surface exposed directly to the outside world, says Kirsten Spann at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.
“It’s harder for antiviral antibodies (抗病毒抗体) in the blood to reach viruses in the respiratory tract, or even know they are there, because there is some physical separation,” she says.
In recent years, however, there has been rapid progress in finding new ways to improve immunity against respiratory viruses.
Several RSV vaccines are being tested in clinical trials, including one made by German company Bavarian Nordic. Its vaccine is designed to build immunity against RSV by exposing me body to five small fragments of the virus.
In a clinical trial involving 420 adults aged 55 and older, a single injection (注射) of the vaccine in the upper arm increased the levels of RSV-fighting antibodies inside the nose by three times and caused no serious side effects.
This immune response lasted for six months ---- enough to cover a winter cold season ---- and was restored with a booster shot at 12 months.
The results are promising, but more research is needed to see if the immune response is strong enough to prevent RSV infections, says Spann.
Bavarian Nordic is now planning a bigger clinical trial of its RSV vaccine that is scheduled to begin in 2021 and will involve more than 12,000 adults. If the results are positive, the company hopes to make the vaccine available by 2024. The firm plans to offer the vaccine to children too, but not until it has passed clinical trials involving people in this age range
12. What do we know about RSV
A. It is the deadliest cold virus.
B. It is a newly discovered virus.
C. It takes thousands of lives every year.
D. It mainly puts older adults’ lives at risk-
13. Which word can best describe the development of RSV vaccines
A. Creative. B. Dangerous.
C. Interesting. D. Challenging.
14. What was one feature of the RSV vaccine developed by Bavarian Nordic
A. It had no human subjects.
B. It had no serious side effects.
C. The immune response lasted for 12 months.
D. The immune response could prevent RSV infections.
15. What does Bavarian Nordic plan to do in 2021
A. Continue its clinical trial.
B. Offer its RSV vaccines to children.
C. Put its RSV vaccines on the market.
D. Follow the 420 adults in its early clinical trial.
