[2016·衡水中学三调]When I was a baby, I entertained you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask, “How could you?”—but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.
My housetraining was a long process, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks, runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend.
Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only family.
I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, “I know you will find a good home for her.” They shrugged and gave you a pained look. The children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three words that swept over my mind.
Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my pen (围栏), I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all a bad dream.
My beloved master, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you showed to me.

[2016·济南一中考试]In order to increase their job chances after college, Chinese students are turning to a special practice—Eiffel Tower nose jobs (鼻整形手术). The latest trend in plastic surgery promises to create a nose that is similar to the curve of the Eiffel Tower.
Surgeon Wang Xuming said: “We are influenced by the beauty of the Eiffel Tower. We are not content to just add something to the nose; we reconstruct it.” The surgery costs about US $10,000 and involves the enlarging of the nose using tissue from the forehead.
Hundreds of posters advertising the procedure are put up all over Chongqing city, where surgeon Xuming runs his private practice. They show a Western-looking woman with an almost-too-perfect nose, against an outline of the Eiffel Tower.
Interestingly, many young women in China are eager to achieve a western appearance, as they believe it will give them an advantage in the highly competitive job market. “Some students face a lot of employment pressure after graduation. If their facial features are good, they'll have more chances of finding a job,” said surgeon Xuming. “We've had students getting the Eiffel Tower nose; it's helped them a lot.”
Apparently, Chinese employers are quite particular about appearances and prefer attractive candidates. Some of them even go as far as putting height and weight requirements in their employment ads. Plastic surgeons across the country are reporting an increase in the number of students choosing beauty “improvement”.
According to a Mr Li, hospital manager at surgeon Xuming's clinic, most of their customers are female and the bill is taken care of by the family. “They usually come in with their mothers, and tend to be from well-off backgrounds.” he said.

[2016·遵义市联考]The oldest giant panda living in cage is set to challenge the world record for the animals' long life, with her age said to be the same as a human being at least 100 years old.
Hong Kong's giant panda Jiajia, whose name means “good”, will turn 37 this summer at the theme park Ocean Park, matching the Guinness World Records title for the oldest panda survivor in cage—Du Du, who died in 1999, aged 37.“It is rare for pandas to live to this age,” said Grant Abel, the park's director of animal care.
Born in the Chinese mainland in 1978, Jiajia was gifted to Hong Kong in 1999, along with another panda, to mark the second anniversary of the city's handover from former colonial ruler Britain. She weighs 80 kg and is considered to be in remarkably good health for her age, even though her eyesight is severely impaired and her hearing has grown worse, says Paolo Martelli, the park's chief vet. Jiajia takes medicines for high blood pressure and arthritis. She walks slowly and avoids the exhibition area of her fence, preferring to stay at the back and feast on several kilograms of bamboo shoots and leaves, besides fruit and high-fibre bread.
“The first thing I thought when I saw Jiajia was, Oh my God, she's so old, I'm going to be the one to bury her,” Martelli said.
“But actually it's been 10 years now. And she's had a few ups and downs, but she always manages to recover and look surprisingly good for years after that,” he said, adding that it was hard to predict her remaining lifetime.
A Chinese mainland government survey in 2014 estimated 1,864 pandas live in the wild, up 17 percent from 2003.
They also have an exceptionally short breeding (繁殖) season, with females fertile (可繁殖的) for just 24 to 36 hours a year, says a nonprofit body, Pandas International.

[2016·长春质检]When you've seen a couple fighting or having a pity argument, what is the first thing that comes in your mind? Probably you think that you will never allow arguments to set in your relationship, especially when you get married, or will never think to start one, but arguments seem to come naturally.
You argue about the brand of coffee, or what to eat at lunch, who will do the dishes, etc. Sometimes, more than that, but regardless of your reasons for the argument (or fight), fixing a troubled relationship and having a solution is very important.
Our partners are our most valuable fortunes. Companions provide a listening ear for our troubles, support for our dreams, and a safety net when we fall. They give us love, even when we are unlovable. They are and must be our friends.
Inevitably, though, sometimes we go through troubled periods and a solution should be sought through the following steps:
Address the situation. Admit to your partner that something is wrong and needs to be fixed.
Determine the problem. Together, discuss what problems we are facing. Be honest and let your honesty be in its proper place. Remember, you are talking to your partner, another half of yourself.
Apologize. We accept responsibility for our actions and seek forgiveness.
Refuse to blame. In addition, we must avoid defending ourselves. There could be a temptation to argue over who did what; however, the goal is not proving who is right but saving the relationship.
Begin repairs. Ask, “What can I do to rebuild our relationship?” The key here is to do willingly whatever is requested.
Commit to rebuilding. Immediately start investing your time, energy, and love in restoring the relationship. In order to have a good relationship with a partner who accepts and loves us, we must be willing to pay the high price of patching up the broken relationship. Walking away might seem easier, but in the long run, we would lose a valuable treasure.
本文论述如何修补破裂关系。
4.It is essential to fix a troubled relationship in that ________.
A.arguments seem to come naturally
B.arguments are not allowed in a good relationship
C.companions provide us with comfort and support
D.sometimes we inevitably go through troubled periods
答案:C 细节理解题。通过第三段可得知。第二段和第三段是相互呼应、前后衔接的。注意:in that意思是“因为”。
5.The solutions to fixing a troubled relationship do NOT include ________.
A.asking for forgiveness of the mistakes
B.bravely facing the existing problems
C.being honest when discussing the problems
D.trying to speak for ourselves to protect our rights
答案:D 细节理解题。A、B、C分别在第七、五、六段找到答案。D项与第八段avoid defending ourselves矛盾。
6.The author does NOT agree that ________.
A.our partners are our most valuable treasures
B.it's sensible to ignore the heated argument for a while
C.proving who is to blame has nothing to do with the solution
D.it takes time, energy, and love to rebuild the broken relationship
答案:B 观点态度题。从文章最后一段最后一句,可得知作者不赞同回避问题,因为长期这样下去,会失去生命中宝贵的财富。
7.The purpose of the text is to ________.
A.tell how to sensibly deal with troubled relationships
B.confirm that arguments are common in daily life
C.encourage people to invest love in a relationship
D.persuade people not to blame those who make mistakes
答案:A 主旨大意题。文章第一至三段是引入论述主题,都是为第四至十段“如何修补关系裂痕”作铺垫的。因此选A。其他选项过于片面,仅仅是文章提及的某个方面而已。

Treat others with respect. The golden rule, “Do unto others what you would like others to do unto you”, always holds true. If you cannot respect other people, do not expect them to respect you. __1__
Watch your attitude and change those ones that are hurting your relationship with others. If you notice people avoiding you or laughing at you behind your back, they are not showing you respect. __2__ By doing so, you will find out which areas you need to improve to get the respect you deserve.

If you think you can demand respect from others by force, you are wrong. __4__ Manipulating (操纵) others in order to gain respect is not only dangerous, but you are also making a fool of yourself. Humble yourself and work hard to become a respectable person. Your efforts will be rewarded by the respect people give back to you.

A.Be confident about yourself.
B.Evaluate your life and actions.
C.You earn your own respect by making things happen.

[2016·育才高三联考]Winter begins in the north on December 22nd. People and animals have been doing what they always do to prepare for the cold months. Squirrels, for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. Well, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect.
They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana. The scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut trees. The black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels. The black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests.
Rob Swihart of Purdue University did the study with Jake Goheen, a former Purdue student now at the University of New Mexico. The two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as compared to red squirrels. Gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. Gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. But they seldom remember where they buried every nut. So some nuts remain in the ground. Conditions are right for them to develop and grow in the following spring. Red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. Professor Swihart calls “death_traps_for_seeds”.
Gray squirrels are native to Indiana. But Professor Swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. Red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century.
The researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. They say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade Indiana. Jake Goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.

[2016·河南重点中学联考]A paralysed man has walked again thanks to an electronic device—a special brain cap, which connected his brain signals to electrodes attached to his legs. The 26-year-old man was able to control his legs and cover almost four metres using his own muscle power. This is believed to be the first time that anyone has used their own muscles, controlled on their own.
The man, who has not been named, lost the power of both legs after his spinal cord was completely severed in a motorcycle accident five years ago. His brain was still able to generate the thoughts needed to move his legs and his muscles were healthy, but the damage to his spine stopped the brain's signals from reaching his muscles. To get_round this, the man wore a cap connected with electrodes that captured his brain activity. This information was sent wirelessly to a computer and decoded before being transmitted to electrodes around his knees. These stimulated his muscles, allowing him to swing his legs.
He needed walking frame and his pace was unnatural, but he felt confident enough while walking to chat to the US researchers who developed the technology. The man had months of training to re-learn to walk, including brain training, which involved playing a video game while wearing the cap and just by thinking about moving them to control the movements of a character on screen.
This fired up the necessary part of his brain to move his legs and made him formulate the sort of thoughts he would need to control his own movements.
Paralysed people have been made to walk in the past, but this is the first time the patient has used their own legs rather than an exoskeleton—a battery-powered framework around the limbs.
British experts welcomed the breakthrough but said the work was still at a very early stage. Researcher Dr Zoran Nenadic said the new device proved promising, but they say many years of work remains.

7.How did the paralysed man control the character's movements on screen?
A.By using his own thought.
B.By obeying the orders of computers.
C.By imitating the human's movements.
D.By moving their muscles.
答案:A 细节理解题。根据第三段“The man had months of training to re-learn to walk, including brain training, which involved playing a video game while wearing the cap and just by thinking about moving them to control the movements of a character on screen.”可知,瘫痪患者运用意念去控制电脑屏幕上人物的活动,因此本题答案为A项。

●Etiquette of Gift Giving
Gift giving should be a happy, positive experience. When selecting a present for someone in Netherlands, don't purchase fancy kitchen knives or scissors. Giving sharp, pointy objects as gifts is considered unlucky. Be careful when presenting flowers to a friend or a business partner in Russia. Yellow blooms suggest cheat or a relationship break up. Traditionally, red carnations are placed on the tombs of the dead. Writing cards or notes while visiting South Korea, be mindful of your pen's ink color. Writing a person's name in red ink traditionally suggests that the person has passed away—an important point to remember when giving a birthday card.
●Eating Customs
Being early or on time is viewed as being rude, too eager or even greedy in Venezuela. If you are invited to someone's home for a meal, it's recommended that you arrive 10 minutes later than the requested time. When having a meal in Egypt, don't use the salt shaker (盐瓶). It's insulting to your host to spread salt on your food, which means that you find the meal terrible. Japan is a very polite nation, and their fondness for etiquette extends to the use of chopsticks. According to Japanese custom, if you're in the middle of eating, use the opposite end of your chopsticks to secure food from a shared plate. When doing business in Turkey, it's the custom for your host to pay for your meal. Requests to split the bill won't be accepted. If you would like to pay your fair share, Turks recommend inviting your host to a follow-up meal.

[2015·兰州一中期中]It is commonly believed that the earliest Chinese paper-cuts appeared during the sixth century. Some scholars believe it was even earlier. Legend has it that during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), Emperor Wudi was very sad after one of his favorite concubines, Madame Li, died. A Taoist priest, Li Shaoweng, cut a piece of hemp paper in the shape of Madame Li. When evening fell, the emperor's servants lit candles in his bedroom; the reflection of that paper-cut on the wall made the emperor think about his beloved concubine.
The Yuxian paper-cut is different from most paper-cuts produced in other regions of China. Paper-cuts from other regions are mostly cut—with scissors or knives—from single-colored paper, such as red or black paper.
There are four major procedures to making the Yuxian paper-cut: First, sketch the pattern on the draft paper; second, fasten the draft to the paper to be cut; third, use a knife to carve out the pattern; and fourth, dye (染色) the paper-cut with various colors.
Precise cutting skills are needed to make a piece of the Yuxian paper-cut, which highlights the craft maker's artistic taste and dyeing skills. That explains the following saying: “The successful making of a Yuxian paper-cut is 30 percent dependent on the maker's cutting skills, and 70 percent on the maker's dyeing skills.”
The traditional Yuxian paper-cut highlights two themes: Flowers and characters in Chinese operas. The paper-cut is particularly known for its vivid description of characters in various traditional Chinese operas. In October 2009, the art of Yuxian's paper-cut was added to the list of intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产) established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).

Recently our class had a heated discussion about the Winter Morning Jogging Activity in our school.__________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Recently_our_class_had_a_heated_discussion_about_the_Winter_Morning_Jogging_Activity_in_our_school. Opinions are divided on this topic.
Most students are in favor of this activity. They believe that the activity in winter can not only help improve physical health but develop a strong will. Besides, it's a good way to relieve stress. On the other hand, a minority of the students are opposed to it. They think the activity is too dull. In addition, there is so much heavy study and it's so cold outside that they would rather stay in the classroom to study.
As far as I'm concerned, I support the activity because it benefits us greatly. The modern society requires many qualities of us, so bookworms can't keep up with the times any longer.
