Over the last century, engineers all over the world have spared no effort to achieve the unachievable in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China serves as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles per day.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.

Aling Nenita is a 56-year-old mother to five children and a farmer in a remote community in the Municipality of Tumauini, located in the province of Isabela. The area has rich agricultural lands, but the farming families still experience hunger and food insecurity. Nenita’s husband is also a farmer. The couple are busy working on their farmland to provide for the needs of their children.
Not long ago, a typhoon attacked the area where Nenita lives, which caused heavy flooding that resulted in the massive destruction of farmlands, houses, and crops.
Nenita stood there still, her eyes filled with sadness, her voice trailing off (逐渐减弱) as she remembered how she nearly lost everything to the flood. It destroyed the ready-to-harvest crops in Nenita’s little farmland. “It was truly arduous for all of us,” she said. It was challenging for them to start again as they didn’t have spare money for seeds and other basic planting needs.
Luckily, the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) responded quickly and provided agricultural support to the affected areas in Isabela, preventing the most at-risk families from further sinking into hunger.
When CDRC reached Nenita’s community, she was one of those who received immediate assistance from the organization. You could see the happiness on her face as she lined up at the distribution site. Due to this project, she was given short-cycle vegetable seeds that she planted in her garden. She also received agricultural tools to help her farm more effectively and bags of fertilizers to make her garden fruitful.
As Nenita’s family gradually saw their planted seeds starting to grow, hope began to rise again. The agricultural assistance not only ensured a future harvest of enough food but also helped restore their hope in the face of future difficulties.

When Arvin Kuipers, who graduated from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2017 and loves Chinese culture, asks his patients to stick out their tongue so he can diagnose(诊断) their illness, many are confused.
Kuipers, 30, practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said, “In TCM I need to do face and tongue diagnosis. That’s strange for people in my country.” One elderly woman had been visiting him occasionally for advice, but her first experience with TCM surprised her. She had never experienced acupuncture (针灸) or any other TCM treatment. “She came in, and I examined her face and tongue,” said Kuipers. “I told the patient her kidneys were not doing well and that she wasn’t getting proper sleep.” The woman was shocked by his insight and asked if he had been spying on her. “Actually, it was easy to diagnose her condition when I saw the dark rings under her eyes. Her energy levels were also very low at the time.”
Kuipers opened his TCM clinic in September. Most of his work involves performing acupuncture, cupping as well as tuina — a TCM massage that patients in the West like the most, he said. In some cases he also gave his patients traditional herbal medicines.
Kuipers usually makes a cup of Chinese tea to calm his patients if they are nervous about the acupuncture needles. He also explains to them the meridian (经络) system, which is a central concept of TCM, yin and yang, and other concepts. “In TCM, good health requires balanced yin and yang, so practitioners not only pay attention to a patient’s illness, but also to his or her overall physical condition,” said Kuipers. “TCM is also a different culture and offers a new perspective, instead of being a curing method.”
As of early April, Kuipers has treated more than 200 patients, many of whom come to his clinic every week. “TCM does work, and works well. My patients really feel better with it, so I value it, and when my patients feel better I also feel better.”
28.What can we learn from the elderly woman’s story in paragraph 2
A.The elderly woman trusted TCM treatment in the beginning.
B.TCM is very different from the treatment in her country.
C.The elderly woman used to visit Kuipers a lot for TCM.
D.The elderly woman was shocked at her kidney s not doing well
29.Which TCM treatment is most welcomed by the patients in the West
A.Tuina. B.Acupuncture. C.Cupping. D.Herbal medicines.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Why Kuipers’ patients are fond of Chinese tea.
B.How Kuipers explains meridian system to his patients.
C.How Kuipers applies Chinese culture and treatments to patients.
D.Why Kuipers pays little attention to overall physical condition.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To praise Kuipers for his TCM treatments.
B.To stress the value of teaching foreigners TCM.
C.To show the popularity of TCM with patients in the Netherlands.
D.To tell the story of Kuipers practising TCM in the Netherlands.
One of the ocean’s noisiest creatures is smaller than you’d expect — snapping shrimp (鼓虾). They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening.
Aran Mooney, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, suggested that with increased ocean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap more often and louder than before. This could raise the background noise of the global ocean. “They make a sound by closing a claw so fast. This makes a bubble (泡泡) and when that bubble bursts, it makes that snapping sound,” said Mooney.
Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. “As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases,” he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cold-blooded animals, meaning their body temperature and activity levels are largely controlled by their living environment. “We can actually show in the field that not only do snap rates increase, but the sound levels increase as well.”
How the louder snapping shrimp would affect or benefit the surroundings remained to be seen. “We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.” There is also the possibility that the change of snapping shrimp affects machines humans use to discover mines, which could lead to unpleasant results.
32.What can we know about the snapping shrimp’s sound
A.It aims to protect the shrimp. B.It is important to the ecosystem.
C.It has different uses for the shrimp. D.It is hard to be discovered by other creatures.
33.How does Mooney do the experiment
A.By observing snapping shrimp in the field. B.By recording the snap rates in the lab.
C.By analyzing the way shrimp make noise. D.By comparing shrimp’s sound in different places.
34.What might Mooney research next
A.Other uses of shrimp’s sound. B.Influences of the noise on other creatures.
C.Means of communication among fish. D.Methods of stopping shrimp’s snapping.
35.Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A.Underwater World Is No Longer Quiet B.Small Animals Make a Big Difference
C.Warming Oceans Are Getting Louder D.Snapping Shrimp’s Noise Speaks Much

13-year-old Ryan was a lazy video game addict who always required the help of the housekeeper for everything. His father, Alex, noticed how spoiled(宠坏的) his son was, so he decided to set things right.
One day, Ryan was running late for school, but he was still busy playing video games. He was so distracted that he had no time to put on his socks and shoes, so the housekeeper did it for him.
“Dad, I’m ready. Let’s go!” he finally shouted, taking his school bag. Alex had always driven him to his school even though it was just a seven-minute walk from their home. For Ryan, that would seem like a hundred tiring miles.
That morning, to Ryan’s surprise, Alex asked him to walk to school instead. “What No! I can’t carry this heavy bag to school on foot. Please drop me off, Dad,” Ryan said. But Alex turned a deaf ear. “You’re a grown-up boy now, Ryan! Just walk. Get used to it,” he said.
Ryan had no choice but to walk along the road. He was out of breath when he got to the school gate. He came into his classroom and sat on the chair quickly. He was tired. He wasn’t used to walking, even for a few minutes. What a lazy and weak boy Ryan was!
When Ryan was still resting, he found a boy he didn’t know entering the classroom in a wheelchair. The boy was Mike, who was new to Ryan’s neighborhood and lived very close to Ryan’s house. He moved in with his grandparents recently after he lost his ability to walk in a car crash that killed his parents. Regardless of his extremely bad luck, Mike decided to be strong, optimistic, confident, brave and independent.
Although Mike was new in class, all classmates welcomed him warmly. Ryan never made a single friend all these years. Nobody liked him because he was lazy. The attention Mike got that day made him more upset.
The next day, Ryan begged his dad to drive him to his school again. But Alex just shook his head. Quite disappointed, Ryan had to walk to school,

21.A 22.C 23.D
根据Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge中“The 164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China serves as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. (这座164.8公里长的大桥建于2011年,是京沪高速铁路的一部分。)”可知,因为丹昆特大桥是京沪高铁的一部分,由此可知,火车可以从丹昆特大桥通过。故选A。
根据Hartland Covered Bridge中“Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.(虽然这座桥最初是没有屋顶的,但在1921年的维修期间,桥上覆盖了木制材料。)”
根据Jiaozhou Bay Bridge中“The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.(2011年,中国新建的胶州湾大桥被吉尼斯世界纪录评为“世界上最长的水上桥梁”,此前该头衔由庞恰特雷恩湖堤道保持。)”

根据第一段中“The couple are busy working on their farmland to provide for the needs of their children. (这对夫妇整日忙于耕作,只为养活膝下的孩子们)”和第三段中“It was challenging for them to start again as they didn’t have spare money for seeds and other basic planting needs. (因缺乏购买种子等基本农资的积蓄,他们重启生产困难重重)”可知,该家庭需拼命劳作,且无积蓄应对灾害,这说明他们勉强维持生计。故选D项。
25.词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Nenita stood there still, her eyes filled with sadness, her voice trailing off (逐渐减弱) as she remembered how she nearly lost everything to the flood. It destroyed the ready-to-harvest crops in Nenita’s little farmland. (Nenita呆立原地,眼中噙满悲伤,当她忆起那场洪水几乎卷走一切时,声音渐渐低弱下去。这场灾难摧毁了她小农场上那些本该丰收的庄稼)”可知,庄稼被毁导致Nenita一家的生活陷入困境,画线词意思应该是“艰辛的,困难的”,与Tough“艰苦的”意思一致。故选B项。
26.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Due to this project, she was given short-cycle vegetable seeds that she planted in her garden. She also received agricultural tools to help her farm more effectively and bags of fertilizers to make her garden fruitful. (得益于该项目,她获得了可在菜园种植的速生蔬菜种子。此外,她还收到了能提升耕作效率的农具,以及能让菜园硕果累累的肥料)”可知,CDRC为Nenita一家提供种子和农具。故选D项。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Not long ago, a typhoon attacked the area where Nenita lives, which caused heavy flooding that resulted in the massive destruction of farmlands, houses, and crops. (不久前,一场台风袭击了Nenita所在的地区,引发严重洪灾,导致大面积农田、房屋和农作物损毁)”和最后一段中“As Nenita’s family gradually saw their planted seeds starting to grow, hope began to rise again. (当Nenita一家看着播下的种子渐渐发芽,希望又重新在心中萌生)”可知,文章主要讲述了农民Nenita一家在洪灾后濒临绝境,后因CDRC的农业援助重燃希望的故事。因此,A项“灾难中的希望”既包含洪水摧毁农田的灾害,又突出CDRC援助带来的希望,最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

根据第二段“One elderly woman had been visiting him occasionally for advice, but her first experience with TCM surprised her. She had never experienced acupuncture (针灸) or any other TCM treatment.(一位上了年纪的妇女偶尔会去找他咨询,但她第一次接触中医的经历让她大吃一惊。她从未经历过针灸或任何其他中医治疗)”可知,老妇人第一次接触中医时感到很惊讶。她从未体验过针灸或其他中医疗法。由此可推知,中医与老妇人所在国家的治疗方法是非常不同的。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Most of his work involves performing acupuncture, cupping as well as tuina — a TCM massage that patients in the West like the most, he said.(他说,他的大部分工作包括针灸、拔火罐和推拿——西方病人最喜欢的一种中医按摩)”可知,最受西方人欢迎的疗法是推拿。故选A。
根据第四段“Kuipers usually makes a cup of Chinese tea to calm his patients if they are nervous about the acupuncture needles. “TCM is also a different culture and offers a new perspective, instead of being a curing method.”(如果病人对针灸针感到紧张,Kuipers通常会泡一杯中国茶来安抚他们。

根据第一段中的“They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening. (它们在水下环境中产生广泛的背景噪音,这有助于它们交流、保护家园和寻找食物。当足够多的虾同时发出噼啪声,噪音可以震耳欲聋)”可知,鼓虾发出的声音有助于它们交流、保卫家园和寻找食物,即有多种作用。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. (Mooney在实验室的水箱里对虾进行实验,并在不同的水温下聆听虾的声音,他发现温暖的海水和更频繁的鼓虾声之间存在着密切的联系)”可知,Mooney在实验室的水箱中用鼓虾做实验,并听各种水温里的鼓虾发出的声音。由此推知,他通过对比在不同地点鼓虾发出的声音进行实验。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.”
