During the last few years of his life, my Dad lived just up the road from me in a tiny home that used to belong to my Nana. He had been a widower for over 20 years by then, losing my Mom when she was only 55 years old. His Mom, my Nana, had recently passed away too. He was disabled and retired so he spent a lot of time alone.
Several times a week, though, I would take a walk up to his house. We would sit in the living room or on the front porch, sip tea and talk. It wasn't anything major. We talked about sports, cars, gardening, weather, and occasionally enjoyed a laugh over old memories. It wasn't anything too deep. It was just a simple sharing, a connection between a father and a son, an hour spent just enjoying each other’s company. Those afternoons remain some of my happiest time spent with my Dad. It allowed us to gently heal any old wounds we had given each other when I was growing up. It allowed us to silently give each other the time and love we hadn’t before. It allowed us to grow closer together before he left this world.
I know too that when my own time in this world is done, when my own mission on Earth is finished, I will get to spend another afternoon with Dad. We will sit, talk, catch up, and quietly enjoy each other’s company. We will share all the love and wisdom we didn't get to share while we were here. And we will make that afternoon last an eternity (永恒).
If there is one thing that I learned from those afternoons I spent with my Dad during the last years of his life, it is this: It is never too late to spent time with those you love. It is never too late to tell them that you love them. It is never too late to heal a relationship and mend a hurting heart. It doesn’t matter if they are here or in the heaven because love conquers even death. Begin today then! Spend an afternoon with those you love and those afternoons will become a gift of lifetime.

Sky Kurtz farms in the desert. The co-founder and CEO of Pure Harvest Smart Farms-located outside Abu Dhabi, where temperatures regularly top 113°F-and his team use the challenging environs (周围地区) to trial new crops and technologies that have the potential to change farming in climate-challenged areas. Pure Harvest also provides produce to supermarkets and restaurants in Dubai and across the region using less water, which is important in one of the driest regions of the world.
Kurtz founded Pure Harvest Smart Farms in 2017 with his co-founders Mahmoud Adi and Robert Kupstas. The founders’ research and technological innovation led to the development of a proprietary(专营的)Controlled-Environment Agriculture(CEA) system-a combination of high-tech greenhouses and vertical farms that provides a stable year-round climate. The first crop of tomatoes was planted in August 2018 and harvested in October. The company’s original farm is now its Research & Development (R&D) facility, and Pure Harvest has expanded its facilities in the UAE to 16 hectares of growing area. It also operates a 6-hectare farm in Saudi Arabia, and is developing a 6-hectare farm in Kuwait.
It now produces 14 types of leafy greens; two varieties of strawberries, with seven more being developed; and almost 30 varieties of tomatoes. With limited availability of local, seasonal produce, the UAE has typically imported much of its food, often by air, which comes at a high cost, both economically and environmentally. And while they are more expensive compared with locally grown seasonal produce, company says its fruit and vegetables are typically up to 60% cheaper than products imported by air of comparable quality.
Their vision fits in with a wider goal for Dubai to become more self-sufficient, and they have a desire to use their R&D to help deal with the impacts that climate change is already having on the food industry in the Gulf region and beyond. Kurtz hopes the company’s data-driven technology can become a model for other regions that are experiencing climate difficulty.
8. Why did Kurtz found Pure Harvest Smart Farms
A. To use the challenging region. B. To save water during farming.
C. To test new crops and technologies. D. To supply local agricultural products.
9. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The expansion of R&D facility. B. The harvest of organic tomatoes.
C. The establishment of CEA system. D. The development of Pure Harvest.
10. What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A. Food imports in UAE are by no means costly.
B. Pure Harvest never pursues its produce diversity.
C. The company’s produce enjoys its own advantages.
D. Local seasonal produce in UAE is in sufficient supply
11. What does Kurtz expect of the technology
A. An approach to earning high profits. B. A pattern for areas with climate stress.
C. A case of improving scientific research. D. A model for the high-end market in dry areas.
D
Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic If you’re the former, somebody’s probably told you at some point that you’re a left-brained person, and if you’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person
If there’s no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.
When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial. After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical” The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves.
12. What can we learn from the passage
A. A free-spirited artist is a right-handed person.
B. The left half of the brain deals with analytical work.
C. Different personalities are determined by the brain.
D. The idea of which half of the brain is dominant is a fiction.
13. Which is a possible reason for people believing left-brained or right-brained dominance
A. Roles of different brain regions.
B. Distinctions between different people.
C. The tendency to classify people.
D. The conclusion from daily phenomena.
14. What does the underlined word “congenial” mean in the last paragraph
A. Reasonable. B. Accurate.
C. Random. D. Pleasing.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Science of Different Personalities
B. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance
C. Links Between the Brain and Characters
D. Ways to Tell Right-brained and Left-brained People

Tablescapes (桌面景观) are creatively designed table arrangements or decorations for the center of a table, which show or highlight a specific object or collection. Usually, it’s dinner tables that are transformed into tablescapes. ____16____
Tableseaping allows people to express their creativity by adding a personal touch. This is often achieved through the use of valuable collections or specialized themes. ____17____ Themes can be based upon a particular event, season, hobby, or collection. Finding a suitable theme for tablescape displays depends on personal preference as well as the style of its surroundings.
____18____ Each item within a tablescape relates to other elements around it. While the objects in tablescapes do not necessarily have to match perfectly, they should stay in harmony with each other or make each other more attractive.
When it comes to organizing the selected objects for tablescapes, the easiest method is to think in terms of levels. ____19____ The other relatively unimportant ones include the spaces both above and below the table. Including similar or repeated items in all of these levels will help pull everything together.
When the appropriate tablescape design is carried out, the surrounding area should fit in. The highlighted table arrangement should stand out in a pleasing manner rather than looking like a mess. As everyone’s view can be different, not all tablescapes will hold the same appeal. ____20____ It’ll create a comfortable appearance regardless of someone else’s personal taste.
A. But items like bookshelves can also make it.
B. The most important level is the tabletop itself.
C. Tablescapes normally have three different levels.
D. That’s why balance and harmony are so important.
E. Once a theme is chosen, collect proper related items.
F. Themes are especially important when designing tablescapes.
G. However, maintaining a balance within the tablescape theme is necessary.

It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to come prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia’s best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.
