Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863 in Michigan. At an early age, he showed an interest in mechanical (机械的) things. In 1879, sixteen-year-old Ford left home for the nearby city of Detroit to work.
In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company of Detroit. Then, he became the Chief Engineer in 1893. This gave him enough time and money to pay attention to his personal experiments.

The company began building the world’s largest industrial center along the banks of the Rouge River during the late 1910s and early 1920s. By September 1927, all steps in the producing process took place at the vast Rouge Plant, characterizing Henry Ford’s idea of mass production (大批量生产).

Among the relics (遗物) of Mao Zedong, there are two pairs of old reading glasses, one without the left leg and the other without the right. How do you put on a pair of glasses with only one leg The answer is: wear them lying down. In his later years, Mao was in the habit of reading lying down. With his reduced vision (视力), he had to wear glasses. But no matter on which side he lay, one of his temples (太阳穴) was always painfully pressed. So the optician’s (眼镜商店) owner came up with a simple but practical idea: remove one of the glasses’ legs.
Had it not been for his love of books, there might not have been two pairs of one-legged glasses. Anyone who has been to Mao’s residence (住处) was shocked by the vast collection of books everywhere. There were books on the bed, dining table, coffee table, even in the hallways and bathrooms. The Fengze Garden in Zhongnanhai, where he used to live, was like a small library, with 36 shelves against the walls.
During the war years, it was not easy to get a few books. With each transfer (转移) of troops (部队), Mao was willing to simplify belongings, except for books. He had a large bag specially made for carrying books. No matter how hard it was, he would always keep the bag.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Mao no longer had to hide and read with anyone. Whenever he went out, even if it was only for a day or two, he took some books with him. Although he suffered from eye diseases as an older man, he ignored his doctor’s advice and read secretly. When the medical staff took away his books, his tears came out, “For me, reading is resting. I just love reading books all my life…”

61.During the war years, what was his special bag made for

After facing great challenges, 30-year-old Spanish motorcycle racer (摩托车手) Marc Marquez has made a successful comeback. On March 16, the six-time world champion (冠军) won his second race of the 2025 MotoGP season at the Argentina Grand Prix.
Born in Cervera, Spain, in 1995, Marquez asked his parents for a bike before he turned 4 years old. In 2013, he started his MotoGP journey and won a world championship in his first season. Between 2014 and 2019, he was at the top of the sport, winning five out of six championships.
At 1.68 meters tall, Marquez got the nickname (绰号) “the Ant of Cervera”. This was due to his small size but amazing ability to control a 160-kilogram motorcycle at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. He also pioneered the “elbow down” riding style, where riders keep their elbows close to the ground to go faster.
Just as Marquez was about to reach bigger goals, a serious accident in the 2020 MotoGP season broke his right arm. Since then, he’s been working hard to get better from a number of crashes (撞车) and injuries (受伤). During his recovery (恢复), Marquez’s team had to take the wheels off his bike and hide them so he wouldn’t try to ride. He’s not afraid of the crashes that nearly ended his career. “Maybe sometimes I’m taking too much risk but I cannot ride a bike worrying about the crashing,” Marquez told The Guardian.
With two wins in a row, Marquez has made a strong start to win his first world title (冠军) since 2019. “I continue fighting because, in the end, my love for racing is more than what I was suffering,” he added.

After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered (发现) by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (1845-1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones (骨头). Later, Rontgen took a photo of his wife’s hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray It’s because Rontgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery (外科手术).
Rontgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’t think. I investigated (研究).” Rontgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents (专利权) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb (电灯) believed that every failure (失败) was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged (泄气), because every wrong try is another step forward.”
Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his amazing actions and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep guiding China’s future.
Huang was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw that our country was in a very hard situation. He wanted to use his knowledge (知识) to make our country stronger, so he studied really hard.
In the 1950s, China started the difficult job of building nuclear submarines (核潜艇). Huang Xuhua joined without thinking twice. During that difficult time, the job seemed impossible to finish. But he and his team never gave up. While they were working, they met many problems. For example, building a nuclear reactor (反应堆) was very hard. Without help from other countries, they had to do research by themselves. Using simple tools like calculators (计算器) and rulers, they worked hard to calculate and test. To keep the job secret (秘密), they cut off communication with the outside world, even their families.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. China became one of the countries that could make nuclear submarines. Huang Xuhua didn’t stop there and he kept helping to improve submarine better. His hard work brought him many prizes, including the “Medal of the Republic” in 2019.
Now, as we remember him, we find his life story is encouraging. We, especially the younger people, should follow his example, face difficulties bravely, and work hard to make China stronger.
