Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10-month-old sister alone. Anyway, my sister was still sleeping in her room. In fact, I had the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on TV, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelf. I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper Well, of course it went on fire, but it wasn’t the little flame (火焰) I thought, and I couldn’t blow (吹) it out. I threw it on the floor, and then luckily got my dad’s boots (靴子) and put out the fire.
I thought I was safe until there was a big hole on the floor of my room. A few hours later, my mum came home. She smelt the smoke as soon as she came into my room. She dropped the shopping bag, luckily for me, over the hole. I thought this meant she would never see it. However, after running around the house checking for a fire, she, of course, picked up the bag and saw the hole. Next, I was grounded (关禁闭) and in trouble for months. Now the hole was still there, reminding (使想起) me of what I did.
7.How old was the writer when he wrote the passage

It’s often believed that only grown-ups can make a difference. Is it true Tea Vogue interviewed some teenagers across the world. Get ready to be inspired (启发).
16-year-old Michael began using social media to cheer up teenagers of his age to follow their dreams on his baseball blogs. Michael talked about sportspeople and how they would face their challenges.
Lesein, 14 years old, first learned about climate change when he was twelve years old. His home country, Kenya loses about 29,650 acres of forest each year. With a deep love of soccer, Lesein started Trees for Goals, planting a tree for every goal he scored in a match. Later the school’s soccer and basketball teams all followed him. In 2019, almost 1,000 trees in forests outside of Nairobi were planted. Now the government provides trees for them to plant.
Alexis Lewis, a 15-year-old inventor designed a simple wheelchair with bamboo to help poor people who need to transport children many miles to hospitals. Another invention of his is a special mask which can be thrown through a window of a smoke-filled building to people inside. Alexis said, “People are dying in a fire accident because they can’t be saved in time. Another reason why I want to invent something is that I love physics and I want to improve technologies with it.” Alexis also told our reporter that he wanted children to know that inventors can be everybody who’s ever tried to solve a problem.
These young people are certainly shining examples to show you’re never too young to make a difference.

第一节 简答
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
People sometimes think “what if something goes wrong ” It’s normal to have these “what-if” thoughts. We need to understand this kind of thoughts and deal with them, so that we will be less worried.
Worrying about the future is a common thing in life. Sometimes, everyone will think about what will happen if things don’t go as we want. For example, “What if I make a mistake ” or “What if people laugh at me ” These “what-if” thoughts are all about bad results. When we spend a lot of time thinking about bad things that might happen, we are imagining the future as a disaster. Thinking too much about “what-if” makes us feel anxious and worried. For example, we may feel sad and it’s hard to focus on what we are doing.
There are different ways to help ourselves. Angela McMillan suggests making an “if/then” plan. She says, “For example, if you have to speak in front of the class, then you can take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that you are ready and it’s okay. Or if a social event is too noisy and you feel uncomfortable, then you can go outside for a few minutes.” We can also ask ourselves how possible it is for something to really happen.
Angela McMillan points out that most of our worries don’t actually happen. She says, “Remember, these are just thoughts. The bravest thing we can do is not to let worry control us.” We should try to pay attention to what we are doing.
Being angry with ourselves will make us feel worse. So we should be nice to ourselves.
19.How can people be less worried about “what-if” thoughts
20.How will we feel if we think too much about bad results
21.According to Angela McMillan, what can you do at a noisy and uncomfortable social event
22.Will the things we are worried about always come true
23.What do you think of Angela McMillan’s suggestion

Dear Ms. Know-Heart,
I’m writing to you because I’m really upset about my seat in class. I really want to sit with my close friend, Lin Hao. But I was refused by our head teacher, Ms. Wang. She decides where each student will sit in the classroom and we have no choice.
Here is what Ms. Wang said about the seats choosing on the first day of this term. “We cannot let you choose your own seats because it’s important for me to arrange (安排) the seating to make sure that everyone can see the board and hear the lessons clearly. This arrangement also helps to have a focused learning environment in class. We don’t allow self-choosing of seats to ensure that every student has the same chance to sit in different parts of the classroom. This way, no one feels left out or favored. What’s more, why not try to make new friends with your desk mate ”
But that doesn’t work for me! I’ve been sitting with a classmate for about three months. Still, we are not making friends. What should I do

To stop more teenagers from becoming addicted (沉迷) to the Internet, the Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部) sent a letter on April 20, 2018 to all parents in China. It calls on them to pay more attention to their children’s online activities. Nowadays more and more teenagers become addicted to the Internet. A 17-year-old boy from Guangdong Province nearly died after playing online games for 40 hours. It shows how bad things can get when one becomes addicted to the Internet.
The MOE also sent a notice to primary and middle schools, asking them to manage students’ Internet use. From now on, schools will pay more attention to their students’ Internet use, as well as their use of mobile phones. Schools have been told to teach students how to avoid violent (暴力的) online content (内容). As long as students show signs of being addicted to the Internet, they can get help from their teachers to give up their addiction.
To make better use of the Internet, experts suggest that students should limit (限制) their screen time to less than 1.5 hours a day. They can develop healthy hobbies, like reading or playing sports in their free time.
Many other countries are also taking action. The Australian government has called for schools to confiscate (没收) mobile phones during school hours. And in South Korea, there is a law that children under the age of 16 are not allowed to play online games between midnight and 6 am.

Some young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents, because they think that their parents are too strict with them, and they are given too many rules but never given a free hand. Parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they seem to forget how they felt when they were young. For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can deal with any difficult things. Elder people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead and don’t like their plans to be changed.
If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right (权利) to do what you want to do.

As time goes by, shopping online becomes a new way of shopping which is getting more and more popular. Many people like to shop over the Internet these days.
Why do people enjoy shopping online First, they can shop at home at any time. Second, there are more choices for shopping on the Internet. People can find what they want and even buy something that they can’t get in the stores in their cities. Third, it saves time. People just click (点击) the mouse to get what they want. So they don’t have to go to the stores in person. Fourth, usually the things on the Internet are cheaper than those in the stores.
But online shopping is not always good. People can only see photos when shopping online. When the products arrive, people may find they are not the same as those in the photos online. Sometimes network payment (网络支付) is not safe. And receiving things is slow—they have to wait for a few days. What’s more, for those who enjoy walking around different stores, shopping online may make them bored.

Jia Meng used to keep a diary in Chinese. But one year ago, the 14-year-old girl began to write her diary in English, because Jia found her mother was reading her diary secretly. Jia’s mother is not the only mom who reads her child’s diary. The results show that 40% of parents read their children’s secrets. That’s why, like Jia, many teenagers try to find ways to protect their privacy (隐私). Wu Lei keeps a diary, too. But he doesn’t write it on paper. He writes online which he thinks is very safe because his parents “know nothing about the Internet.” Lu Huan said her parents always secretly listened to the talk between her friends and her on the telephone in their room. To solve this problem, Lu asked her parents to buy her a mobile phone. “Parents want to know what is going on in their children’s lives,” said Shao Xiazhen, a teenage expert (专家) in Beijing. “But sometimes they go about it the wrong way.” She suggested to teenagers that talking to parents is a better solution (解决). “Don’t always hide your secrets. Sometimes it can be very difficult to predict (预测) the result of your exams, whether you are in a secondary school or even a university. This is probably because exams are one of the most anxious things in education for students. Whether a student is confident in their abilities or not, exams can be often both predictable (可预测的) and unpredictable. If the worst does happen, failing the exams can be one of the most disappointed experiences for students, especially when they were not expecting to fail their exams.
One way to deal with exam failure is to talk to people. Talk to your family, talk to your friends, discuss with them what you can do to get good grades. One thing you must remember is that failing your exams is not the end of the world. Exam failure is one of the many difficulties you’ll have to overcome (克服) in your life, and there are always possibilities to learn from failure. After all, I’m sure most of you have heard of a famous saying, “Failure makes you stronger.” Actually, it is really true. It gives you an understanding of what it means to fail, to lose, to receive a negative result that you may not have expected to get. In addition, from failure, you can learn why you fail. Then, next time, you can avoid this mistake, and can get better grades.

Should Teenagers Go out with Friends on Weekends
Recently, the TV station held a discussion show about whether teenagers should go out with friends on weekends. Most parents think teenagers should stay at home instead of going out on weekends. They think teenagers should go over lessons at home, and going out with friends wastes a lot of time. But children have different opinions. They think they should go out on weekends, because it makes them relaxed.
In my opinion, teenagers should be allowed to go out with friends on weekends. They can play sports with friends during the weekends, which helps strengthen their bodies. Besides going out to make more friends can help them improve social skills. Of course, I think teenagers are supposed to talk with parents about it patiently and set them at ease.
All in all, I support the teenagers’ opinions. But remember a good conversation can surely help.

Recently, I’ve read a piece of news about a 12-year-old boy who spent 120,000 yuan shopping online. It made me think about a question: Should teenagers be allowed to shop online
I don’t agree that teenagers must keep away from online shopping. First of all, few teenagers spend so much money online. Most of them just buy school things or something else for daily use. In addition, instead of going to one shop after another, teenagers can choose all kinds of things online easily. It’s a good way to save time.
Of course, some rules should be followed. When we shop online, we should only buy what we need, such as school things or necessary clothes. We shouldn’t spend money on online games. The changes between me and my parents
By Li Ming
There are many changes between me and my parents.
Three years ago, my parents and I often had little communication. They were very busy with their work and seldom spent time with me. However, things have changed gradually. Nowadays, my parents make an effort to spend time with me every day. They ask about my studies, my friends, and my hobbies. We also have regular family meetings where we discuss and solve any problems together.
I feel very happy about this change. I enjoy the time we spend together, and our relationship is much closer than before.
