I started dancing when I was 11 years old.It was all I wanted for my 11th birthday and I promised my parents I would never ask for an MP3 player or iPhone or even a car ever again if I could start ballet(芭蕾)classes. If they couldn't put me in classes because it was too expensive,I asked for ballet in a box,a video and books to follow. My parents decided that maybe they should make real ballet classes happen.
I was the tallest in my level 1 class—most of the other students were 7 and 8 years old.I stuck out like a strange and foolish thumb(拇指).Nine months later,I mastered pointe (芭蕾舞中足尖站立的姿势)and a year after that,I was invited to join my studio's Company Two and I really started to get serious about ballet.A secret hope began to grow.My instructors and my parents kept telling me that I had talent.I was tall for my age and had all long arms and legs;ballet just felt right in my body. When dancing,I felt so free that I was oblivious of my technique.Being able to move in such a different way made me free and easy.
I don't still like to look in the mirror, honestly.Seeing myself made me uncomfortable;I thought I wasn't pretty and I didn't look as graceful (优雅的) as I felt but the studio mirror is one of the main tools a dancer has to use and eventually I had to face myself. It wasn't easy.
When I was 5,I went through a very painful experience that changed me.I became terrified of just everything in life as a result of the harm I experienced from a teenage boy of our neighbor. To this day, even with lots of comfort,I still struggle with that fear and shame. But when I dance,I feel free.
What I didn't know at first was that ballet would also be healing. It has been five years since I started ballet, during which I have learnt how not to live in fear and shame.I will never stop dancing.

Millions of New Yorkers and visitors ride the city's subways and other trains each day.The public transportation system offers more than just a trip, however. It also has one of the most extensive public art collections in the world, with many of them under city streets.
Some people call it New York's“underground art museum”.It includes more than 250 works of art. They are meant to brighten everyone's ride around the city.
There is a huge painting of the night sky on the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal.New Yorkers have been looking up at that artwork for 111 years. In the nearby Grand Central Market, you can find a large, crystal light fixture, which was completed by sculptor Donald Lipski in 1988.Other artists include new ones and the long-famous ones such as Roy Lichtenstein and Sol Lewitt.
Sandra Bloodworth has directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's arts program since it began in 1985.But actually, it really began much earlier, and some of it even dates back to the time when the subway first opened in 1904.
For the past 30 years, artists have been asked to make works that relate to city life or to the neighborhood around a train station. There are coastal scenes at stations near the Atlantic Ocean.Native plants and flowers can be found in a garden scene in Brooklyn.
Alejandra Acosta, a visitor from Colombia, said,“I think it's nice to see these kinds of things when you're walking in spaces like the subway stations that seem a little bit dull. They don't have a lot of decorations.”

(2016·孝感高三调研)Energy drinks are as harmful as drugs and should be banned from schools, according to a British government adviser.
Drinks such as Monster, Red Bull and Relentless combine sugar and caffeine (咖啡因) in such high quantities that children are becoming hyperactive (过度活跃的) and difficult to control. Some 500ml cans contain the equivalent of more than 13 teaspoons of sugar and 160mg of caffeine—which is about the same as in four cans of cola.
Yesterday, government adviser John Vincent warned,“Energy drinks are effectively another form of drugs. It has a hugely damaging effect on children's ability to concentrate, how they feel and it is having health effects.”
Evidence from teachers and pupils is that children who drink these cans may report feeling sick, shaky and dizzy.Claire Duggan, a school public health adviser, said some children report feeling unwell after downing the drinks.
Ian Fenn, headmaster of Burnage Media Arts College in Manchester, has banned the drinks following requests from staff.
He told BBC,“Staff came to me and said at a school where we are very conscious about the nutritional value of what students eat.We can't allow boys to bring in drinks that are really unhealthy for them and consume not one, but two or three.”
Some children even choose to have an energy drink for breakfast rather than a bowl of cereal.A survey published recently found that one in 20 teenagers goes to school on a can of energy drink.
A British Soft Drinks Association spokesman said,“We are clear that energy drinks are not recommended for children, and we want to get that message across to young people and parents.”

(2016·长春统一检测)Pioneering front-row White House journalist Helen Thomas died at age 92 after a long illness.Thomas covered 10 presidents over nearly half a century, and became a legend in the industry.
She was always at White House news conferences—sitting front and center—where she frequently annoyed government spokesmen with her pointed questions.
Thomas began covering the White House for United Press International when John F.Kennedy became president in 1961 and was a fixture there until her retirement in 2010.
In a written statement, Obama called Thomas a “true pioneer” and said she kept the presidents she covered—including himself—on their toes.
Thomas, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants, was born in Winchester, Kentucky, on August 4, 1920.She was one of nine children.Thomas was raised in Detroit, where she attended Wayne State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1942.
In describing her job, Thomas once said,“I've never covered the president in any way other than that he is ultimately responsible.”
Thomas embraced the freedoms of a columnist with vigor (活力).No question seemed off-limits for her.Colleagues remember her as a genuinely fearless woman who asked the toughest questions of presidents, no matter their party.
In January 2009, as President George Bush was preparing to leave office, Thomas aimed her editorial guns at him and his administration. In a commentary, she slammed (抨击) Bush for what she considered his failings, including leading the country “into a senseless war against Iraqi a calamity still under way as he leaves office almost six years after the invasion.” She considered him “the worst president ever.”

I sat with a friend a few weeks ago as she scrolled through photos of her college freshman daughter on her phone. She asked me,“Doesn't she look happy? She looks OK,right?”Her daughter had recently had a difficult time, which was now over, but her mother—like all mothers would—still worried, sometimes, that something might be wrong.
For generations of parents, sending children off to college meant knowing little to nothing about how their children were doing.Other than the occasional letter or call from a dorm room phone, children who had left home were mostly unseen and heard from infrequently.College kids could get into all kinds of trouble and their parents would know nothing about it until Christmas vacation or summer break.
Now,of course, that's not at all how it is.Parents of college students can spend hour upon hour examining photos on Instagram or Facebook of their children. They look for hints of sadness in their eyes, the way their clothes fit, whether they're really smiling or just sort of smiling.
However,I don't think it's necessary.College is a time of intense personal growth.Pain is a necessary lesson for the emotional leap from childhood to adulthood.Mothers shouldn't be able to see photos in real time that capture their children when they're at their worst—whether because of too much alcohol or too little happiness.
The blessing of social media is the ability to connect at any time with your child,no matter where he or she may be in the world.Facebook,Instagram and the rest are keeping our helicopters flying long after they should have landed.Maybe it would be better for all of us to be a little less aware of the state of our children's lives once they leave home.Better for the children, and certainly better for the parents.

Technical advancement has brought with it a series of changes. In a short span of time, this change has been so big that we now see significant impacts of it on our language.
English,in particular, has experienced deterioration and suffered considerably because of the increasing influx(涌入)of text messages that have surrounded our younger generation. While communication is beneficial at one end,the English language is being brutally murdered due to this culture of shorthand of texts.A number of critics have argued that the culture of texting is increasingly encouraging misspellings among the youth, keeping them away from the value of English language and its original form.
As the trend of shorthand texts continues,we now see a more disturbing pattern emerging in schools and educational institutions. The trend has already seeped(渗透)its way into our emails and workplace communications.Too many individuals are replacing words such as“you”with“u”.As informal style slowly seeps into formal writing,it is becoming more difficult to teach students how to write in proper English without sacrificing the essence of the language.
While guesses for these changing and disturbing trends have been highlighted repeatedly over the past few years,it is only now that we have seen statistical evidence. The average SAT score for students in the U.S.has reduced by a total of 9 points since the year 2006.This means that less than half of the students who took the test were considered suitable for college and high school level English writing.
What we need today is a more focused strategy that will allow students and the younger generation to use social media and texting as a form of further strengthening their English language skills. With greater parental controls and more focused curriculums,we might be able to prevent the deterioration of English language in time.
