At 12, my father decided to take me a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable attractions in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.
We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our understanding of what is honestly a good subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.
We reached the end of the line and felt frightened when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came up to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then got on it with us.
Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer(换乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and shook our hands gently at the stop. Then with his quiet way, he got on the train to return the way he had come.
What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to make them change their minds with this story.
4. What happened to the author and his family on the train
A. They failed to get off the train at the right time.
B. They couldn’t understand the signs of the train.
C. They had a quarrel about where to go first.
D. They found it hard to live in the countryside.
5. How did the man help the author and his family
A. By paying for their train tickets.
B. By leading them to where they wanted to be.
C. By inviting them to travel together.
D. By showing them the return way.
6. What impressed the writer most about the old man
A. His honesty B. His kindness C. His gentleness D. His happiness
7. What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the passage
A. To explain an unexpected problem.
B. To list the unbelievable attractions in Paris.
C. To show the importance of learning a foreign language.
D. To share an unforgettable foreign experience.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared (害怕的) on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stay for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say hello to kids you know and the new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing old friends can make the first day an exciting one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of shoes. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack(打包) them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.
8. The underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably means “________”.
A. discuss B. experience C. welcome D. start
9. How do you probably feel if you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school
A. Nervous. B. Lucky. C. Happy. D. Upset.
10. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. What to know about a new school.
B. How to prepare for a new school.
C. What to do on your first day of school.
D. How to make friends on your first day of school.
11. According to the passage, you usually do everything on the first day of school except ________.
A. introducing yourself
B. learning about the school rules
C. making new friends
D. going over your new lessons
D
There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.
However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.
Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial (细菌的) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F.
Potentially harmful bacteria grow most rapidly at these temperatures.
Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.
However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won’t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.
Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftover s can become breeding grounds (滋生地) for dangerous bacteria if they’ re left out too long and can make people sick.
“It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two- hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.”
12. Which temperature most leads to the growth of harmful bacteria
A. Below 40 degrees F. B. Between 39~40 degrees F.
C. Between41~135degrees F. D. Above 135 degrees F.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge
A He is for it. B. Neither for nor against it.
C he is against it. D. He doesn’t tell us.
14. What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers
A. Dividing them into small parts.
B. Storing them in the fridge right away.
C. Waiting until they cool down completely outside.
D. Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. When to Pack up Leftovers B. How to Prevent Bacterial Growth
C. To Cool Food Outside or in the Fridge D. A Good Idea to Store Food in the Fridge

The winter of 1820 was a cold one for the Lincolns. It snowed nearly every day and the snow was high around their little farm house.
Abe was just a boy, but he had to help his father Tom around the farm. He looked after the house, milked the cow and prepared the dinner. It was hard work, and there wasn’t much fun for him and his brothers and sisters. Abe liked reading, but there was no book there. Abe was not happy. He was sad most of the time and seldom talked or smiled.
Mrs. Lincoln, Abe’s stepmother, really loved the boy. She noticed the boy’s silence and was concerned about him. She tried to think of ways to make Abe happy.
One day Mrs. Lincoln got up early in the morning. She took all the pennies from a small box. “I’m going to town tomorrow,” she said.
“You are going to town ” Tom asked. He was surprised. “That’s a long way. You see, the snow is thick. What are you going to do in town Can’t you make it another day when the snow stops ”
“It’s a surprise. And I must go there tomorrow!” she said with a determined voice.
“Do you want Abe or me to go with you ” Tom asked his wife the next day.
“No, don’t worry, honey! I’ll be all right,” she said and went out of the house.

47. One possible answer
It was late in the evening when she got home. The whole family was waiting for her. It was still snowing hard outside. Seeing the white frost on his stepmother’s face, little Abe took a cloth and helped to wipe it off gently. Dinner was ready and Abe’s brothers and sisters went to lay the table. But Mrs. Lincoln was not in a hurry. She carefully took out a package from her bag and started to unwrap it.
Abe’s eyes became very wide. He fixed his eyes upon the package and watched eagerly. As Mrs. Lincoln tore the package open, a book suddenly came into sight. Little Abe couldn’t help crying out in joy! He ran to get it and found it was an old story book. He couldn’t wait one more minute and began to read it. Soon, he was so absorbed in reading the book that he totally forgot the meal on the table.
