In a remote rainforest on the Hawaiian island, Bernie Krause kneels silently, adjusting a pair of microphones covered in leaves. Around him, all lives sing in harmony. But Krause isn’t just listening; he’s recording an ecosystem’s acoustic (声学的) DNA — a soundscape that may soon disappear. For over 50 years, this 84-year-old
bioacoustician has travelled to Earth’s most threatened habitats, recording what he calls “nature’s grand orchestra (管
弦乐队).” His mission To preserve the planet’s acoustic heritage before human noise silences it forever.
Krause’s journey began unconventionally, In the 1960s, he was a session musician for Motown and played synthesizer with the band Beaver & Krause. But a key moment came in 1968 when he recorded a forest for an album. “I noticed each creature occupied its own acoustic space, like instruments in an orchestra,” he recalls. This revelation birthed his life’s work — soundscape ecology (声景生态学).
Armed with recording equipment, Krause has since captured over 5,000 hours of sound from 15,000 species
across every continent. In 1988, he recorded a forest alive with birdsong. After selective tree cuttings, which woodcutters claimed “didn’t harm wildlife”, he returned. Everywhere he looked, the grass seemed unchanged. But actually, it was damaged. Over 50% of species’ voices had disappeared. “The silence,” Krause says, “was louder than any chainsaw (锯子).”
For Krause, sound is more than data; it’s emotional memory. He recalls a recording of a pack in Algonquin Park.
When he played it back, a young wolf approached his speaker. “It recognized its family’s voices,” he smiles. “That connection-between species, across the acoustic web-is what we’re serving.”
As earphones pick up a rare Hawaiian honeycreeper’s call, Krause shuts his eyes. “Listen,” he whispers. “That bird might not sing here in ten years. But on my hard disk, it’ll sing forever.”
Why did Krause record ecosystem’s acoustic DNA
To prevent habitats from danger. B. To protect natural sounds at risk.
C. To search for man-made noises. D. To promote. his grand orchestra.
What contributed to Krause’s lifelong work
The job of being a musician. B. The work for his own album.
C. The vivid sounds from forests. D. The creatures’ sound positions.
What can be inferred from Krause’s work in 1988
Nature can repair its damage quickly. B. Sound space can be destroyed unseen.
C. Species loss can be caused unnoticed. D. Human noise can break silence easily.
What does Krause imply in the last two paragraphs
The basis for his research. B. The passion for his survey.
C The limitations of his study. D. The values of his recordings.
C
For more than 3,500 years, the remains of the Xiaohe people lay undisturbed in Xinjiang until they were unearthed in 1979. Among the treasures dug up was the oldest preserved cheese in the world, spotted around the
remains’ neck.
Now a team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences reports the first genetic (基因的) analysis of the cheese. Their results give us a vivid account of a rich Bronze Age culture that exchanged animals with other neighbouring peoples and may have helped spread cheese around East Asia, reflecting their cross-cultural
communication. Just why they were buried with the stuff, though, remains imperfectly understood.
During their analysis, the team identified the DNA from a goat whose milk went into the cheeses, before comparing it with 185 previously sequenced goat genes. The genetic profile of the Xiaohe goat was similar to that of goats belonging to ancient Eurasian Steppe people, meaning the Xiaohe may have learned cheese-making from them. All the Xiaohe cheeses would have been produced by drying kefir, a milk-based drink made with bacteria (细菌)
such as Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens. The team, therefore, sequenced the DNA of that one bacterium and compared
it with 15 modern varieties in order to identify its place within that species’ family tree. Their analysis showed that it belonged to a subspecies that could have spread with kefir-making customs from Xinjiang to regions including Tibet. The team suspect that the cheese was an attractive alternative to raw milk. But it is possible that it was the kefir drink, rather than the cheese, that was the main attraction, says Paul Kindstedt, a cheese chemist and historian who was not involved in the research. It holds about 1% alcohol by volume. People in Mongolia today use kefir to make
milk-based alcohol; the Xiaohe may have done so too.
“Ancient-cheese DNA analysis-of which this may be the first example-could reveal secrets about numerous other cultures. There are dairy remains on 7,000-year-old European pots, for example, and cheese may also have been used in ancient Egyptian burial practices,” says Dr Kindstedt.
What can be inferred about the Xiaohe people in paragraph 2
They preferred an undisturbed life. B. They interacted with other cultures.
C. They conducted odd burial practices. D. They exchanged animals for cheese.
Why was the DNA of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens studied
To track the cheese-making origin. B. To clarify the cheese-making steps.
C. To figure out its structure. D. To dig into its superiority.
What is Paul Kindstedt’s opinion on the cheese
It came from Mongolians’ finding. B. It may be a substitute of raw milk.
C. Its appeal was possibly-from kefir. D. Its attraction was affected by milk.
How does the author emphasize ancient-cheese DNA analysis’ significance
By explaining a concept. B. By giving a definition.
C. By providing statistics. D. By quoting an expert.
D
The rapid development in artificial intelligence or AI, has had the effect of bothering and transforming socioeconomic activities across industries ranging from health, trade, education and even the improvement of climate change.
However, as industries and governments across the globe are ready to take advantage of these possibilities, experts added that Africa needs supportive policies and improved facilities to seize the limitless opportunities of AI to quicken its development. Moreover, the experts said that the continent should not wait to have the rules in place in order to welcome the technology.
Fayaz King, an expert in digital public facilities from Zimbabwe, said AI has the potential to contribute up to
$1.2 trillion to the African economy by 2030, representing a 5.6 percent increase in the continent’s GDP by 2030. Alfred Ongere, an information technology expert and the founder of Artificial Intelligence Kenya, a nongovernmental organization, said it is of much importance to manage AI in African countries because it can potentially be used in spreading misinformation, fake news, and disinformation. However, policymakers should first improve the state of the AI ecosystem.
Despite arguing against proper control by African governments, Ongere said that it is still significant to protect consumers from the risks caused by the uncontrolled application of AI on the continent. He appealed to African governments to develop an AI road map or policy paper without forcing rules that could potentially damage a promising sector. “AI-focused solutions should solve real-world challenges such as rural development and financial crisis. More importantly, efforts should be directed toward ensuring the commercial viability (商业可行性) of these
solutions,” Ongere said.
King said that managing AI in Africa should deal with moral considerations such as data privacy, prejudice and transparency ( 透明性 ). As the use of AI continues to expand, it is likely that more countries will follow in introducing such regulations. “The question of management, especially in the African context is that Africa is not
mature to have complete and sound rules on AI because Africa lacks the level of technology development that exists in developed nations.” King said.
What does the author want to stress in paragraph 1
The effect of climate change on AI. B. The AI’s influence on various fields.
C. The breakthroughs of trade industry. D. The rapid development of education.
Why is it important to control AI in African countries
It can be illegally spread. B. It may affect ecosystems.
C. It can be improperly used. D. It may ruin economic state.
Which of the following statement would Ongere agree with
AI should focus on actual problems. B. AI can avoid ethical considerations.
C. AI can help people draw up policies. D. AI should protect users’ data privacy.
Which of the following can be the best title for the text
Africa’s Shortage of Policies In Rules
She Future of AI technology In Africa
Africa’s Calls to Control AI Grow Louder
AI’s Contributions to the African Economy

Participating in practical labor (劳动) can bring children joy, skills, and inspiration, and it is an ability that will benefit them throughout their lives. 16
Parents often wonder when their children can start performing meaningful labor tasks. Studies suggest that children as young as four can begin to complete simple chores. This means your little one could develop a passion for hands-on work sooner than you think. 17 Just keep developing their interest in practical activities, and
they’ll soon be participating enthusiastically and learning valuable life skills.
18 The most suitable types of labor for children, from my experience, are gardening and simple
cooking. These activities can greatly improve children’s patience and sense of responsibility. In the garden, children can learn important values like perseverance and care for living things. So, let children get their hands dirty; they’ll grow while having fun.
Technical labor activities for children are becoming more popular. 19 These tasks introduce basic
engineering and problem-solving concepts in an engaging way. They involve colorful materials, interesting tools, and satisfying results. They can develop children’s interest in practical sciences. If you want your child to develop these skills, try introducing some of these activities.
Practical labor is children’s best teacher during their development. Both gardening and technical activities, with their unique benefits, can guide kids to explore the real world and develop practical intelligence. 20 Let’s
encourage children to labor more!
It can also teach adults valuable life lessons.
But every child develops skills at their own pace.
The secret is that they combine study with doing.
Some activities can truly change our perspectives.
A love for hands-on work is a precious gift for kids.
Participating in those activities can broaden their experiences.
Certain types of practical work offer significant benefits to children.

Honesty Strengthening the Friendship
Linda complained, “I can’t believe Ms. Carter gave us another essay due Friday,” turning to face Clara, who was busy tucking (塞) a note into her notebook. Clara looked up, with her eyes lighting up with that familiar eagerness Linda had come to both rely on and dislike. “I know! But maybe we could work on it together My mom’s making pizzas tonight-you could stay over.”
Linda hesitated. The truth was she’d already promised her cousin to go shopping, but the thought of disappointing Clara made her feel guilty. “Oh, I can’t,” she lied. “I have to look after my little brother. He’s got a fever.” Clara’s forehead creased (皱眉), “Oh no! Is he okay Do you need me to bring over soup or something My grandma is good at making chicken soup.” “No, he’ll be fine,” Linda replied, hurrying toward the exit. She didn’t
miss the way Clara’s smile gradually disappeared as she walked away.
It wasn’t the first time. Last month, when Clara had tearfully expressed she was struggling with her parents’
breaking up, Linda had nodded along without really paying attention, checking her phone for texts from the popular crowd. When Clara had noticed and asked if something was wrong, Linda had lied her battery was dying-even though she’d just charged it that morning.
Today, as Linda went shopping with her cousin, her phone made a noise. It was a message from Clara. “Hey, I just wanted to say I made more soup than needed. Tell me if you want me to bring some over.” Nervous and guilty, Linda typed, “Thanks, but my dad already got food to take home. Maybe another time ” Then she turned off her phone and forced a laugh as her cousin held up a fashionable sweater.
At night, Linda thought about the empty soup pot in Clara’s kitchen. She’d always brushed off Clara’s kindness with half-hearted lies. A heavy feeling settled in her chest.

Dear Chris,
I’m Li Hua, the president of the Students’ Union. We’re all excited about the upcoming teachers’ talent show
and appreciate your active preparation by practicing Chinese songs. However, some students in nearby dorms have told me that your evening practice until late at night has affected their rest, as they need to get up early for classes.
To balance your practice and everyone’s rest, could you please adjust the time to before 10:00 pm
Alternatively, the school’s music classroom is available in evenings, which might be a reasonable option.
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Linda didn’t know whether she should apologize to Clara. The lies felt like weights in her stomach-each one like
a sharp reminder of how she’d taken Clara’s kindness for granted. What if Clara refused to forgive her The thought of losing the only person who’d always been there, even when Linda was too busy chasing popularity to notice
Clara’s kindness, made her chest achy. But she knew she couldn’t keep hiding behind half-truths. Clara deserved honesty, even if she might be hurt.
At dawn, she headed to Clara’s house, hands shaking. When Clara opened the door, her eyes were soft. Linda’s
throat tightened. “I’m sorry,” she whispered with her voice breaking. “About the essay, about your mom…about everything. I lied because I was scared of disappointing you, but I only made it worse.” Clara stepped aside, silent. She said finally, “I’m just glad you told me the truth. That’s all that matters.” Upon hearing the words, Linda hugged Clara with tears blurring the view. Suddenly, she came to realize that some lies fade away but honesty can deepen their friendship.
