Researchers from Norwegian University of Science and Technology have looked at the
connection between physical activity and brain health. The findings show that the brain
definitely benefits from physical activity.
The research evaluated evidence from both animal and human studies. It points out that
our body mechanisms (like blood flow, immune function, brain plasticity, and the
release of protective chemicals in the blood will weaken with age, which plays an important
role in the development of dementia )However, physical activity can be one effective
way to help slow down the process, reducing the risk of dementia and promote healthy brain
aging.
Today, the recommendation is at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity(中等a强度)or
75 minutes of high intensity each week.Fully 50%to 70%of the population does not manage
today's activity recommendations.
However,based on the reality.Atefe R.Tari,one of the researchers,suggested that
microtraining (going from no activity to adding brief strength training into everyday life)be
included in the recommendations from Norwegian health authorities. He noted that exercising
much less than what the current recommendations can provide great benefits-as long as the
intensity of the training is high.
"Our review shows that even small amounts of high-intensity activity-similar to fast
walking where you can't sing-can reduce the risk of dementia by up to 40%.A little is better
than nothing. We believe it's time for health authorities to make some adjustments on how
important exercise is for the brain-it may be what encourages people to get started,"says
Tari.
In a commentary in Nature Medicine,American researchers even argued that public
guidelines need to be updated. As life expectancy increases, dementia is becoming a major
public health challenge.Since there is still no cure, prevention is crucial."Exercise is cheap.
accessible and has no side effects. It should be considered a first-line measure to preserve brain
health,”Tari says
28.What is the main finding of the research
A.Regular physical activity helps cure dementia.
B.It is difficult to follow exercise recommendations.
C.High-intensity exercise is less effective for health.
D.Exercise protects aging brains against dementia.
