My anger exploded (爆发) a few weeks ago.
It started when we drove to Aunt Jen’s farm. My little brother Tex 1 his toy, so we drove home to pick it up.
Just a few minutes later, I realized my cookies for Aunt were still in the kitchen. I spent a whole afternoon making them.
“I’m afraid we don’t have 2 ,” said my mom. “Take them next time!”
I didn’t say a word and just pushed down my feelings, 3 my mind kept going over all those little things on the way.
Spending a lovely day on Aunt Jen’s farm, we set off for home. As soon as we got home, Tex ran inside for 4 .
“I’m thirsty too!” I said, following 5 .
“Hang on, honey,” Mom called me. “Give me a hand with these bags.”
6 all the feelings I kept inside poured out. “It’s not 7 !” I shouted. “Tex gets to do everything he wants, but I just can’t!”
“Wow! You’re having strong feelings,” Mom said. “I want to make sure I really understand 8 you are so angry about. Let’s have a family 9 ” I didn’t think it would help, but I agreed.
“I know I’m older, so I have to be responsible (负责任的) for 10 things, but I wish things could be…fairer!” I said first in the meeting.
Dad touched his head, “Sorry, honey. We didn’t know you were 11 so many feelings.”
“Let’s try this!” Mom 12 paper and pencils. “Write down the unfair things this week—even tiny ones!”
We wrote quietly. My paper said, “No one sees when I do things right.”
“Ah!” Mom read my 13 carefully. “How about starting a ‘Good Job Bottle’ You can add a stone into the bottle if you help others. When the bottle is 14 , that means a pizza-movie night!”
“That sounds nice. I can give it a try,” I said. The others also agreed.
After the meeting, I felt lighter. It’s OK to let yourself get angry. But don’t 15 to speak it out. Just speak up right away when you need to.

About a year ago, our family dishwasher broke. My dad had just left for a work trip, and my mom was too busy with endless housework. So I offered to do the dishes 56 to help her out although I had never washed the dishes alone before.
At first, doing the dishes greatly made me 57 . The dirty dishes piled up there, and I didn’t even know where to start. The food left-overs seemed to be 58 on the plates with glue. The slippery (滑滑的) dish soap made it challenging for me to hold the dishes. I was always worried that I might 59 them. Moreover, there was much homework waiting for me so I was always 60 to get them done.
Slowly, something 61 me as I did the task. I began to notice the simple 62 while washing the dishes. I took my time with each dish. The warm water flowing over my hands became a 63 feeling. I started to enjoy the rhythm of the task. I started with the dinner plates. I learned to 64 the plates and washed the bottom. Then I moved to the bowls 65 and finally the cookers.
Now it was easy to know if the plate I was washing is my grandfather’s—it would have 66 left. My younger brother was opposite—there was always food left. I could 67 tell the difference if just one bowl was not put in the same order as before.
When we did finally get the new dishwasher set up, I still continued washing the dishes myself after dinner, 68 my mother greatly.
Every single day, I stand in that same place, washing the dishes one by one. That 69 itself has become not only a task but a source of unexpected calm. For those 15 minutes each day, I 70 slow down, allowing myself to forget about the worries. My mind, along with my eyes and hands, pays all my attention to this one simple task. I truly lose myself in the peaceful rhythm of this common housework.

I, Alana Ames, was going to tell everyone that I was grown up and in control. 79 when I opened the oven, the cookies turned to be a huge, gluey (黏糊糊的) puddle.

“Great job, Alana,” Dad said, finishing his second cookie.
Would Caleb tell my parents how close I’d been to disaster I wondered.

I 85 and tried to hide my surprise at my discovery: big brothers aren’t always so bad.

Sometimes, families can be hard. Arguments happen. Things get sad. People get upset. 231 they stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs. I’d say we’re probably one of the more argumentative families out there.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the didi of the family. We grew up in 232 a small house and often didn’t have a whole lot of money. My mum and dad argued, pretty much all the time, over just about 233 . My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue too. But 234 I got older, I always chose to be the mediator, the person tries to look at both sides of the argument and tries to bring the arguing parties together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn’t have said 235 to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys, we all love each other. It’s just been a bad day,” I’d say to try and 236 things down.
I learned much growing up in an argumentative family. Patience, 237 , and the knowledge that sometimes things just don’t go your way. We all make mistakes. We all say things 238 we wish we haven’t. The key is to try and understand. Put yourself in the other person’s 239 and stay calm. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If something is wrong, it needs to be addressed and sometimes, we 240 it. But as long as we can reflect and look at things with an attitude of care and responsibility, we can weather the storm and help each other out.
