An Mingzhong, a 12-year-old boy from Sichuan, used to be lazy. In his own words, he rarely did any housework. But now, things have changed. Washing the dishes, cooking and making the bed...all of these tasks have become part of his daily life.
This big change is the result of a new program at his school. Starting from last term, Dazhou No. 1 Middle School has made housework part of its students’ homework to improve their life skills. At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help them keep track of (掌握……的进展情况) their performance. Some of the tasks are quite specific (具体的), such as cleaning out closets, washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother’s Day, students are asked to prepare gifts for their mothers.
Wang Yixi, 13, has learned several life skills through the program, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she tried to overcome (克服) her fear and complete her cooking tasks. At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother gets after doing housework every day. On Mother’s Day, she made a cake for her mother to show her thanks. “I’ve begun to better understand my parents and I want to help them more,” she said.

“Yeah, Mom and Dad have so many kids, so they don’t have to do anything.”
That’s right, my children. You now know your place in the family. Snacks and TV, here I come! I don’t need to clean a thing in my house. Most of this is because I have older kids now.
We put our chores into two groups: everyday chores and paid chores. Here are everyday chores in our home: clear the table and chairs, do the dishes and sweep the floor after each meal and take out the rubbish. We also pay our kids to do chores. These chores are usually our weekly cleaning tasks, such as washing the car and cleaning the living room.

When I was a child, my family had many rules, such as house rules, out-in-public rules and so on. But they were all good rules, like “Don’t run in the house.” How I wish I had listened to that rule! I could remember that on a Saturday night, I was hurt badly and was taken to the hospital. I had a wound on my leg and it didn’t disappear although 17 years had passed.
My parents were very strict. I hated that when I was young. But now I really thank their rules. Their rules have made me become a graceful lady (优雅的女士).
Now, my husband and I are thinking about having our family rules. In fact, we’ve had some rules. For example, we don’t go to bed at night with unresolved conflict (未解决的矛盾). I really like this rule, although sometimes we have to stay up late because of that.
When thinking about our family rules, we want to make it fun to follow the rules. Instead of “don’ts”, we come up with many “dos”, such as “Share freely”, “Tell the truth” and “Put others before yourself”. We want our family rules to be fun, and we can get education from rules. Some people think only school children don’t agree with their parents, however, it is not true. 52 If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. 53 Go some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. 54 If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解).Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊重) to them. 55
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life. 56 It is worth having a try!

Not forever, just for a week. I’m warned that you are developing some bad habits. You keep your phone with you all the time—you even check the basketball scores at the dinner table. Many parents do not let their children do housework because they want their children to focus on their studies. This thought must be changed. 67
Housework builds children’s responsibility (责任).
Children are a part of the family, so it is clear that they also have responsibility for doing housework. 68 The adults who did housework at age 3 or 4 are likely to be successful in their mid-20s because they have more responsibility for other areas of their lives.

Another thing I like to do is to watch movies. I make some popcorn (爆米花) and enjoy the movie on the sofa.
Music always makes me feel good, so I like to listen to music. But I don’t like to sing songs because it’s difficult for me. Sometimes, I like to dance to the music around the room and pretend (假装) I’m performing for a large group of people. It’s so much fun!

①In many homes, there are rules that manage daily life. These rules ensure harmony (和谐), safety, and disciplines (纪律) in the family. In my house, there are several important rules. Let’s take a look at some of these rules.
Bedtime Routine
②Every night, bedtime must be followed strictly. In our house, lights are turned off at 9:00 PM. This rule makes sure that everyone gets enough sleep and have a good rest for the next day. My younger brother often tries not to follow, but he is reminded gently but firmly that the rule cannot be changed. Although he may not like it, he is forced to be in bed by 9:15 PM every evening.
Chores and Responsibilities
③On weekends, each family member has specific chores to complete. The dishes are washed by my sister after every meal. She may not enjoy it, but it is her responsibility to keep the kitchen clean. My job is a bit more fun. I am allowed to choose which room to clean each week. However, I am also responsible for taking out the trash on Mondays and Thursdays. Even our dog has a job. He is trained to pick up his toys when ordered.
Screen Time
④In our house, screen time is carefully monitored (监管). Homework is completed before any TV or video games are allowed. This means that we are not allowed to watch TV or play video games until all homework is finished. On week days, only one hour of screen time is allowed per day, and it is usually spent watching educational programs or playing educational games. Weekends are a bit more reasonable, but even then, screen time is limited to two hours per day.
Family Dinner
⑤Family dinner is a sacred (神圣的) time in our house. Every evening, dinner is prepared by either my mom or dad. We all sit down together, and stories are shared, and laughter is often heard. It’s a time when we are encouraged to talk about our day and any problem we might be facing. Although decisions are not always made during dinner, it’s a great time for us to get closer to each other and support each other.
Outings
⑥When it comes to going out, we have to be back home by 10:00 PM on weekdays and 11:00 PM on weekends. If we are late, we are not allowed to go out for a week. This rule makes us safe and lets us know that our parents care about where we are and who we are with. For special outings, the time for coming back home depends on the situation.

She came up with a reward system (奖励制度) for her two sons at home and posted it online. She made a list of housework and gave them money for every task they completed. The list of housework included cleaning up the house and putting away their toys for 50 each, studying for 150, and even not fighting with each other for 10 to 15. She opened a “mini shop” at home for her kids. They could buy snacks at her mini shop which was open.
Because of this system, her children are now more willing to do their housework. Her post has got over 15,000 likes and has been shared over 27,000 times online. Many parents have begun to imitate her. They use the same way to teach their children.
