In many Western countries, many children do chores to get pocket money. They usually start to do this when they are about ten years old.
School students have to do homework and study for tests. They don’t often have much free time on weekdays. They often do chores on weekends.
Young kids only do easy chores so they don’t get much money. But it’s enough. Many of them only want to buy candy and candy is cheap! They often help do the dishes, sweep the floor, or feed the pets. When they get older, they want to buy more things. They want things that are more expensive than candy. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the family car, cut the grass, or cook meals.
Some jobs are a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn how to use a lawnmower (割草机) or how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.
5.How do the children in many Western countries get pocket money
6.When do the children usually begin to do chores

8.How many kinds of chores are mentioned (提及) in the passage
9.What’s the advantage (好处) for kids to do chores

We often hear a parent shout, “Tidy your room!”. It’s thought that an unmade bed and messy (杂乱的) floor can make other family members stressed.
A study found that mess and managing it are “central and important to happiness” while a messy living space make people more stressed, especially in women. On the other hand, some untidiness may be the sign of creativity. So what do you think, is it OK to have a messy bedroom Recently, this topic has caused hot discussion online.
Yes — it’s not a big deal
It is important for children to have their own space where they can be themselves. By allowing children to keep their room as they want, parents are helping children prepare for later life. Also, clearing up your room is a waste of time and there are more important things to focus on, like work and hobbies. Anyway, there is a great chance of getting the room messy again.
No — messiness leads to bad feelings
Research shows that in a messy room, you may feel worried and can’t focus on tasks like homework. A tidy room can improve clear thinking and calmness. It also means you have more space for activities and won’t lose things. What’s more, mess might be dangerous — you can fall down or knock something onto the floor and break it.
In my opinion, we can live according to our own willingness if we live alone. However, keeping our space clean and tidy is an important life skill. It is unfair (不公正的) to other family members if our room is messy as it is part of their home too, and we should respect that.

Each family has its own set of rules that guide the behaviors and actions of its members. However, people hold different opinions on family rules. Here are some of their ideas.
Agree Family rules help to create good order within my family. For example, I have made a set bedtime rule for my children. The purpose of doing this is to make sure that children get enough sleep, which is important for their development. Regular mealtimes also mean healthy eating habits and family communication. —Fiona’s dad Family rules can teach me to be responsible for myself. Whether I’m doing homework, cleaning my room, or taking care of my own things, I follow the rule “Finish your own tasks on time”. This is an important skill for my later life. —Peter
Disagree Too many rules can harm a child’s creativity. For example, if a child is always told what to wear or how to behave well, they may not be able to voice their own opinions. —Binbin Rules cause family troubles. I used to have trouble getting along with my son because I didn’t allow him to hang out with his friends on weekends. But now he is allowed to make his own decisions, which helps him to be more independent and brings us a better relationship. —John’s mum
Every coin has two sides. It’s important for families to make proper rules that suit their needs and help their children grow into responsible people.
20.Who has made a rule for the children to go to bed on time
21.How do family rules teach Peter
22.Why did John’s mum use to have trouble getting along with her son
23.Do you agree with the rule “Finish your own tasks on time” Why or why not

It’s Friday evening. My daughters sighed when I gently took the iPads away from their laps. One by one, our screens were turned off. We lit the candles and sat down to have a big meal.
We call it our “Tech-Free Day” which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Now most friends know they will not be able to contact us by using computers or mobile phones for 24 hours.
I first understood the importance of “Tech-Free Day” in 2008, when my father had got brain cancer. Some days he would have only one good hour, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be with him. When I looked after my father, I turned off my mobile phone.
Soon after that, my husband and I decided to turn off all the electronic things for one full day every week.
During our “Tech-Free Day”, time slows down. Our Saturdays now feel like mini-vacations. We drive cars or ride bikes. We work in the garden, play board games and cook meals with our kids. I feel like a better mother, wife and person.
Keeping a balance between the good and the bad of technology is important for my family. The technology helps us share knowledge and funny ideas all over the world. But the technology also takes something away from us. When we stay up late at night linking from website to website or sending messages, we click again and again until we have been overloaded.
Now we’re rushing into the time full of high technology. We should pay attention to what we are doing online and when we should go offline.
I will always remember the most important thing in my family: Tech-Free Day.
25.When is “Tech-Free Day” in the writer’s family
26.What did the writer and her husband decide to do after her father got cancer
27.What change does “Tech-Free Day” bring to the writer in Paragraph 5

Are there any arguments (争吵) in your family How do you deal with such problems
Sometimes, families can be hard. Arguments happen. People get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the younger brother of the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn’t have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued, pretty much all the time, over just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue too. But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator, the person who tries to look at both sides of the argument and tries to bring the arguing parties together to make peace.
I learned much growing up in an argumentative family. Patience, understanding, and the knowledge that sometimes things just don’t go your way.
We all make mistakes. We all say things we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and stay calm. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen.
If something is wrong, it needs solving. Sometimes, we get angry about it. But as long as we can reflect (反省) and look at things with an attitude (态度) of care and responsibility (责任), we can solve the problems and help each other out.
30.How many children are there in the author’s family
31.What did the author learn in an argumentative family Give one example and use one word to express.
32.What does it need doing if something is wrong
33.What do you think of this author Write 30 words or more.
Why Learning a New Language Is Good for the Whole Family
Ever thought of making language learning part of your family’s activities Learning a new language together can have unexpected emotional benefits for the whole family.
Combining (兼顾) family time and language learning time is a great way to have more quality time with your family. Learning a new language as a family can be a fun group activity. Everyone loves a game night or movie night. You can play games like Bingo, using vocabulary from the target language. Or maybe you have a particular vacation destination (目的地) and reconnect with those you love.
Language is all about communication and connection. Learning a new language brings family members closer because they talk to each other all the time when learning. All you have to do is change to your new language and practice with your family members whenever you want—no classroom needed. Telling family stories with what you have recently learned is a good place to start, which could inspire questions and additional conversations, and even create a familect—secret words and phrases shared only among the members of your family.
If your family is big on gardening, make labels (标签) together for your plants and tools. Making fun labels in your target language together can also help you connect with loved family members. It opens up more opportunities like family contests. You could surprise each other with notes on pillows, inside dresser drawers—any place your family will find them. Using these words later recalls these family memories.
Each family is really its own little unique social world, and that world is being built through language. The power of language learning lies in its ability to draw people together.

35.Why does studying a new language bring family members closer

Bob understands how hard his mother works, and he always helps her with some housework. Though he does too much housework, his mother is still strict with him. There are some family rules for Bob.

He is allowed to keep a parrot, a cat and a dog, but he must feed them often and give them water by himself every day. After school, he is allowed to play with his pets for a short time.
As for his clothes, he isn’t allowed to choose his own clothes. When his clothes are dirty, he should wash them by himself.

What will happen to the family life without the Internet for a month A month ago, one American family decided to find it out. They sent an invitation to a leading US television station, expecting that it would send a film group to record their daily life without the Internet for a month.
When the film group met the Smiths, they found that Mr Smith, Mrs Smith and their two kids were so crazy about the Internet that they hardly did things together. At mealtimes, no one sat at the dining table for their food. “Everyone just runs into the kitchen, takes their food and then goes back to their screen.” Mrs Smith explained, “If we don’t make a change, our family will become strangers to each other!”
Getting back to normal life without the Internet is not easy, especially when the Smiths lose themselves in it. They have to make many changes. For example, two kids have to go to the school library to borrow books for their scientific projects, and Mr and Mrs Smith need to go out shopping because they cannot buy things online. As the family have picked up the new lifestyle, they find that they can spend more time talking over meals, playing sports and doing all kinds of activities together.

“Let’s go to Sentosa this Saturday, Dad,” Sue said.
“What Again Don’t you ever get tired of going there ” asked Mr. Lee.
“Never! There are so many things to see there,” answered Sue.
On Saturday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, together with their two children, drove to Mount Faber. This time they took the cable car (缆车) to Sentosa from there instead of driving. The cable car ride was fantastic.
On arrival, they went around the island first by bus. After seeing the sea and the beautiful scenery (风景) on the island, their first stop was S.E.A.Aquarium. It was much bigger than Underwater World at the other end of Sentosa. The beautiful sea creatures (生物) of different colors and sizes were fascinating to look at.
Then Mr. and Mrs. Lee had a rest and Sue and Shawn went to the Tiger Sky Tower. They were excited to see Sentosa from a high point. They didn’t visit Images of Singapore again but went to Madame Tussauds instead. They took many interesting pictures there.
Sue and Shawn got together with their parents at the food center. They had a late but delicious lunch. After that, the family walked to Sentosa Nature Discovery. It was their very first visit there. For years I dreamed of owning a flower garden. I would spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.
But then we had children, five children! I was too busy taking care of them to grow a garden.
Money was always short. When my children were little, one of them would want something expensive, and I’d have to say, “Do you see a money tree outside Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, all the five children got through college and were living on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.
Three years ago, I heard a car come. I looked out of the window and there was a new tree planted right in my yard. Then I stopped cooking and put my glasses on. There was a money tree in my yard! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, all over that tree.
My garden is now very pretty, just the way I wanted. I think about what my children did for me, and then my eyes were full of tears (眼泪)—every time.

Children’s lives have changed a lot in the past few years. But do they have a happier childhood than we did
I usually look back on my own childhood. I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them. We used to play board games in the living room, spend days in the street with other children, race up and down on our bikes, or explore the nearby woods. My parents seldom appeared in these memories. They only appeared during meals.
These days, the nature of childhood has changed. Firstly, families are smaller. A family usually have one or two children. It is common for both parents to work outside. Children have to spend much of their time alone. Another change is that children spend most of their free time at home. Parents think it’s dangerous for their children to play outside by themselves.
Finally, the kinds of toys children have and the ways they play are completely puter and video games have taken the place of the interesting activities of my childhood. The funny thing is that so many ways of playing games are called “interactive (互动的)”. In fact, playing electronic games increases the feeling of loneliness.
Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I did I can’t give an answer exactly for sure, but perhaps every generation (一代人) feels the same.
There are a lot of changes in children’s lives. The writer’s family has 89 children. When they were young, they played board games, spent days in the streets with other children, raced up and down on their bikes or explored the nearby woods. And their parents 90 spent time with them—they only appeared during meals. Now families are 91 , and both parents always work outside. Children always spend time playing computer and video games at home because their parents think playing outside is too 92 for their children. Do children have a less relaxing childhood today There isn’t an exact answer to it, but maybe every generation 93 the same.
One day we invited some friends to dinner. When it was about six o’clock, my wife found that we had little bread.
So she asked our five-year-old daughter, Kathy, to buy some. “Here’s a dollar,” my wife said, “get two loaves (条) of bread, if they have it. If they don’t have it, get anything. But hurry!” Kathy hurried off, and we waited and waited. By a quarter past six, all the friends had arrived. But Kathy had not returned. Finally we saw her dancing around the corner with a bright new hula hoop (呼啦圈) whirling (旋转) round her middle. “Kathy!” her mother cried. “Where did you get that hula hoop, and where is the bread ” “Well, when I got to the shop, they had sold all their bread,” answered Kathy. “And you said ‘If they don’t have that, get anything!’”

95.Did Kathy go to the shop in a hurry
96.What did Kathy buy at last

Hello, I am Kevin. Today I want to share my experience at home alone. Four years ago, when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10-month-old sister home alone.
Since my sister was still asleep in her room, I had no one to play with myself. So I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Then I turned on the TV and there was nothing on it, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelf. I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper
Well, of course it went on fire, and it was getting bigger and bigger, but I couldn’t blow it out. I was very frightened. I threw it on the floor, and then I got my dad’s shoes and stamped it out (扑灭).
But there was a huge hole left on the floor. When my mum came home later she smelt the smoke immediately. Luckily, she dropped the shopping bag over the hole.
