Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become experts. Many think the training is helpful to success.Competitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special chances.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills.Once a formal athlete stated,“I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren't just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行为准则).” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork.People will have to use teamwork for the rest of their lives, and sports can help them improve that skill.Taking part in sports can help people behave actively in life in the long run.
Sports are also good for kids because they provide health benefits. It is healthier for a kid to play a sport competitively than to waste time playing video games all day. What's more,a research group of University of California said,“96 percent of the participants said they enjoy their sports. They're all loving life.” That is to say, playing highly competitive sports are more possible to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming.However,the time spent does not rob(掠夺) kids of their childhood, but offers special chances.Athletes can get success to live their dream lives by playing sports.
In a word, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome (有益身心的) benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school.Small for my age,and more of a bookworm than a sports lover,I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day,which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event,I got my first taste of sporting victory.Credit goes to the example of my first coach,my father. He lifted weights every morning at home.He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months,we spent hours playing catch.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, all of our students were assigned to either the Red or the White team.Throughout the year,we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points.I eventually became the president of the Committee of Games.I also played on the hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did.During the break time, these regularly featured articles on physical exercise in magazines were also quite popular for us teens.Somehow,my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force(RCAF) exercises every day,the practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So,though it shocks some of our friends, the early foundation (基础) evolved in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation.I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I'm concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
5.What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in paragraph 1

The boy looked sad and out of place.James hesitated for a moment before deciding to approach him.“Hi,I'm James,” he said softly. The boy looked up,surprised, and managed a weak smile.“Hi,I'm Liam,” he replied.James sat down beside Liam and started talking to him.To James' delight,Liam seemed to brighten up as they chatted about books and favorite subjects.
In the following days,James and Liam became fast friends.Liam had just moved to town and was struggling to fit in,but James made sure he felt welcomed. However, their friendship faced a challenge when a group of boys in the class, known for being bullies, started mocking Liam for his accent and his habit of drawing during class breaks.
One afternoon,as James walked into the schoolyard,he saw the bullies surrounding Liam, laughing at his sketchbook.James felt anger boiling inside him.But he also felt nervous—standing up to the bullies would mean putting himself in the spotlight, something he had always avoided.

James clenched his fists and took a deep breath before stepping forward.“Leave him alone!” he shouted, his voice trembling but firm. The bullies turned, surprised.“What's it to you?” one sneered, holding Liam's sketchbook.James walked up and took it back.“It's his,not yours. And his drawings are amazing!” he said, glaring at them. The bullies exchanged looks, muttered something, and left.James handed the sketchbook to Liam, his heart still racing.
Liam looked at James gratefully, his face lighting up with a smile.“Thanks,James,” he said softly.James opened the sketchbook and saw a drawing of the big oak tree, with himself reading under it.“This is amazing!” James exclaimed.“I drew it for you,” Liam said shyly.James felt warmth in his chest. From that day, their friendship grew stronger, and James realized standing up for others didn't make him weaker—it made him braver.
