Shen Kuo was a scientist of the Northern Song Dynasty. He was an all-round scholar of astronomy, literature, physics, chemistry, calendars, geology, meteorology and medical science. He was also an outstanding engineer, an excellent military strategist and a smart diplomat. He even made milestone contributions to art and literature. Shen Kuo’s reputation has been mostly in the field of scientific writing: He was the first to illustrate and build orographic (山形的) maps, the first to illustrate accurately the source of fossils and the marine origin of some rocks.
In 1040, when Shen Kuo was only nine years old, he was fond of reading. His mother, a learned person, had a great impact on the boy. When he was eleven, he started receiving a formal education, and in 1043 he followed his father to a new city, observing many towns on the way. Shen Kuo then began to study calligraphy. As a child, his health was poor, and he suffered eyestrain when he was eighteen years old because of reading too often at night.
While in his thirties, Shen Kuo frequently dreamed of a place. In the dream, he climbed a hill, the summit of which was covered with brightly colored flowers and trees. Clear waters flowed at the base of the hill, banked on either side by dense (茂密的) woods. Later on, when traveling around, he was shocked to find a piece of land that was just the place in his dream.
There he settled and wrote of the discoveries he had made in his lifetime. This extraordinary story is the origin of Shen’s Mengxi Bitan. Shen Kuo was hundreds of years ahead of the western scientists in the fields of astronomy, geography, mathematics and the calendar. He was the first to discover that the compass does not point directly north, but to the magnetic north pole. Mengxi Bitan was a milestone in the history of Chinese science. Today, this amazing scientific work has been translated into a number of different languages, including English, French, German and Japanese.

A. Ambitious. B. Knowledgeable. C. Attractive. D. Adaptable.

In recent years, there has been a greater influx of houses that make use of more sustainable methods. The primary idea behind sustainable homes is to minimize the general impact that their construction and running have on the environment as a whole. There are many different ways in which this can be achieved.
For instance, the materials that are used are often taken from places that are being rapidly depleted (耗尽的) and the cost of getting those materials to the construction site requires a significant amount of fuel. The shipping and transportation of these kinds of materials are especially intensive on the environment. Not to mention the use of wood in a lot of construction, which leads to large-scale deforestation. Sustainable architecture usually attempts to minimize those aspects.
However, construction is only the beginning of the life of a building. A structure typically stands, at the very least, a number of decades, if not even longer. This led to the general features of sustainable homes being directed towards an attempt at maintaining an environmental kind of living. This usually means the use of renewable energy generation, thus reducing emissions.
The reduction in the amount of water that is used as well as the conservation of water becomes another integral characteristic of sustainable homes, such as through the use of greywater recycling for use in toilets or the watering of gardens. There are also elements of passive design. Sustainable homes are usually designed to wakeful advantage of natural light and other elements. On top of this, they often aim towards high-quality, durable materials and designs that will not need to be replaced and be expensively repaired or reconstructed through environmentally damaging methods.
There are many different ways in which sustainable homes can be built and sustained, but when it comes to the actual design of structures, there is no real “sustainable aesthetic (美感)”. Many of these structures are more oden in their presentation, but this is not a necessity. So, while other architectural styles are generally noted for specific aesthetics, this is not the case with sustainable architecture. The emphasis is instead on the methods that can be used to make these structures more environmentally friendly.
8. According to the passage, the use of wood in construction can ____.
A. cause a serious reduction of forests. B. bring down the cost of construction.
C. lower the emission of greenhouse gases. D. affect the solidness of the building.
9. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A Lack of electricity. B. The construction of the buildings.
C. Environmental damage. D. The duration of the buildings.
10. Which of the following is in line with the principle of sustainable homes?
A. Making the best of natural elements in their design.
B. Pursuing a specific beauty while designing the structure.
C. Using expensive building materials to improve the quality.
D. Transporting raw materials from dismal locations.
11. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Environmental protection — Starting from ourselves
B. Sustainable homes — The path to a greener future
C. Sustainable homes — Standing the test of time
D. Environmental protection — A long way to go
D
“Don’t get dirty! ”was once a constant family complaint, as parents angrily watched their children spoil their best clothes. It was unavoidable that children’s whites would turn brown before the day was over.
Today, many parents may secretly wish their children had the chance to pick up a bit of grime (污垢). With the rise of urbanism, and the allure of video games and social media, contact with nature is much rarer than in the past. For many, there is simply no opportunity to get muddy. According to recent research, the dirt outside is teaming with friendly microorganisms that can train the immune system and build resilience to a range of illnesses, including allergies, asthma and even depression and anxiety.
These findings show that outdoor exercise is not only beneficial because of the chance to roam free — but that certain natural materials, such as soil and mud, also contain surprisingly powerful microorganisms whose positive impact on children’s health we are only beginning to fully understand. Outdoor play can also offer valuable learning experiences. For example, the act of molding and kneading materials like mud or sand can help children develop the way their senses and movement interact.
Such activities — away from the house or classroom — may also help children to find ways to cope with emotions that may be hard to explore in other environments. So-called “sand tray therapy”, which involves using sand and miniature figurines to express one’s thoughts and feelings, is an accepted form of counselling for children who are struggling to their emotional state.
Remarkably, people who spent the majority of their childhood in a rural setting tend to show a better response to stressful events like public speaking compared with those who had grown up in cities. “The people who grew up in cities are kind of ‘walking time bombs’ when facing the stress we meet today. However, people since childhood who spent lots of time in nature are generally more resilient and positive.” says Christopher Lowry, a professor of integrative physiology.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By giving a definition. B. By making a contrast.
C. By providing statistics. D. By questioning the logic.
13. What is NOT the benefit of outdoor exercise?
A. Analyzing more microorganisms. B. Strengthening the immune system.
C. Releasing emotions in proper ways. D. Having valuable learning experiences.
14. Why are some people “walking time bombs”?
A. Because they lack a strong sense of time. B. Because they always stay positive and energetic.
C. Because they pose threats to the public. D. Because they are affected by pressure.
15. In which column of a website can you find the text?
A. Culture. B. Finance. C. Health. D. Technology.

Physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman developed a clever learning method known as the Feynman Technique (费曼学习法). It involves explaining what you’re learning to others. By teaching what you’ve learned from memory, you engage in active recall.___16___It also ensures that you understand the topic, because you can only explain an idea if you truly understand it. The technique is made up of four repeatable steps.
To begin, choose a concept or topic you wish to fully understand.___17___The more interested you are, the faster you’ll grasp it. Moreover, a personally interesting topic will keep you motivated and engaged.
___18___Write notes and explain it in a way that makes sense to a five-year-old. If you’d rather avoid actually teaching someone, you can just teach it to an imaginary audience. But it works much better if you use a real person. They’ll be able to let you know when something isn’t clear.
While teaching you may discover gaps in your understanding.___19___Review your notes, reread books, or seek external help to ensure you have a complete understanding of the context before moving forward.
Now that you fully grasp the concept, test your understanding by trying to teach it to another person. This will help you identify any remaining areas of uncertainty you need to revisit.
The Feynman Technique is a great way for kids and grown-ups to learn. It is mentally demanding. You need to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else. ___20___
A. This helps the information stick in your mind better.
B. Teach it to a five-year-old, who would give you direct feedback.
C. Once you have chosen a topic, you can teach it to someone else.

Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.”
Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith.
Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons.
