Recently, the news that a school in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, serves pre made meals to its students has sparked heated discussions across the country. People doubt if pre made meals, despite being convenient, are healthy and nutritious enough for growing teenagers.
Pre made meals refer to half finished or finished dishes that are already cooked or prepared, according to the China Cuisine Association. There are several types of pre made foods, including ready to eat food, such as canned food or cooked food in packages, and ready to heat or ready to cook food, which requires heating or cooking before being served.
Many people tend to think that ready to heat and ready to cook foods are less nutritious because they usually need to be kept in refrigerators. “Actually freezing does not cause nutrient loss,” Liu Junya, a 33 year old dietitian in Beijing, said. “Nutrient loss typically occurs during the heating or frying process.”
Vitamins from the B group and vitamin C found in meat and vegetables are heat sensitive and can be lost during the process. By being heated or cooked twice or more, “pre made foods can be less nutritious than freshly prepared and cooked foods,” Liu said.
Meanwhile, “many pre made food companies prioritize taste over nutrition,” said Liu. This leads to higher levels of salt and sugar in the food, which may lead to health problems, such as high blood pressure in the long term.
Additives(添加剂) are also a major concern related to pre made food. In China, there are strict standards for food additives. Currently, China's food industry has well developed techniques to preserve pre made food without the excessive use of additives. Some food can be sterilized(消毒) and then sealed after cooking, followed by low temperature storage, allowing for a longer shelf life. However, it's essential that customers buy pre made meals from qualified food companies or supermarkets.
It is hoped that regulations on pre made meals can be strengthened to better ensure nutrition and hygiene(卫生). This way, “pre made meals will be more accepted by the public,” Liu said.
( ) 4. What can we learn about pre made meals from the article
A. They are rich in various vitamins.
B. They are popular among youngsters.
C. They taste better than home made food.
D. They are already partially or fully cooked.
( ) 5. According to Liu Junya, when does nutrient loss typically occur in pre made foods
A. During cooking. B. During freezing.
C. During packaging. D. During sales.
( ) 6. What is one of the key recommendations for consumers regarding pre made meals
A. Keep pre made meals frozen. B. Buy from reliable sources.
C. Follow the cooking instructions. D. Pay attention to the additives used.
( ) 7. What does Liu Junya think of pre made meals
A. They are a safe choice for all.
B. They bring more convenience to daily life.
C. They can be acceptable if properly regulated.
D. They should be cut out for long term health.
It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socio economic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Head Start” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into pre school institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Head Start” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment.
To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child's first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socio economic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance and useful skills on child development.
At three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio economic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio economic backgrounds or family structures. The one factor that was found to affect the child's development was the poor quality of parent child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.
The “Missouri” program compares quite distinctly with the “Head Start” program. Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.
( ) 8. What caused the failure of the “Head Start” program
A. The large number of poor families. B. The disapproval from children.
C. The late start of the program. D. The long period of time.
( ) 9. What do we know about the “Missouri” program
A. It focused on the children's first school teachers.
B. It helped the children return to the same home.
C. It made the children improved in many aspects.
D. It gave the parents advice on their development.
( )10. According to the passage, what is likely to influence children's performance
A. The number of family members. B. The parent child communication.
C. The intelligence of their parents. D. The teacher student relationship.
( )11. How does the author develop the passage
A. By listing figures. B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples. D. By drawing conclusions.
The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural phenomenon that has fascinated humans for centuries. These colorful displays in the night sky are primarily visible in polar regions, particularly in countries like Norway, Canada, and Iceland. The lights are caused by solar particles(粒子) interacting with the Earth's magnetic(磁的) field and atmosphere. When charged particles from the sun crash with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, they release energy in the form of light. This process is known as ionization.
The colors of the Aurora Borealis can vary greatly. Green is the most common color, produced when solar particles interact with O2 at lower altitudes(海拔). Red auroras are rarer and occur when solar particles interact with O2 at much higher altitudes. Blue and purple auroras are even rarer and are caused by interactions with N2.
Scientists have been studying the Aurora Borealis for many years to understand its causes and effects. One interesting finding is that the auroras can affect radio communications and power supply. During strong solar storms, the increased activity of solar particles can cause disruptions in these systems. This is because the electromagnetic fields created by the auroras can disturb the signals used by these technologies.
Despite the potential for disturbance, the beauty of the Aurora Borealis continues to attract tourists from around the world. Many people travel to remote locations in polar regions to witness this natural wonder. Some companies even offer special tours and packages for aurora viewing. These tours often include activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling. The experience of seeing the Northern Lights is often described as magical and unforgettable.
However, predicting the exact timing and location of the Aurora Borealis remains a challenge. Scientists use data from satellites and ground based observatories to monitor solar activity and make predictions. But the auroras are still somewhat unpredictable, which adds to their mystery and allure.
( )12. What causes the different colors of the Aurora Borealis
A. The strength of solar storms.
B. The different speeds of solar particles.
C. The substances that react and their locations.
D. The changes in the Earth's magnetic field strength.
( )13. What can be inferred about the Aurora Borealis
A. It promotes the development of modern technology.
B. It brings challenges to the technological systems.
C. It has a significant impact on climate change.
D. It improves the accuracy of satellite signals.
( )14. What does the underlined word “allure” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Threat. B. Frequency. C. Complexity. D. Attraction.
( )15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Impact of the Northern Lights
B. The Science and Wonder of the Northern Lights
C. The Reasons for People's Passion for the Aurora Borealis
D. The Challenges and Methods to Predict the Aurora Borealis

It was a sunny day when Aiden came to me excitedly and asked if I would go on a camping trip to the mountains with him. In my mind, I immediately thought of a nice log cabin, a warm fireplace with burning flames, cups of hot cocoa giving out steam, and comfortable beds. Little did I know that my pleasant imagination was going to be broken.
When Aiden and his elder brother, Lebron, showed up in a truck full of all kinds of camping things—big tents, tightly rolled sleeping bags, strong canteens, flashlights and compasses(指南针), I was really surprised. Of course, I had packed a backpack as I was told, but this was obviously not the easy camping I had expected. It looked more like a tough survival trip!
Lebron, who was always efficient, was very serious and hurried us into the truck so that we could leave the noisy city. As we got closer to the mountains, I couldn't help noticing that they looked much bigger and scarier than I imagined. The trees were very tall and the whole environment made me a little afraid.
At the beginning of the trail, Lebron skilfully tied a sleeping bag to my pack and gave Aiden and me a serious talk about how to behave when hiking to camp. The first part of the path was like a road in the woods, which made the climbing seem easy at first. But soon, it became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus all my attention on it and stop talking. As we climbed higher, rising above the treeline, I saw the path wind its way up the mountain.
Just as we were making good progress, disaster approached. Out of nowhere, a thick fog rolled in, quickly enveloping us. Visibility dropped to almost zero, and I could hardly see my own feet.
