专题11 任务型阅读

Young children don’t have the skills or knowledge to keep safe (安全的) in heavy traffic. The following advice will be helpful in keeping your children safe in heavy traffic.
Children learn about road safety by watching others when they are young. Make sure that you always set good examples. Your children will follow you and think it’s OK to do like you. Teach your children to pay attention to the traffic lights when you cross the road together with them. This helps them understand when it’s safe to cross.
When your children are a little older, you can start to tell them the importance of traffic knowledge. Let them start to understand the reasons why they need to be so careful.
Ask your children to play in a safe place. Never let them ride bikes on the road alone at rush hours (交通高峰期), because it’s dangerous. The most important thing you can do to keep your children from getting hurt is to ask them to follow traffic rules. In this way, they’ll be careful enough to keep themselves away from danger.

If you have a pet, you know how much fun it can be: watching little fish swim in a tank, or seeing a dog catch a ball in its mouth. Kids who like outdoor activities can tell you how exciting it is to see their favorite birds. Animals can be of great fun, but it’s important to know how to avoid (避免) danger when you’re with them.
In the countryside
The rule in the countryside is simple: don’t touch or go near an animal. Although some of these animals may look cool or even cute, leave them alone.
Don’t ever try to feed a wild animal. It’s OK to feed birds, but you shouldn’t feed other animals even if they look very hungry. When it comes to these animals, it’s better to check them out at the zoo, on the Internet, on TV nature shows, or in books.
Playing safely with pets
Pets can’t tell you if they’re upset or scared, so they show you. They might do this by biting or scratching (抓). To avoid bites and scratches, you should do as follows:
Never touch a pet when it’s eating or sleeping.
Never try to get near a pet with its babies. Animal mothers are very protective and will bite to keep you away.
When pulling a lizard (蜥蜴) or a snake from the tank, do it slowly and carefully. Then wash your hands right away because such animals can carry bacteria (细菌) on their skin.

Computers can injure (伤害) you. Most other injuries happen suddenly. For example, if you fall off a bike and break your arms, it happens very quickly. But computer injuries happen slowly.
You probably know how to ride a bike safely. Now let’s learn how to use a computer safely.
Your eyes
Too much light can injure your eyes, so never sit too close to a computer screen. Your eyes should be at least 50 centimeters from the screen. Remember to look away from it sometimes. This gives your eyes a rest.
When you use a computer, the window should be on your left or your right. If it is behind you, the light will reflect on the screen. If the window is in front of you, the sun and the screen will both shine into your eyes.
Your hands and wrists (手腕)
Hand and wrist injuries can happen because the hands and wrists are moved in the same way hundreds of times. If you use a keyboard for a long time, follow these three rules:
Rest your wrists on something.
Keep your elbows (肘) at the same height as the keyboard.
Stop sometimes and exercise your hands, wrists in a different way.
Your back
Some people sit for many hours in front of a computer. If you sit in the wrong way, you can injure your back or your neck. So you should sit with your back straight. The top part of the screen should be in front of your eyes. Your forearms, wrists, hands and the upper part of your legs should all be parallel (平行的) to the floor. If you are sitting for a long time, get up every thirty minutes and exercise your arms, legs and neck.
Enjoy your computer, but use it safely.

Imagine you are walking through deep snow. As you walk, you leave marks where you’ve been. That’s what happens when we use technology, such as computers, mobile phones and tablets. We leave our digital footprint (数字足迹) and it will never disappear.
Here are reasons why your digital footprint is important to you.
It may influence how others see you.
Even if you think you have nothing to hide, but if people get information about you, they might judge (评判) you by the information you have left online. For example, you tell a bad joke online. Years later, when the university you are applying (申请) to sees it, they might not think it’s funny. They may decide you are not the “right” kind of person for them. Future teachers could also search for your online history.
It may leak your personal information.
Not everything can be shared with everyone. For example, you might share your school reports with your parents, but don’t want your e-friends to know. If you share them on the Internet, everyone will know. Once posted, it’s hard to cut out. So, always share less personal information online to stay safe.
You may lose your money because of it.
There are many people looking at information about you, and some of them want to steal from you. So if you write bank information or card numbers in e-mails or text messages, you may lose your money.
Remember: No one can go online without leaving his digital footprint-but with care, you can control (控制) it. Think before you post, and ask yourself, “Would I want everyone to see this ”
45.When do people leave digital footprints
46.What may happen if a university sees your bad joke online
47.What should you do to protect your personal information
48.Why should you avoid sending bank information through e-mails
49.Are you afraid to go online after knowing about digital footprint Why or why not

What should you do when the flood comes Please read carefully the following information.
①Stay away from rivers and bridges, because floods can cause rivers to move quickly and bridges to fall down. ②Listen to emergency broadcasts (紧急广播) for further information. If it asks you to move somewhere else, do so. ③If you are staying inside a car, get out when the water begins to flood the car itself. Then move to the top of it. ④If you have to stay in a building during a flood, move to the highest floor. Once there, ask for help and let others know where you are (such as drawing SOS on the roof). ⑤Don’t touch power lines (电线), because they are broken during strong storms and floods. In fact, it’s impossible to have no traffic accidents. So what can we do to have fewer accidents and keep ourselves out of danger First, we should be careful when we drive or ride a bike. Following the traffic rules is the most important. Second, we should be sure to use safety equipment (安全设备), like child safety seats. In the event of an accident, safety equipment can save lives. Many earthquakes happen every year. Some of these earthquakes are very strong. When they happen in cities, they can be very serious. Many people will be hurt or die in the earthquakes. Knowing some ways to protect yourself will help to keep you safe in the earthquakes.
If you are indoors when the earthquake happens, the safest place is under a strong table or desk. Sitting on the floor in a doorway or close to a wall is safer than standing in the middle of a room. Remember to protect your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, tall furniture and pictures or anything that may fall on you. Do not try to run out of the building.
If you are out of doors, move to clear areas. Get away from buildings and trees. Be very careful of fallen power lines.

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house How will you escape Do you know how to save yourself Please read the following passage.
Escaping from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
①The second-floor window is usually not very high from the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leak (渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto hard ground might end in injury. Bushes (灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall (缓冲).

Pictures are falling off the wall. Lights are waving. The bed is shaking. Everything is moving. What’s going on It’s an earthquake.
Earthquakes are horrible disasters (灾难) and some of them are destructive (毁灭性的). The top layer of the Earth is made up of huge pieces of rock. They move past each other all the time along fault lines (裂纹线). But sometimes two pieces get stuck together. When they finally move away from each other, they move suddenly. And this makes the land above them shake. This is the most common cause of earthquakes.
During a small earthquake, you will feel a little shaking. But during a strong one, you will be thrown about. A strong earthquake is very horrible. Cracks will appear on the ground and windows and doors will break. Buildings will even fall down. So watch out! If an earthquake happens at sea, it can make big waves called “tsunamis” (海啸). When these waves reach land, they can destroy villages.
Earthquakes are measured (测量) on a scale (等级) of 0—9. It is called the Richter scale. A size 9 earthquake is the strongest and most dangerous. Since 1900, more than two million people have died in earthquakes. In 1976, a size 7.8 earthquake hit Tangshan, China. It killed more than 240,000 people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, so it is important for us to know what to do when an earthquake hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in an earthquake.

Always play in a safe place. A park is a safe place because there are no cars or trucks. But do not talk to strangers. Never go with a stranger into a car.
Before crossing the road, stop and look both sides of the road. Look left, look right and look left again.
Keep away from houses or buildings that are being built or knocked down. Something might fall on your head, or you might cut yourself on broken glass.
Medicines or pills can be dangerous. Never swallow (吞下) any pills or medicines you find in the cupboard.
