Seeing the Asian Games on television and being a spectator(观众) in the arena are different experiences, and, as more than two dozen Hong Kong university students discovered, one way to see the action up close is through volunteering.
16 students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and 11 more from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) were chosen to work at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Tennis Centre.
Before starting their Games duties, the students went through rigorous(严格的) preparations for their positions, including taking a 12-hour online video course, two tests of 190 questions, and two days of training in Hangzhou ahead of the opening ceremony.
“It’s difficult to explain to them the rules of tennis,”HKUST student Candy Liu Yu-ting, 21, said. “Spectators wouldn’t understand why we only let them in during odd-numbered(奇数) games and would become angry. We had to be patient and explain to them.”
Siu, who was assigned to put memorial stamps on tickets, said the task was “quite popular
among the spectators”. “Keeping a good order in the queues could be difficult at times, but I am happy to see how happy the spectators looked once they finished the collection.”

For Hua, equestrian is a journey about growth and exploration, which is not about money, fame, but about love. “You are not the ruler of horses. You need to grow with them,” said Hua Tian.
Learning to work with the horse has made him more patient. When training with his horses, he is always full of patience and never gets angry.

Pan Tingting
Pan Tingting, a guide for the Opening Ceremony of the Asian Games, becomes well-known for her bright smile.
After volunteering for this task, she soon realizes that it is difficult for her to keep a smiling face because of the heavy board, especially during the Opening Ceremony. So she makes up her mind to change herself in order to do the task.
She works harder to make herself more suitable for the job. She eats less to be slimmer and exercises more to be stronger during the training. After several months of training, Pan Tingting succeeds in losing more than five kilograms of weight and is strong enough to hold the board for a long time. She once again stands at the ceremony with a brighter and more confident smile.
