Mark Twain, as we all know, was a world-famous writer. He was best known for having created the characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. But in his lifetime, he was also famous as a public speaker.
In l866, Mark Twain was an unknown reporter. He wrote travel articles for newspapers and had not published any major work. Later that year, he travelled to Hawaii. While on the island, he wrote about his adventures for newspapers in California. His writings drew public interest. After getting back, he was invited to give a speech about his experiences in Hawaii. His sudden popularity shocked him, and he wrote about his first speech in his book Roughing It: “I felt so frightened...I pretended (假装) to be ill.” However, that first speech was very successful.
Hundreds of public speeches across California then followed. They all focused on his adventures in Hawaii. Twain did not read from his writings when he gave a speech. He always had his audience in mind and carefully prepared. Although he was not a professional speaker, he tried to make his audience happy. He talked about the customs and habits in a humorous way. As his curtain fell, he jokingly apologized for having so many people spend time listening to him. “But I need the money!” he would say. People loved his humour. No matter where he went, he could fill the hall.
After his l866 speech tour, Twain published The Innocents Abroad, a book about his travels in Europe. Slowly, his fame grew across the United States.
By l872, Twain had become tired of doing lecture tours. He hoped that he would soon be able to retire from having to give these speeches. However, his public appearances greatly helped his book sales, so he returned to the stage again and again. He didn’t stop giving speeches until the late l890s.

Street art can be found on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and even rubbish bins from Tokyo to Paris to New York City. This special kind of art can take the form of paintings, sculptures, cloth and so on. Street art has become part of the culture which can be seen around the world. Now, even art museums are collecting the work of street artists.
People have different thoughts about street art. Some think street art is bad, but others see this art
as a rich form of non-traditional culture expression. Street art began in New York City in the 1960s. Young adults would use paint in special cans to spray (喷射) their “ tag” on walls and train cars around the city. This tag was a name they created to identify themselves and their art work. This colorful style of drawing and writing became known as graffiti (涂鸦). Graffiti art showed that young people wanted to fight against the rules. They travelled around cities to make paintings that everyone could see.
Street artists do their work for some reasons. A number of them choose street art because it is closer to the everyday life. What they enjoy most is the freedom of expressing themselves which street art allows. One well-known street artist is Swoon. She cuts out paper images of people and puts them on walls. Swoon didn't start her career as a street artist. She studied art, but, as time went on, she got bored with the works she saw in museums. Then she fell in love with graffiti. The people in New York enjoy Swoon's strong and interesting style. Some museums have already bought some of her works.
Nowadays street art has become part of a world-wide culture. It is supported by websites, artist groups, books and magazines.
What’s the main idea of the first paragraph
Street art has a long history. B. Street art is a new form of culture.

Chinese people started to build gardens more than 2,000 years ago. Chinese gardens are a special form of traditional Chinese culture and art.
At the entrance to a Chinese garden, there is usually a huge stone or wall to catch your eyes. This is to give you a pressed-in feeling in order to later produce unexpected joy when you turn around the hall to see the amazing rock formations ( 假山) and a big lake. The best example is the Summer Palace.
Rock formations play an important role in the design of a Chinese-style garden. Without them, a garden could not be considered a Chinese-style garden. They are as important to a Chinese-style garden as sculptures are to a European-style garden. Ge Garden in Yangzhou is famous for its Four Seasons Rockeries.
Gardens in the south are mostly small in size. Chinese garden designers have used the method of “borrowing scenery with a mirror” to create a sense of space. A mirror is hung opposite a window to take in the outside scenery. A fine example of this is Pian Shi Shan Fang, a rockery in He Garden,Yangzhou. A big mirror is built into the wall of its west corridor(走廊). The whole garden will be seen in the mirror wherever the visitors are. A pool or a lake in a garden also serves this purpose. A pool runs from south to north through the garden of Pian Shi Shan Fang. East of the rockery, a man-made moon is reflected(倒映)in the pool.
Whatever methods used, every effort is made to achieve the purpose of giving visitors a sense of
space in the garden.

It's widely thought that Van Gogh (1853-1890) sold only one painting during his lifetime. In fact, there are still many different ideas about it.
Most people think that The Red Vineyard is the only painting sold during his lifetime.1 . It's recorded that Van Gogh started painting at 27, and died at 37. His famous paintings were created after he went to France in 1888, only two years before he died. So it would be clear that he did not sell many.
2. The leading Van Gogh scholar, Marc, is one of them. Though the story that Van Gogh sold just one painting still goes around, he insists that he sold at least two.
Also, according to the Van Gogh Museum website,Van actually sold many paintings for a living during his lifetime. His first money came from his uncle. 3. And he himself would often trade his paintings for food or art tools.
Van Gogh died in July of 1890. His brother saved lots of paintings by Van Gogh. Sadly, he himself died just six months later. He left a large collection of art to his wife, who sold some of Van Gogh's works and lent as many as she could to exhibitions. 4.
Van Gogh was considered to be a shining star in the sky of art and we would always remember him for those wonderful paintings.

书面表达范文
Dear Headmaster,
We have had a discussion about whether to play music during the break or not. Students in my
class have different ideas towards this.
Most of us agree that the music should be played during the breaks. They hold the view that
listening to music can make them feel happy after a busy lesson. Besides, music has the power to
change our moods and make us energetic. As a result, it can be of great help to improving the study
efficiency, which would make it easier for us to get high marks in our exams.
On the other hand, some students hold the totally different ideas. They doubt whether they can
get expected results by listening to music, as the break is too short. Some students may still lost
themselves in music when the bells ring, which has a bad effect on students.
Every coin has two sides. From my point of view, I insist that what we need during breaks is
peace, not the short music pieces. As the music sometimes would disturb our continuous thoughts
about problems from the class and the teachers. So I would rather stay in a quiet environment to
have a rest than enjoy the short pieces of music.
Yours sincerely,
John
