For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death’s door. Every year sees more news of closing. But why is the situation so terrible for newspapers
Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s. Their most successful period is in the early 20th century.
With the appearance of radios and TVs, however, the circulation (发行量) of newspapers began to fall. 3By the mid-20th century, radios and TVs had become so popular that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news. That was especially true for breaking news.
Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer (受损害). After work, more and more people turned on TV instead of opening a newspaper. That was because TVs could provide news happening a short time ago. It’s true that newspapers couldn’t compete with TV on speed, but they could provide in-depth (深入详尽的) reports that TV news could not.
But newspapers suffered another heavier blow (打击) in the 1990s. With the appearance of the Internet, tons of information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could read news on the Internet. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper.
So what will happen in the future Will newspapers die Maybe not. Many newspapers are now making changes. Some are going digital (数字的). Some are going farther and taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are still an important source (来源) of in-depth news, analysis (分析) and opinions. 4If newspapers disappear completely, there will be nothing to take their place.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (灌溉渠) and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they ” I asked. “They are good men from our government.”
Shortly afterwards, I moved to the city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers no longer bad to go up and down the hill. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to plant fruit trees to increase the fruit production.
Seeing the big changes in my village, I’ve realized that although more and more people work hard to live in a big city, they should never forget their hometowns where they are from.

In the past, young married couples(夫妇) often had children right after getting married. They didn’t ask themselves if they had the wish to stay up at night with babies, to give up going out at night whenever they wanted to. Now many young couples feel that not having children will make them have a different life style. They prefer to have a more comfortable one.
Michael Shandrik, 30, and his wife Pamela, 28, for example, have joined the growing number of young couples who don’t have and do not want children. Many of their close friends are childless and plan to keep that way. Michael says the decision not to have children developed over four years of marriage. He explains, “We never decided to become childless. It more or less became an understanding after we got married.” Pamela adds, “If I had married before 23, I probably would have children. But as the years went by, I got used to the idea of working and not having children. It’s too late to change now.”
For both of them, the wish for a free life-style played a big part in the decision. Michael, who wants to build a career in communications, makes the point. “We would buy the things we really want instead of going without things because of the children. If we had a child, we would have to start thinking about its education and health. We need the happiness of getting up and going somewhere whenever we want.”

I’m a 34-year-old man, married, lived in a nice house, and have a successful career. But my life was not always so great. I had a learning disability from an early age. I went to a special school where I got plenty of extra (额外的) help. Still, I suffered (遭受) the rest of my school days in public schools.

On September 1, 2021, schools all over China welcomed their students’ return. Yet this term was special. In the summer of 2021, the Chinese government introduced a series of measures known as “double reduction(双减)”, to reduce the burden(负担)and anxiety of students and parents.
Primary and junior high school students in Beijing have benefited from the new education policy, as they are allowed to stay at school to pursue(从事)other after-school activities.
At 5:40 pm, on the first day of the new term, many students walked out of the campus(校园)of a primary school in Chaoyang district. More parents were waiting outside the school to pick up their children instead of grandparents. Previously(先前), when schools closed at four pm, many parents were still at work. “It’s great that I can come to pick up my daughter,” said a mother of a second-grade student.
“We have a reading course after classes end at 4 pm,” said Zhang Ziqi excitedly, a second-grade student. “Then we do our homework at school. I don’t have to do my homework when I go back home.”
Lao Lan, a junior high school student, said she stayed at her school until 6:30 pm. “Our teachers have asked our opinions on what after-school activities we would like to attend, which I’m looking forward to do very much.”
Besides, primary and junior high schools in Guangzhou have been required to reduce the burden of students while improving the quality of education. At Xiaobei Road Primary School, students in the first and second grades are not given written homework. Other graders’ written homework is designed to be finished in less than an hour. Did you have an experience of going from one after-school class to another on weekends Chinese students used to be busier on weekends than weekdays because they had to take so many after-school classes. Many of them spent much time on these classes to learn exam skills.
But this year, Ma Xiaohua, a student from Grade 8 in Zhengzhou spent a winter holiday that was quite different. “I felt more relaxed this holiday, because the homework is clearly much less and more enjoyable,” said Ma. Things like doing some housework, making an English video to introduce a Chinese custom, and reading aloud Home Letters by Fu Lei were part of her winter holiday homework. Ma found herself doing more practice-based (基于实践的) learning instead of always having her nose in workbooks. Another big difference for her was that she didn’t have after-school classes anymore. “This gives me more time to play badminton and gradually get healthier,” she said.

In early days of history, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another build houses, and clear fields. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment.
But today in our cities and suburbs, friendly relationship between neighbors is not common. A family may not even know the other families that live next door to them. We live in an age of machines, and each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents’ time, women met while they hung out the washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed the lawns. Today, they cannot hear anything above the noise of their power lawn mowers. And women stay inside with their electrical dryers, which help dry their clothes. Children are inside watching their favorite TV shows. Is the idea of being a good neighbor old-fashioned
In 1965, a power cut hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left helpless. Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and the largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other people helped direct traffic. In elevators, people played word games and helped cheer each other up.
In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important.

Farmer Pak Sadiman has made it his task (任务) to do something about Central Java’s water shortage problem, little by little.
He has changed his dry village into a place rich in groundwater by planting trees on nearby land for the last 19 years, and he is encouraging others to join in, too.
Sadiman realized that the land was in need of some water when the Gendol River — once the source (来源) of water for villagers — was quickly drying up: Even rubber trees, the local people’s main source of income (收入), were so dry that they could no longer produce rubber latex (橡胶乳). It was then that Sadiman took action so that his children and grandchildren could make use of the planted trees.
“Banyan (榕树) trees, unlike rubber trees, can keep groundwater. The more banyan trees are planted, the more clean water villagers will get,” he thought. Although he went through a hard time, the farmer never became hopeless at achieving his goal — providing his village with a clean water source.
He’s planted at least 11,000 trees over the last 19 years, and his village seems to have escaped from the dry season. Villagers have joined in and worked alongside him to plant the trees. “Pak Sadiman is our hero.
