Although you can make choices and plans for life, no one can ever be prepared for the unexpected. When these unexpected situations add up, it’s easy to become quite worried and feel as if your life is out of control. Some of the steps below may be useful.
Stop and Take a Break It is important to take a break now and then. It is OK to take some time to yourself: think quietly, relax or do self-care.
Take Control of Things You Can Change Even though people may not have control of everything in their lives, they do still have control of some things. Work on changing those things, like going to the gym a bit more or eating fewer sweets. Maybe it is the smallest of things, but it can help in building a sense of control in your life.
Pick Up a Hobby Hobbies are a great way to take your mind off the things you can’t change. You can go for a walk. You can also write down some words. Hobbies, in a way, remind you that you do control your life since it’s up to you to choose how to spend your free time.
56. ( ) What will your life be like when these unexpected situations add up

Life is full of unexpected things. This is even true to a small pet dog. A dog called Romeo was pulled from the rubble ( 瓦砾) five days after an earthquake.
Years ago, a terrible earthquake happened in a country near Pacific Ocean. Romeo’s owners were on the second floor of their house at that time. They managed to get out. But Romeo was sleeping on the first floor and was trapped (困难) inside. After the earthquake, they tried their best to search for Romeo, but they failed. After a few hours, they had to leave the village for their own safety.
All hope of finding Romeo alive seemed to disappear. They thought it had died. Five days later, they returned to their village with a group of firemen. Almost as soon as they came into the village, Romeo heard their voices and began barking (吠叫).
The couple couldn’t believe their ears. The firemen began digging at once. It was lucky that the dog was not hurt.
After Romeo was saved, it drank its first drops of water after more than 130 hours. Then it looked better. When Romeo’s owners saw it, they couldn’t help crying. “We thought we had lost it forever!” said one of the Romeo’s owners. Then Romeo left happily with its owners.
The unexpected thing also cheered those firemen. “We believe there must be many more that are still alive. We’ll try our best to save them,” one fireman said.

One day in 1903, French scientist E' douard Be'ne'dictus stood on a ladder in his lab. As he reached up to get something on a high shelf, his arm brushed an empty glass bottle and it dropped to the floor.
Be'ne'dictus climbed down, expecting a mess, but he found a surprise. The glass hadn’t fragmented! It had broken into a spiderweb-like pattern, but it had held together. Be'ne'dictus wondered why.
Later he knew one of his students had used the bottle to hold liquid plastic during an experiment. Later the liquid plastic dried itself. The student thought the bottle had been washed, so he put it back on the shelf. Be'ne'dictus realized the coating of dried plastic had kept the broken glass from falling apart.
The same week, a Paris newspaper printed an article about car accidents. The car was a new and exciting invention then, and more and more people were driving on the roads. Unluckily, there were no traffic lights or stop signs yet. In accidents, people were often hurt by flying broken glass when car windows broke.
After reading the article, the image of the broken glass bottle suddenly appeared before Be'ne'dictus’s eyes. ▲ He jumped up and ran to his lab.
Be'ne'dictus spent the whole day experimenting. Over and over again, he coated glass with liquid plastic and broke it, trying to figure out the best way to make glass that wouldn’t fragment. Finally, Be'ne'dictus put the liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and made them stick together. When he hit it, the glass-and-plastic sandwich broke, but not into pieces.
Be'ne'dictus had done it! That’s how an unexpected meeting between an unwashed glass bottle and a careless scientist led to an invention that made us all safer.

An Unexpected DayAn Day
It was 8th August, a sunny day. I woke up early, planning to go biking with my friends. But f irst, I decided to check my bike. To my surprise, it had a f lat tire!
At f irst, I felt unlucky because it ruined my plans. I had to pump up the tire, but the pump was broken too. Frustrated, I called a friend for help.
Luckily, he arrived soon with his own pump and f ixed the tire quickly. We still had time for a short ride before lunch. We laughed and enjoyed the fresh air.
The day ended with a barbecue at a nearby park. Everyone had a great time, and I forgot all about the morning’s trouble.
Looking back, I realized it wasn’t so unlucky after all. I learned that plans can change, but good times with friends are always worth it. Plus, I got better at f ixing f lats!
