I used to live in an area where the public transportation(公共交通) was not very good. If I came back home after 7 pm, I would have to wait in line for about an hour before I was able to take public transport or taxis. Because the line would be so long, there were many special taxis that would come by and offer to take people home without waiting so long, but the price was so high that not everyone could afford it every day.
One day, I worked overtime. When my work was done, it was 9 pm. There was no public transport and I felt so tired that I wanted to return home quickly to have a good sleep. So I took one of this kind of taxis. When I arrived, the driver didn’t ask me to pay and he just did it as an act of kindness. He said that he didn’t ask those who took his taxi after 9 pm to pay. His father had done it before and he found it such a nice thing to do that he decided to continue it himself.
I felt so touched by his words. There were no words for me to express how thankful I was. He made me feel so good during the following days because of that free ride.
I decided to do acts of kindness myself which might have the same influence on me as this one had.

Asking for directions is the first thing we need to do when we get to a different country. Knowing how to ask for help can make our life much easier! Here are some tips for you.

Build your vocabulary. You should know the basic (基本的) vocabulary that can be used when getting directions. Try to remember places like High Park, Queen Street, and words like traffic (交通) lights, bank, block (街区) and so on. You are on the street in New York and need to get to the nearest subway. Or you’re in Beijing and trying to find the bus to take you to the Great Wall.
These should all be easy. But if you aren’t sure where you are and can’t speak the foreign language, it can be an embarrassing(令人尴尬的)experience. There are some suggestions that can help you ask for directions.
Know where you are. If you do a bit of work before you leave for your trip, you can know where you are clearly.
Take some maps. If you worry about your pronunciation when asking for directions, it is useful to carry a map. That’s because a stranger can point you in the right direction. He can see where exactly you are going through the map.
Use body language. Often, travelers have to be like silent film actors when asking for directions. It sounds silly, but using your hands, fingers and facial expressions can make strangers understand where you want to go.
