Dear Lisa,
What exciting news! I am so excited that you will paya visit to my city next Friday. Now let me tell you how you can get to my house.
When you get off the bus at the bus station, go down Garden Street until you see a post office on your left. Then turn right to Center Street. On both sides of the road, there is a library and a garden. Then walk along the street and soon you will see a hotel and a bank on your right. When you pass a school on your left, turn left. Then walk on till you reach the end of the street, and you will find my home. By the way, taking a taxi here is a good choice.
If you have trouble finding the way, it's important to ask people nearby for help or call me. I hope you'll have a good trip.
I'm looking forward to your coming.
Yours,

When someone asks you the way to a place, how will you give directions to him Of course you should give him the right route. Here are some ideas about describing the right route clearly.
Explain the route depending on where the person is coming from. Before you start giving directions, you need to ask the person where exactly he is coming from. This is the most important because your route description depends on the person’s starting point.
Give the simplest route. Giving directions to a person is a good thing, but you will confuse the person if you give a complex route. When you consider a simple route, you can choose the route where the person can stay on one road for a long time.
Share the safest route. If there are several available routes, give the safest one. Because someone is not familiar with the area, he won’t know the dangers he’ll be driving through. When you give directions to someone, you should consider keeping away from narrow roads or neighborhoods with a high crime rate.
Don’t suggest routes you haven’t taken. When a person asks you the way, you should tell the person the routes that you are familiar with. If you don’t, you may give wrong directions and the person may get lost again.
4. How many ideas are mentioned in the passage
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
5. Which idea does the writer think is the most important
A. Knowing a person’s starting point. B. Knowing a person’s destination (目的地).
C. Giving the simplest route. D. Being familiar with the area.
6. Why does the writer mention "narrow roads" in the fourth paragraph
A. Because the roads are not good for cars. B. Because the roads are not good for buses.
C. Because the roads are not safe routes. D. Because they’re in areas with a high crime rate.
7. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. How to ask for help politely. B. How to help a stranger kindly.
C. How to find a way if you get lost. D. How to describe right routes clearly.

What are the basic ingredients (要素) of good manners A strong sense of fairness is one of them.
A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a one-lane (单行小路), unpaved (未铺路的) mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of choking dust (呛人的尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest paved main road. Suddenly, the car ahead stopped at a wider place on the road.
My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and asked if anything was wrong. "No," said the other driver. "But you've endured my dust so far. I'll endure yours the rest of the way."
Another ingredient is empathy (同情心). It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book.
A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty. Then the waiter closed it again and turned back. He pretended (假装) to make a great effort to open the bottle without success. Finally he took it into the kitchen and returned very soon. He told the man that he managed to open it, but only with a tool.
Yet another ingredient is the ability to treat people alike (一视同仁). No matter who he is and what he does, everyone is worth respecting.
8. The driver in the car ahead stopped to ______.
A. repair the car B. have a rest
C. ask the way D. let the back car go
9. The underlined word "endured" probably means ______ in Chinese.
A. 原谅 B. 容忍 C. 抱怨 D. 谴责
10. The second story may happen ______.
A. in the kitchen at home B. on the main road
C. in the restaurant D. on the busy street
11. The best title of the passage is "______".
A. The Ability to Solve Problems B. The Ways to Help Others
C. The Good Manners to Treat Others D. The Empathy for Strangers

Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this. If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say "Give me that", but ask kindly as the following examples, "Do you have a pen I could borrow " "Is there any wine " or "Did you buy any bread "
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with "could" "may" or "might". It’s also possible to use "can" in some special situations. In the past, "can" was not used when asking for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use "Can you lend me... " or "Can I have... " In the USA, this is still considered to be wrong and "May I have... is preferred.
It’s common to use "Could you lend / hand / give... " "May / Can I borrow... " or "May I have... " Do not begin a sentence with "please", but you can add "please" at the end of the sentence to be polite.
12. What can Lucy say politely if she wants some coffee
A. Pass me some coffee. B. Is there any coffee

A. Can I use your dictionary B. Could you lend me your bike
